Celtic Quilting, Fabric, Etc, Patterns, history, advice, more!

Hey guys! I would love to chat with other folks who may do quilting and have any experience, advice, patterns, etc. I have started quilting and cross stitching, and there seems to be some good history on the internet about Celtic quilts, etc. Anyone out there want to weigh in? I would love to have a discussion about what kinds of quilting was done in what regions, what patterns you have tried or would like to, what fabrics are out there, just about anything So, guys and girls chip in here and tell me whether or not you quilt (or do other Celtic crafting or just crafting), any patterns you have tried, etc!!

I am just beginning myself, so I have made a few regular blocks but nothing as intricate as some of the Celtic patterns I have seen online. And it is so hard to know what would have been a pattern they might have used a long time ago, as opposed to the practice of putting celtic symbols on squares and calling that a Celtic quilt. Much of what I have read seems to indicate that the Irish women (at least from the 1800's forward) did the same type of quilting as most women in many other parts of the world - with scraps of fabric in patterns that were being used all over the world at that time. I have read, though, that certain areas in Northern Ireland were known for producing mostly red and white quilts, for instance. I will have to look for those articles again and post them here.

Thank you for the link to a very interesting history of Irish quilts!

I too am a quilter and I plan to do a Celtic styled quilt in the future. Finding patterns that they may have used is a challenge. Very interesting (and sad) that many people used a single coat on their bed for warmth! Also very interesting, and kind, that the gentlewomen would teach those in their employ needlework. That act of kindness may very well have saved lives, as the women could then put together whatever scraps they had at their disposal to create blankets to warm their families on cold winter nights!
