Welsh Events in Chicago – Spring/Summer 2010
2009 was yet another great year of Welsh reading, rugby and rock n’ roll in Chicago! Between the Wales v USA rugby at Toyota Park, readings from Welsh authors Rhys Bowen & Niall Griffiths, a 5-week run of the Dylan Thomas play, “Under Milk Wood”, and concerts with The Manic Street Preachers, Tom Jones, Paul Potts, Los Campesinos!, Bullet for my Valentine, Oceans Apart, Judith Owen and multiple performances by our local Chicago Welsh artists Jon Langford (The Waco Brothers) and Elia Einhorn (The Scotland Yard Gospel Choir).
2010 is shaping up to be another year of top quality Welsh events in the windy city, with all that is going on Chicago could be the best place to be Welsh outside of Wales!!

Hi,
I just found out that a classic Welsh sitcom called 'Satellite City' has just been released on DVD.
The sitcom was made by BBC Wales and first broadcast in 1996. The setting was an imaginary small town in the South Wales valleys. The plot centred on the arrival of Randy (Michael Neill), an American visitor, who was taken in by the Price family (but had to share a bed with pensioner Idris, played by Islwyn Morris}. Randy soon formed a relationship with local girl Mandy (Shelley Miranda Barrett). The other main characters were Idris's son, Gwyn (played by Boyd Clack, who also co-wrote the series), Gwyn's wife Moira (Ri Richards), and barman Dai (Rhodri Hugh). In the final series Randy moved into his own flat with Mandy. There are continual references to Idris's ferrets (presumably a family pet), but they are never seen on screen.
The 6 disc set contains:
* 10 ½ hours of Satellite City * Includes all three series (18 Episodes) * Never before seen photos from the show * Also includes the one hour special, From Here to Maternity * And the rarely seen one hour pilot episode!
Only available at www.satellitecitystore.com

10 Questions with Karen Ann of 'Trelew' Welsh singer Karen Ann grew up in the South Wales valleys and started performing in eisteddfodau (traditional music competitions) at school. She left Wales at eighteen and fell in love with Latin America after going AWOL in Mexico at 21. She’s played in jazz duos in Costa Rica and rock bands in Argentina and sung tango in English in the USA. Finally putting down roots in one of South America’s smallest countries she felt the tug of her own and returned to singing Welsh and Celtic traditional music, forming a duo with the guitarist Jorge Galemire in 2005 which evolved into Trelew in 2007. Q1 – What part of Wales are you from? The South Wales Valleys – a small village called Maes-y-cwmmer in the Rhymney Valley. My parents still live there. I was born in Newport, Gwent. Q2 – When did you emigrate to Uruguay and why? I'd been fascinated with South America, particularly Argentina, since I was a child. I can still recall a primary school geography lesson about the gauchos. I ended up marrying an Argentinian and we lived in Costa Rica, Liverpool, Buenos Aires and Washington before moving here in 2000. Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay where we live, is across the River Plate from Buenos Aires. It's a small city, quaint, right on the water and it has a great quality of life. I'm a Valleys girl and Buenos Aires is just too huge for me. Q3 – You are the founder of a Welsh band called "Trelew' in Uruguay, how did this come about? We chose the name Trelew because of its Welsh and South American roots. It's the name of a town in Patagonia, founded by Welsh immigrants in the 1880s. We're not exactly a “Welsh band” - though we definitely draws on Welsh traditional songs and our own lyrics have Welsh themes – like the Welsh emigration to Patagonia. We wrote the songs after reading the diaries of some of the early colonists – incredible epic stuff. Another of our songs is about my grandmother's life growing up on charity in Aberdare after her father suffered an accident down the pit. So Welsh issues are important to our music but we're based in South America and all of the musicians except me come from Latin musical traditions. Q4 – How would you describe your music? Traditional British folk meets Buenos Aires melancholy meets Pampas zamba (a type of South American folk rhythm). People have told me our new album could be used a film soundtrack, it evokes sweeping South American landscapes, journeys across the sea. Galemire, the guitarist is amazing. He has created these walls of acoustic guitars that are just incredible. Then there's the bandoneon which is such a haunting instrument – completely associated with tango - though South Americans who know the bandoneon will find that it sounds completely original in this album. There's definitely something about the “old country” and something definitely South American about it, and the fusion has its own life. Q5 – Do you have any plans to tour in the America's or elsewhere overseas? We'd really love to play the States – it's amazing how many festivals there are going on... Right now we're putting together a tour of South Brazil. And of course, we really want to play in Trelew, Patagonia – we're working on that one Q6 – What do you miss most about Wales? Bacon butties and my nan. Q7 – Do you think you will ever move back to Wales? It's not really on the cards right now. Though I go back there all the time -all my family are there. Q8 - What are your dreams and ambitions for the future? We'd like to complete our “Welsh-Patagonian trilogy” which still has only two songs! Q9 –What do you think is the best way for Wales to go about raising its profile overseas? Publicise the countryside, the people are so friendly and the fact that it is a lot cheaper than London so worth going and spending at least a week. People who know who have been from this part of the world -IF they go at all- go for a day on the train to Cardiff. It's just not enough. My mum works in Caerphilly Tourist Information Centre next to the castle – so if anyone reads this and goes there, drop in and say hello Q10 - Do you have any messages for our Ninnau readers? We'd love to get greetings from the North of the continent. You can find us on Facebook and MySpace. Trelew's first album named Trelew was released in September. It's available at http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/Trelew and shortly on Amazon, Itunes and all other good internet stockists.

