Background: This name, now inextricably linked with the history of the Scottish nation through its association with the victor of Bannockburn, was ancient long before that momentous battle. It is believed that Adam de Brus built the castle at Brix between Cherbourg and Valognes in Normandy in the eleventh century, the ruins of which still remain. Robert de Brus followed William the Conqueror, Duke of Normandy, to England in 1066, and although he is thought to have died soon after, his sons acquired great possessions in Surrey and Dorset.

Variations: Bruce, Brus, Carlyle, Carruthers, Crosbie, Randolph, Stenhouse

One of my families is Legg which is listed as being from the lands where the Bruce Clan was in charge. I find no record of the Legg name as being a Clan but have seen reported that it is a Sept of the Bruce Clan. But when I consult modern Bruce Clan they tell me there are only 5 Septs of the Bruce and that Legg is not among them. yet www.scotsweb indicates it is. Can you help me resolve this issue?

There are many septs to names. In fact, sometimes many family names claim the same family septs.

Probably has to do with different time periods in history and different locations. What is your surname?

My surname is Randolph. Both sides of my family actually come from Scotland. Surnames Randolph and Glendenning which I was told changed from Glendonwyn. I am presently trying to build my family tree but I have yet to find anything that matches what I have for Randolph and I have found nothing about Glendonwyn.
