When I was young So long ago And dreamed of Deeds heroic bold A warrior great I was to be A name renowned Through History. Heroes of the Ancient World Whose names we Know so clear Would gather nigh On Olympus high To bid me Welcome there. Was meant of course To be my lot A lowly sergeant, I Yet, without these Men with strip'ed arms What Armies would There be. What would great men Of conquest do without The likes of me. We are the ones Who hold men true And lead them To the fray We hardened men Of roughened mien Have often Saved the day. For we stood Firm and rallied Those who turned To run away No Colours taken But o'er our blood Nor Eagle fall disgraced. And when the enemy Broke with fear Was we who Led the chase. A lowly sergeant I have been Through all these Many years And when I'm Called before the Gods I'll do so without fear. And I'll look at All the Heroes and Smile with a touch Of glee For without us Lowly Sergeants Not one would Be standing here. And of all these Conquering Heroes Gathered on that day There isn't one Whose really fit To draw a Sergeants pay. |