Cymanfa Ganu! Though for some reason it's called a Gymanfa Ganu in North America, I suppose it's gramatically correct but it still looks a bit odd.

Don't miss this opportunity for fellowship and Welsh culture in Pittsburgh!

Mike: A band who play wild Celtic music from Wales.Mike Brooks Vocals (and various stringed instruments), "Big Willy" Morrsion on drums, Kyle Jones on bass, Helen Blackburn fiddles and Delyth Jones squeezes (Accordion)
Americymru: What are the backgrounds of the people in the band and how did you end up together?
Mike: I originally formed the band when I was an expat; I was living in London. Lineups have changed over the years but Will has been there since pretty much the beginning. The rest we met as friends of friends. Kyle is from Cardiff like me. A friend from West Wales told me his sister plays accordion in a duo with a fiddler and that's how we met Del and Helen.
Americymru: You perform your own version of "Sospan Fach" . This , of course, is a traditional Welsh folk song about a small saucepan. For the benefit of our American readers can you tell us a little about this rather surreal ditty?
Mike: Sospan Fach words are silly but the song is more than the words. It's sung pasionately at rugby matches to support Wales or Llanelli (Town in West Wales). It was also sung going to te trenches in the first World War. So it's sort of more about the singing than the song, if that makes any sense.
Americymru: You've played the States before? Can you tell us a bit about that? How did you enjoy the experience?
Mike: We've come across twice for Celtic festivals in Florida and Chicago. On our first trip Will kept shouting "Where are we?" and we'd joyfully answer "In America!" it was a big deal, a big trip. The gigs went well and we were well recieved. I wrote the song "One Night Stand" on that trip - enough said! Chicago was great too. A well organised Welsh society, The "Chicago Taffia" met us there, with a limo. In fact both trips we got met at the airport and were given beer to drink on our way back from the airport. Each time I thought "I could like this country!" (Easily bought, eh?) Chicago is a huge and impressive town. The festival was big too, big crowds and a warm reception. It was great standing on stage looking at the Chiacgo skyline behind the crowd in Grant Park. That night we got to meet the locals to which always helps, if you can't do that then why travel? We're still in touch with a people in Chicago. I hope we return before too long.
Americymru: OK...now for a dumb question. A lot of your songs are about drinking. How important is that in Welsh culture and in particular in Cardiff?
Mike: Anyone who has seen St Mary's Street on a Friday or Saturday night would know. On those nights 50,000 people come into town to get drunk. Hen nights, stag nights, nights out with the lads or girls, birthdays, work nights, you name it. Drink is part of the culture the way food is in France or Italy. In Europe there is a North South divide with drink. Wales along with Irish, Scots amnd Scandinavians drink way more than those in the South. Tonight Cardiff Blues Rugby won a major cup so the fans will get drunk to celebrate. Cardiff City (Soccer) lost six nil so, to drown their sorrows, the fans get drunk.
Americymru: You have a song entitled "The Senghenydd Explosion" Care to tell us a little about the background to that?
