Outlander - A Scottish Tale

August 10, 2014 - CelticMusicRadio.com - If you like shows about Scotland, Clans, Romance and fighting then you will probably love the new Starz series called Outlander. As one of the most popular book series ever, Outlander is making its way onto television this week.

"Outlander" follows the story of Claire Randall, a feisty married combat nurse from World War II. Shortly after the end of the war, she takes a second honeymoon to the Scottish Highlands with her husband. While visiting a Pagan Stone Circle, Claire is mysteriously swept back in time to 1743, where she is kidnapped by a clan of Scotsmen (Highlanders) including a young warrior by the name of Jamie Fraser. When she is forced to marry Jamie Fraser, a chivalrous and romantic young Scottish warrior, a passionate affair is ignited that tears Claire’s heart between two vastly different men in two irreconcilable lives.

Outlander is a 16 episode series filmed in Scotland. It is an original series adapted from Diana Gabaldon's international bestselling books and will air on Starz. Diana Gabaldon’s seven-book series has sold more than 20 million copies and has graced the New York Times best-sellers list six times. The eighth installment of the “Outlander” series is slated to be released in June 2014. The “Outlander” series spans the genres of romance, science fiction, history, and adventure in one grandiose tale. To tell the story best, here is what the author says about the book on her website:

"In 1946, after WWII, a young Englishwoman named Claire Beauchamp Randall goes to the Scottish Highlands with her husband, Frank. She’s an ex-combat nurse, he’s been in the army as well, they’ve been separated for the last six years, and this is a second honeymoon; they’re getting re-acquainted with each other, thinking of starting a family. But one day Claire goes out walking by herself, and comes across a circle of standing stones—such circles are in fact common all over northern Britain. She walks through a cleft stone in the circle….and disappears. Back into 1743, where the first person she meets is a gentleman in an 18th-century army officer’s uniform. This gentleman, Jack Randall, looks just like her husband Frank—and proves to be Frank’s six-times-great-grandfather. Unfortunately, he also proves to be a sadistic bisexual pervert, and while trying to escape from him, Claire falls into the hands of a gang of Highland Scots, who are also trying to get away from Black Jack Randall—though for other reasons.

In order to avoid being handed over to Captain Randall, Claire is obliged to marry one of the young clansmen. So she finds herself trying to escape from Castle Leoch and her Scottish captors, trying to get back to her husband Frank, trying to avoid being recaptured by Captain Randall—and falling in love with Jamie Fraser, the young man she’s been forced to marry. The story rolls on from there…"

Claire Randall is played by Caitriona Balfe and Jamie Fraser by Sam Heughan. At it's core, Outlander is a love story and according to Sam Heughan, the first kiss between the two characters was "pretty hot"; although Caitriona and Sam had to shoot a much steamier scene before they could act out those first intimate moments!
