Yesterday, Haldur and I started going down a list trying to think of the result of mixing traditional Celtic styles with other flavors of music. Most of the different styles have been done, after all, that's how some of these new ones came to be. Maybe something has been missed though? Start by ruling out some that have been done:

Pop Rock -- it's called Celtic Folk Rock (Amadan, Emerald Rose, several others)
Metal -- See also: Ashley MacIssac
Country -- it wouldn't be country if it weren't Celtic. Specially Bluegrass
Techo -- Afro Celt Sound System
Blues -- Heather Dale -- "War Between Brothers"

There's more, and probably better examples than above. Hard to think perhaps, of somethat haven't been done. One I've got to mention... Has anyone heard any Celtic Disco? I can't imagine what it would sound like, but I do get this really funny image of Travolta's character from Saturday Night Fever, dressed in full highland dress (including kilt) and holding a set of pipes, while out there on the floor. I think I remember Paul saying he'd been sent some CDs that were almost a mix with Rap/Hip Hop? Let's have fun with this and see what wierd ideas come out of it! What can we come up with that might not have been done yet. Another one, Could you imagine Ace of Base doing "Wild Mountain Thyme" in a way that would fit on The Sign?

Some of these mixes, I know, would be disasters waiting to happen. But let's have fun with it smile.gif

I'm not sure about Celtic Disco...but I have heard some celtic funk. The artist is Neil Anderson, formerly of Seven Nations fame). His solo projects since 7N have been very interesting and very eclectic. Check out the album 'Full Circle' for any interested.

There was a little while when uilleann piper Paddy Keenan and Japanese guitarist Junji Shirota teamed up and toured a while. I'm not sure if any albums were cut in that time...but...I hear great things were made during their tour.

As for really out there celtic fusion....
There is a Breton man by the name of Patrick Molard who plays Highland and Uilleann pipes. Some of his more recent projects have included a violinsit, an indian tabla player, a bulgarian folk singer, and a jazz guitarist...ALL AT THE SAME TIME.
Needless to say...it's VERY interesting stuff.
Check out the album 'Deliou'

Celtic Punk has also been done. There are the bands Flogging Molly and Dropkick Murphy's that are a Celtic Punk mix. They are interesting because they take a lot of traditional songs or melodies and then just spin them differently. In the right mood they can be a lot of fun.

Celtic Hip-Hop would be an interesting take...I think the closest representation of that was done by House of Pain and that was only in their emblem of the shamrock! It would be interesting, yet at the same time, very painful to listen to (considering some hip-hop can be painful anyway!)

The Celtic disco I could see as well...thousands of disco dancers in leisure suits and kilts, playing "Morrison's Jig" or something snazzy like that! wink.gif

What would be even more invigorating would be Celtic-Latino music...wonder if that's been done yet?

"Space Piper" by Rare Air.....has a pic on the cover of a guy in full space suit, silver, air helmet and all.... in a kilt with a full set if pipes. New Age Celtic, anyone? Pretty good CD, too!