Mike: This is true story about the worst mining disaster in Britsh history. 439 died in an explosion in a mine not that far North of Cardiff. Mining is a big part of the history of South Wales. To anyone who comes here I'd reccomend a visit to Big Pit mining museum where you actually go underground and get a glimpse of what life was like. Mining was and is a horrible job but it binds the community together as every day the miners put their lives in each others hands. Obviously this is true of miners the world over as well as of soldiers and sailors.
Americymru: "Auntie Henrietta o Sicago"...any resemblance to any real person alive or dead?
Mike: I didn't write this so I can't say if she was real. It's a fun song in Welsh about Chicago so we had to sing it when we went there. It's nice to sing about places you visit. Our accordion player at the time has an Auntie in Chicago so we dedicated it to her. I like to write songs about places we visit often blurring fact and fiction like in a drunken memory. "Celtic Bonding" is like that. I enjoy singing "The Modena Rambler" in Modena (Italy) or about Cardiff in Cardiff.Any Welsh songs about Portland?
Americymru: Where can people go to hear you play and buy your music?
Mike: We're on Silverwolf Records in the USA. If you can't get a CD in your local idependant record store, I'd say go to our Website www.herebedragons.info and we'll sell you one. I'll sign it too if you like. If you're too stingy to buy a CD then you get (different) songs for FREE buy joing the supporters club on the same site.
Americymru: What are your future recording and performance plans at the moment?
Mike: Well both are work in progress. We have gigs in the pipe line for Italy, Wales and the USA. The Left Coast Eisteddford is on 22nd August in Portland, Oregon. Hopefully we'll get a few other dates around it in the USA. At the moment we're working on three albums:- A "Best of" in English and Welsh translating songs we've done before, an album of songs connected with Welsh rugby and a new album of original material.
Americymru: Any further message for the members and readers of "Americymru".
Mike: Keep flying the flag, singing the songs and drinking the beer when you can. Also don't keep Welsh culture a secret, let non Welsh friends have a taste too.
Hwyl fawr!

Online poetry and short story competition for the Left Coast Eisteddfod.
The Welsh social network site AmeriCymru is running a poetry and short story writing competition as part of its online Eisteddfod.
What is an Eisteddfod? An Eisteddfod is a Welsh festival of literature, music and performance with a history dating back to at least the 12th century.
Though they have waned in popularity in the USA they are still very much a part of the popular culture in Wales, Australia, New Zealand and parts of Canada, Argentina and South Africa.
The National Eisteddfod of Wales is now the largest festival of competitive music and poetry in Europe. Over 6000 people competed at the 2006 National Eisteddfod with 150,000 visitors attending.
In August 2009, hoping to revive the fortunes of the Eisteddfod in the United States, AmeriCymru will host the first ever Left Coast Eisteddfod in Portland, Oregon.
The festival will feature live music, poetry readings from a number of top Welsh performers and writers and much more.

