I pat the last of the rough wool blanket into place A quick glance around the small room finds all secure I walk to the window and look out to the sky Gray with clouds of winter
Missing
I turn from the window and look back to the empty room A book here, his coat there, a video game is paused My youngest son is in here somewhere Yet I look to the table where two empty chairs sit
Missing
Walking back in from the chill I close the door behind me, basking for a moment in the warmth My eyes catch the smiles of familiar faces in photos on the mantel I sigh and carry the food to a busy kitchen
Missing
Everywhere there is an empty chair Mothers, daughters, brothers and sons Pausing in thought and memory,
