Val
Thank you so much smile.gif the yard really changed this year with the fence.. the guys who installed it were very carefull, but some things were lost to damage.. and some ended up on the other side.. So this was the first summer with the new changes.
After trial and error and tears , I found that planting on paper first , works..
and you really do get an idea of what you are going to have..
I got a gardening mag , and requested catalogs from all the places that had them for free... books are fine, but you don't really want to cut the picutures out..
andyou really learn alot from the catalogs..
You will never be un happy with a lot of perennials.. and it does save time..
and mulch ! it is the best time saver, saves on watering.. and weeding..
Once you have your beds the way you want them, thats what takes most of your time..
Gardening is good for the soul.. you sort of get to play Mother Nature, what could be bad !

Happy Thanksgiving to you too Val!
and again my thanks for your kind words..

McHaggis..
Your neighbors wife was a smart lady !
Container gardening is awesome tho.. you can really grow just about anything..
I grow stawberries in pots.. I hope you do too, you can still have that smell in your life !
Funny thing bout bad winters, the harsher they are,,
the sweeter the spring..
Planning is great on a dull day.. it sends it home , that spring will come smile.gif

Hope everyone one is just wonderful today..

Paula

I made an expensive mistake a wile back: I bought an orchid plant for my owner. We are now hip deep in orchid plants. Even though they are rather pricey, the blooms of many varieties last for months and are beautiful. It turns the dining room into a bright garden.

Oh, I LOVE orchids!!!!! I used to have about 70 different types. ( But my 1st wife went a little wacky and got rid of them all...) I have yet to start growing them again. Have not had the time. But, I plan on getting a few. I would like to get some they call 'draculas'. Because they are very low light plants. I'd like to put them in our library at home. Which is sortta dark, and warm....

Has anyone ever smelled the orchid - Oncydium 'sherry baby'??? Smells just like a Hershey bar! tongue.gif tongue.gif tongue.gif

I have encountered the "chocolat orchid", but passed it up because it wasn't as pretty as many of the others. My wife is very happy on the weekends when I announce that we have some coins to blow and can go "weed shopping". thumbup.gif

Probably over watering. They are very particular about that and different varieties have different requirements. The amount of sunlight and whether or not it is filtered (like through sheer curtains) can also have an impact. Also, if you tell them every morning how ugly they are they get discouraged. sad.gif

Sis A,
You have to be gentle with them. You just can't tell an orchid "Grow, dammit!"
Their feelings get hurt! wink.gif They like Loreena McKennit music, try that. biggrin.gif

Try to keep them away from the rap and acid rock. Harp music is good.

You mean it won't work yelling at them? What kind of environment do they like...if Barddas will come back here I'd like to ask him for some help on what I'm doing wrong...I only water once a week and I keep them warm and indirect sunlight. So what am I doing wrong?

my mom's orchids reacted on low soft music and gentle talk.. no joke! My mom's orchids always grew like they were supposed to..

My own proved failures, maybe I didn't spend enough time with them *sighs* bloody plants!
