As a Marine myself, who just happens to be retired, I find nothing unusual about a Marine in a kilt. I also remember being at Red Beach north of DaNang, Viet Nam in 1970 and listening to a Marine piper playing from somewhere across the camp about every evening. I never did find out who he was but when he would miss a night I would wonder if something had happened to him. He would play for half an hour or an hour. It was something that I came to look forward to hearing.
Yes, indeed! it is an awsome thing to hear the pipes, be it in the field or just behind the barraks. I have heard from many coming back from the deployment of a piper playing every night while they were there. They said it was awsome.
ps: there is also a all marine bagpipe band, the marines also have there own tartan pattern.
I promise to find it and post it for you Kathleen! I have been looking for kilts for a wedding and I came across a manufacturer who made a camoflage kilt. Give me some time and I'll find it. Annabelle

Marines rule! My brother is a marine. He doesn't play any instruments though. I wish I could have read the story. The link didn't work for me.

There's a dear little plant that grows in our Isle Twas St . Patrick himself, sure, that set it; And the sun of his labour with pleasure did smile, And with dew from his eye often wet it. It grows through the bog, through the brake, through the Mireland, and they call it the dear little shamrock of Ireland.

Detroit's bagpipe-playing, kilt-sporting Marine 1st Sgt. Dwayne Farr has become something of a minor celebrity these days.
Since news reports published around the world featured the leatherneck from the city's east side wearing a kilt and wailing the Marine Corps Hymn on his bagpipes for battle-weary troops in Fallujah, Iraq (news - web sites), the calls from the media and private citizens have not stopped.
He even has his own spokeswoman assigned to handle the inquiries.
Many of the callers want to honor Farr's wish for a desert-camouflage kilt to replace the red, blue and green plaid one he wore on the field.
Dear Lord, lest I continue in my complacent ways, help me to remember that someone died for me today. And if there be war, help me to remember to ask and to answer "am I worth dying for?" - Eleanor Roosevelt
The ultimate result of shielding men from the effects of folly is to fill the world with fools. -- Herbert Spencer, English Philosopher (1820-1903)

I own a sportkilt and it is a good product. Not a real kilt but great for kicking around, especially with the price. I'd like to get a real one in Clan Maclellan tartan soon for more formal occasions.
I have had a beyond all repair stoy of new age kilts...I ordered a kilt in July from a group called utilikitz in seattle, and first of all they say it takes like 6-8 weeks that I can understand but after a bunch of lost orders and phone tags I am not even sure I will get the actual kilt I ordered....I ordered black they said I ordered brown...right now i just want the kilt, but for my next investment I would like to know if anyone can recommend a more reputable supplier?
I don't mean to diss the company or to flood the list with my rant but I figure that as a former S&R person if u can't trust a bunch of marines there is no one u can trust

You will not go hungry until I starve, you shall not go thirsty as I have drink, you shall have my bed and be warm, you shall sit on my right as we feast in the great halls of our ancestors, and for when we die, and go to the great battle of valhalla....we shall stand together and fight ....at the end we shall look upon each other strewn with the blood of OUR enemies, and then....I shall call you FRIEND
