For some, it's the open sea. For others (the masochists), it's the food. For you, it's definitely the fighting. You have the good fortune of having a good name, since Rackham (pronounced RACKem, not rack-ham) is one of the coolest sounding surnames for a pirate. Arr!
Get your own pirate name from fidius.org.

By the way, Hello everyone!!! I know it has been a long time.

Here is a good story I found....
The many mysteries of Rosslyn Chapel DIANE MACLEAN AS A BUILDING, Rosslyn Chapel, on the outskirts of Edinburgh, is intriguing. The exterior features Gothic gargoyles and flying buttresses, while inside there are ornate pillars, carvings and an extraordinary ceiling.
As a place of mystery, it is a magnet for those with exotic - some might say outlandish - theories.
Built in the mid-15th century by some of the best stonemasons in Europe, the chiselled scenes and symbols would have been easily understood by their medieval audience but seem baffling to us today.
The most striking example of their craft is the Apprentice Pillar, which is beautifully carved and entwined by stone coils. It symbolises the Tree of Life, with carvings snaking round from the bottom to the top. Supposedly carved by an apprentice, the master stonemason was so enraged when he saw the young man's work that he murdered him. The pillar itself has a number of outlandish theories attached to it.

Here is another interesting read about our mythical enchanting Scotland....
Great water monsters and mer-folk DIANE MACLEAN WATER-DWELLING beasties abound in Scotland. Monsters and mermaids frolic and swim in our lochs and seas from the Highlands to Lowlands. Some are shy, while others seem to bask in the limelight.
The one thing that connects them is that they've all been spotted. They've all been recorded and noted. And, furthermore, there are people out there who believe they exist.
No review of Scottish beasties could start anywhere else but with the Loch Ness Monster, or "Nessie" to her friends (and there are many of them). She has appeared in legend since the sixth century, but the building of a new road around the loch - just southwest of Inverness - in the 1930's brought her international fame. Sightings of this long, humped lady have been frequent ever since she was famously sighted in 1934 by a London surgeon who had the foresight to snap off a couple of photos ? and the sense to sell them to a daily paper.

OK, so how long has it been since the last time I posted in this topic?? Way too long I think....I found another wonderful read on Faeries:
You can find it here...
Exerpt:
Do you believe in fairies? DIANE MACLEAN IF YOU had asked your great-great-grandmother if she believed in fairies, she would have looked at you askance. Believe in fairies? Of course she did!
Ninety-five per cent of Scots continued to believe in fairies right up until the middle of the 19th century. These were not the diminutive, be-winged fairies of 1800s children's books. No, these were strange folk who bewitched you, killed your cattle and kidnapped your wives and daughters.
Fairy lore flowed through the centuries, their presence acknowledged in ballads, poems and stories. They came in all shapes and sizes and different parts of Scotland had different myths. Even today they are remembered in the fairy glens and fairy hills found in every part of Scotland.
This belief in fairies extended beyond Scotland; there was almost universal acknowledgement that they existed. |

Brian, I fully agree with you. We all have a proud heritage and more people should look to the past as lessons learned and try not to duplicate them. Hehe, I am an American with Scottish/German blood running through my veins and it is good to know where we came from and also where we are now.
It is interesting, if you read history from a native Indian's point of view it would definately be different then an American historian's view. So we should always weigh the information and source when doing research. I try to find a few different perspectives to get a better picture of history.
Thank you all for the input.
I hope I made some kind of sense. |

Just a question for you all,
Are any of the football teams in Scotland franchised as in someone owns the team or are they owned by the city, players, group of people? It would seem to me that a salary cap or if a corperation owned them there might not be a debt to resolve.
Just curious. |

Hehe, I love this topic. It seems there is such a play on words and even though they sound close but spelled differently, them mean the same thing.
Did that make any sense?? |

Hey all, back again with another round of fun and interesting facts:
The Scots were the tallest race in Europe, according to the 1909 Census. But the carnage of WW1 changed that. By the 1930s, the average height of men in Scotland had been reduced by 9 inches.
The Scots lost the greatest number of soldiers per head of population in WW1
Despite being a minority in a dominantly Protestant country, Scotland's Catholic Church has the greatest number of observed Saints days in the World.
Scotland was a completely separated land mass from England in the days of Pangaea. They collided millions of years ago, and stuck together ever since, but their geological composition is totally different.

I would drive and just get lost in Scotland. I find it annoying having to run to something different right when you are getting into it. I like the leasure stroll through the highlands or stop whenever you want to. |
