If ever I hava a question about that kind of stuff I would just ask my brother. He's a wildlife biologist with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. There are many of you outdoors types who would enjoy talking with him. He's very passionate about hunting, conservation and don't even get him started on wetlands!

Arianrhod, those are really great sites!!! Thanks for posting them. I never know what to do when I find a baby animal. Especially birds. I just try keeping my dogs away from them.
We are hoping to get our garden area bunny proofed this year. We don't want a repeat of last year. Several bunny nests appeared in our garden. The mighty Dump, protector of the garden proceeded on a campaign of bunnycide. No more baby bunnies. My wife was totally grossed out.

The mighty Dump? Are we talking about a dog, cat or pernicious cannid?
I wouldn't EVER harm a wild creature that young! It is indeed beautiful.
I feed the bambies here. My spouse owns many guns as we are true Americans! Won't let him kill Babie, tho. We eat cow, pig, chicken, and vegy's.
Thanks for this post!!! It is grand

Paula, What a great picture! Where was Momma Bear, though? Were you all rescuing her cubs? What happened?

Thats from the Brown Bear Study... The Momma of that cub, is a runner...she took off every year when we went to check the cubs... but did not go far ..
These bears in this area, around the Laurel Higlands.. have been monitered for the last twenty years... they tend to stick around where they grew up...
Those girls behind me , live not fifty feet from the den.. they have never not had a resident brown bear sharing the farm I have to scan the pic of the men LOL , hiding in the barn...
The bears in the study were radio collared , and in the case of this one bear, had a family to watch her activities.. most were in the deeper woods..
Bears give birth while they are hibernating, is'nt Mother Nature SMART ! This study took place in the very early spring.. before the bears had even passed the "plug" that keeps them from messing the den.. The rangers went in and jab sticked mom.. then checked her out , changed her collar if need be, took a bit of blood, they have a natural immunity to Limes Disease.. so their blood is used for study .. We students got to check the cubs.. take hair samples, a few swabs for Graham stains.. they did'nt fear us at all, just accepted us, and let us do what we had to.. when we held them, they just held us back... pretty amazing.. then when we were all done.. a salve something like Vics Vapor Rub , but more pungent.. right on top of the cubs head, and a bit for Mama Bears nose, and we left them, just as we found them.. By the time Moma comes to, the cubs have been all over her, and each other, what scent is left, the salve covers ... Another interesting thing, about that bear, she allways had twins,, allways.. After a few years , you got to know their habits, and pretty much where you would find them bedded down for the winter, the collars helped.. but they were pretty consistant with the teritory .. It was a blessing to be part of that study ...
I hope your daughters Birthday was all her heart desired !
Todd.. I do enjoy things that go FLUSH in the night and the outdoors can be your own backyard ... Been a while since my Sr HS Outward Bound trip ... Most of my "camping" is done at the Pennsic War these days.. it's far from primative ..
Getting to be part of that study was awesome.. Those baby bear cubs.. and the total lack of fear , and the total accpetance of what we were doing. Was a Blessing and a lesson I will carry for the rest of my life..
