All The Netscapes!, I haven't seen these in a long time

I can't get to CelticRadio using Netscape 2 because it couldn't handle all the advanced language of today.

This is a blast from the past for me. I started with Spry Mosaic and Trumpet Winsock back in the early 1990's. I use Firefox (Mozilla) today.

Maybe I'm the only one that finds this fascinating.

I'd like to try some of those old browsers out. I think my first experience with a browser was AOL....which wasnt much at the time.

You might not be able to use the old netscape, but I am able to use Mozilla to use the site, including listening to the music. Mozilla using the old netscape base code. It also cuts out a lot of the spy/ad-ware programs I have noticed. http://www.mozilla.org/ is where you can go to download it.

On another board I hang out at, we were discussing what could have been and he was talking about a choice he made back early to mid 90s. There were two up and coming technology companies he could have worked for. He said he ended up working 90+ hour weeks for months on end only to see the company go belly up after a year or two. Or he could have been employee 16 if I recall correctly of Netscape. I started browsing the web using Netscape 3.2 on Windows 3.11 machines and Mosaic on the Macs and I don't recall what version of Netscape I used on the Solaris machines. 10 short years ago this fall. *sigh*

I used netscape for a while way back when Netscape 4 was the big thing out. I really haven't used any other browser but IE for the past few years. I am thinking about downloading firefox to see if I will like it. Time for a change maybe??

Has anyone ever tried Opera? It's a very flexible and easily customized browser that is based on the Lycos.com site. Email, skins, style sheets, etc are are there and it's free though you do have to put up with a banner ad at the upper right-hand corner of the page, but it's worth it in my book. I can't go to a couple of places like banking or credit card sites due to their inability to recognize the browser's security settings, but then, I have those bookmarked elsewhere I've had Netscape for several years, since getting my first comp and love it! It's IS rather boring to look at with the same old grey skin all the time, but I dont go there for the beauty. I'ts my workhorse browser, so I don't worry about it really. I rarely use IE because it has too many issues with security!

Opera? It is my absolute favorite browser. If your sole complaint is color, grab the latest version and you can skin it however you like. Strange Truth is my preferred skin, no text and small buttons. It has the ability to save all the open pages on shut down, mouse gestures (e.g. right click and draw a Z ala Zorro and the page will close. Right-click a link and do an down up motion will open the url in a new background window), a built in pop-up blocker from way back when, the ability to masquarade other browsers (handy for IE only sites) and my favorite, tabbed browsing (instead of having 12 icons in my task bar, there is one and inside that instance there are 12 pages). Too many cool features to list but I install it whenever I make house calls to clean PC infected with spy/malware. I tell 'em to run this or firefox and then they'll only have themselves to blame if they install crap.

Based on what I've read here I decided to give Firefox a try. It's real nice. It has everything I've come to love about Netscape, and incorporates many of the features of Opera, without the banner ads. Like Opera, you can use mouse gestures for anything like going back and forth between pages and openning and closing tabs, although you have to install an extension for it. Which is another strenth. There are many extensions out there to expand the capabilities of Firefox. Very cool!