Wales at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival 2009
The sights and sounds of Wales are set to take centre stage at one of the major festivals in the United States next year.
Wales will be the featured nation at the 2009 Smithsonian Folklife Festival, a festival which takes place annually on the National Mall in Washington, for 10 days at the end of June and the beginning of July.
The Festival celebrates the cultural traditions of communities across the United States and around the world, and an exciting programme featuring more than 100 specialist participants awaits visitors to next year’s festival.
Speaking at the launch of Wales Smithsonian Cymru 2009 [13 November] in the Senedd in Cardiff Bay, First Minister Rhodri Morgan said:
“The main theme of Wales’ programme will be sustainability. Our programme will present a dynamic view of Wales, its cultural and economic impact on the world, with themes ranging from the traditional to the contemporary and highlighting diversity and innovation, past, present and future, and the use of traditional methods to create new solutions. Festival presentations will include music and literary performances, storytelling, animation, genealogy searches, Welsh language lessons, craft skills, building restoration, cookery demonstrations, industrial heritage and new technologies, farming methods, outdoor pursuits and traditional and modern medicine.
“To be the featured nation is a great honour for Wales. The Smithsonian Folklife Festival is a major event, which attracts over one million visitors from across the USA and further afield. This means that this will be a great showcase for Wales where a great many visitors will have the opportunity to learn more about Wales and its contemporary cultures and traditions. Hopefully, this in turn will inspire them to visit Wales to see the country and its beautiful landscape for themselves, which will give a boost to our economy and tourism industry.
“What a better sight than to see the deep-rooted and vibrant culture of Wales being showcased for ten days at the heart of the capital of the United States.”
In his response to the First Minister, Secretary Clough, of the Smithsonian Institution said:
“We are delighted that Wales will be featured at the 43rd Folklife Festival in our nation’s capitol in 2009. Special thanks to the First Minister Rhodri Morgan and everyone in his administration for joining our partnership. As 12th Secretary of the Smithsonian and one with strong Clough family connections to Wales I am particularly excited. We have much to celebrate and much to learn from each other. Welsh Cultural life will be available at the Smithsonian for generations as a result of this experience.”
Wales’ presence at the festival will be extended through ancillary programmes that will begin in March 2009 and will be presented in collaboration with partner organisations in Washington DC. These activities and events will include a wide range of contemporary arts, a focus on sustainable living and climate change and trade and tourism initiatives.

The 1997 film Twin Town tops my list, I must have seen it 20 plus times now. Trainspotting, Shallow Grave, Human Traffic, Edge of Love and Grand Slam are damn good films too.
A golden oldie is Proud Valley, an excellent film with Paul Robeson as an African-American singer/miner in the South Wales valleys in the late 30's early 40's.
Does Batman Begins with its pan Celtic cast Christian Bale (Welsh), Liam Neeson (Irish), Cillian Murphy (Irish) count as a Celtic film??
Hwyl

Trelew
If you have a minute check out this great little Welsh band I found down in Uruguay called Trelew - Trelew on MySpace
They are unmistakably Welsh but with some nice South American influences, really interesting sound.
Cheers

Come out to our 7th annual St. David's Day pub night and party, featuring Live Welsh musical entertainment with the notorious South Wales clubland act Jay Brook, Welsh dragon cocktails, free samples of The Glenlivet "the Single Malt that started it all", raffles for some quality Welsh Beers, CD's, t-shirts and much more…
Sunday March 1st, 6:00pm to whenever! The Elephant & Castle Pub 185 North Wabash Avenue, Chicago
At 10pm we will be making our annual trip to the ABC 7 studios on State Street to get some Welsh flags on the news & get some pictures outside the Wrigley Building lit up in the Welsh colours.
A $5 on the door donation would be appreciated to cover the room rental costs and entertainment, though if you are feeling a bit more generous we wont hold it against you.
I know it's a Sunday night, but that's no excuse to sit in at home, get a babysitter, dog sitter, whatever you need and come out for the night!
If you could send us an email to say whether you are planning on going or not it would be much appreciated and save me from getting any more grey hairs for a while at least…
Cheers
