February 19, 2018 - CelticRadio.net - Iona is a group consisting of a host of talented musicians and performers, keen on offering their own rendition of some of the best Scottish, Irish and Gaelic tunes with a very personal twist.

Their music is not only inspired by the timeless traditions of Celtic folk, but it also dives deeper into ancestral European traditions from France, Cornwall and Spain, while tipping the hat to American roots music.

Barbara Ryan, lead singer and multi-instrumentalist, started the project with Bernard Argent back in 1986. Eventually, the pair were joined by Jim Queen (fiddle), as well as Chuck Lawhorn (bass). Ever since their early days, Iona managed to make an impression on the Mid-Atlantic regions, due to their technically sophisticated, yet emotionally engaging performances and record releases.

The pair’s studio effort, “Signature” is a perfect example of the group’s ongoing musical legacy and strong personality. Featuring 10 songs, the album has a lengthy and extensive set list with a really eclectic feel.

Opening number “Hai O” immediately creates an authentic vibe, with a stellar production value that honestly feels like witnessing the band playing live in a room. One of the strongest aspect of this production is indeed the fact that the band sounds exactly like what it is…a great live band, with musicians who know how to feed off each other’s mood and performance value.

One of my favorite tracks on this release, “Bold Doherty”, is a great examples of the band’s natural storytelling abilities, and it almost feels like an old Sailor’s tail, performed with a sense of rapt enchantment and cinematic textures.

Tracks such as “Una Fille De Rose” offer a powerful insight on the band’s sonic diversity, with vocals in France and entrancing melodies that depict the band’s diverse and vast background.

“Bolero / Galvadeg” is also worthy of a very special mention. The lengthy instrumental introduction of this song is particularly special and richly nuances with some spectacular details.

This album is ultimately, a fantastic testimony, highlighting the work and dedication of a band that has never stopped to pursue quality through the years and earns five stars from Celtic Radio.
