Maureen O'Hara passed away today. R.I.P.

"She passed peacefully surrounded by her loving family as they celebrated her life listening to music from her favorite movie, 'The Quiet Man,'" said a statement from her family.

Maureen O'Hara was one of the most gracious and lovely women to ever be in film. Her passing is a loss to everyone who loved quality film. She was a true patriot honoring both the USA and her native Ireland, a lady both countries can be very proud of. My prayers for her and her family and her fans everywhere. Thank you for being part of our lives.

The Duke, Barry, Ward and Herself will be putting on some fine performances in that glorious theater in the hereafter. In my eyes she is the Grand Dame of Hollywood, not only for her beauty, grace and longevity but her strength and dignity. And nary a scandal nor hint of controversy...

Maureen O'Hara's top ten movies and her comments:

1. "The Quiet Man"

"I have often said that "The Quiet Man" is my personal favorite of all the pictures I have made. It is the one I am most proud of, and I tend to be very protective of it. I loved Mary Kate Danaher. I loved the hell and fire in her. As I readied to begin playing her, I believed that my most important scene in the picture was when Mary Kate is in the field herding the sheep and Sean Thornton sees her for the very first time. It's a moment captured in time, and it's love at first sight. I felt very strongly that if the audience believed it was love at first sight, then we would have lightning in a bottle. But if they didn't, we would have just another lovely film.”

Did you know that in the scene where she comes to sweep out "White O' Morn" when the Duke grabs her and kisses her and she takes a swing at him, she broke a bone in her hand. She tells of it on the Special Edition DVD where she narrates the entire movie, a must watch if you have the opportunity.Though me thinks she'll get over it , there are some things a man can't get over...

I just read that she is to be buried in Arlington National Cemetery, next to her husband. I didn't know that they did that?? I thought it was for soldiers only.

Her husband, Charles F. Blair Jr. is was a trans-atlantic aviation pioneer. He was Captain in the USN and a Brigadier General in the USAF having a pretty impressive career in the military and later in the private sector....

Yes truly a class act, and not just her acting but her life. I've read a few pieces about the mutual respect and admiration concerning the friendship between herself and the Duke, quite uplifting and sometimes humorous. Her husbands' life also quite impressive.
The Quiet Man is a great film, but who can forget the mud brawl scene in I believe McClintock? I should check some reference on that but if I'm wrong would someone please correct me.
It was a time when a person could be proud to admire a celebrity. Though those people probably would not have considered calling themselves that.
May she rest in peace.

You are correct, the famous mud pit fight scene was in this film and a dandy it was too...So much to like about this film ( McClintock) and the people in it...She was true Hollywood royalty and the likes of which we may not see for a long, long time.

I loved watching those now classic films that Maureen O'Hara was featured in. Her characters were always strong-willed and strong women which let girls know it was OK to be intelligent and strive for their goals.

On the subject of Arlington National Cemetary, my dad was a WWII vet who survived D-Day and the entire war as a member of the Third Armored Division under Patton. No mean feat I can tell you! He chose to be cremated and we had him interred at Arlington. My mom was told that the crypt could accommodate her remains as well if she so chose.

Thank you for your father's service to this country. What the bleeding hearts today do not realize is that they can do and say as they like because it has been handed to them on the backs of those that served and sacrificed. Their blood, sweat and tears I pray will not fall on parched earth but nourish the soil and encourage new growth...

A man no fears a strong willed and intelligent woman, only those men of weak constitutions have anything to fear. Maureen O'Hara epitomizes these qualities not only in Hollywood, bit in society in general...

Nice thread!

Had the privilege on 2011 of going to Ireland and visiting many of the Quiet Man sites. Got to sit on the Quiet Man Bridge and even spend a night at Ashford Castle. We got to watch the movie in our room and then go explore the next day. Truly a blast!

She was an amazing talent.

That must have been wonderful indeed, would very much like to do that myself one day. I would love to have a pint of porter and a glass of whiskey at the pub, that would be grand. A whole industry has grown out of the movie there in Cong. Cohan's Pub was a grocery store at the time of the filming, later to be a souvenir shop until finally being turned into an Irish Pub by none other than Tara MacGowran the daughter of Jack MacGowran, the actor portraying Feeney in the film. Maybe we should have a separate thread dedicated to the film itself? What do you think?
