I saw the Red Tail to day. It was about 5:20 in the afternoon, when sun was about a thumbs length away from setting. And there he was, soaring around in a crisp, power blue sky, just like he owned the place, and of course he does!

You don't mean Pale Male, our own urban redtail legend? I think I saw him once around Fifth Avenue and 90th Street. He owns the place all right -- anybody bothers him and Lola, the whole city is up in arms.
Stoirmeil, I don’t think this Red Tailed Hawk is Pale Male, but he probably a relative, since I live just across the mighty Hudson, from that insane asylum, called Manhattan.
I’m sure that Swanny could describe a Red Tailed Hawk better, but it’s of course a bird of pray, around the size of an Eagle. Really quite beautiful!
Ahhh, I love the red tail hawks. Smaller than an eagle, but still a large bird to be flying around people and houses. We actually have quite a few in our area now who live amoungst us in suburbia. Far cry from the barren fauna of my childhood - the reults of industrialism. Everytime I see a hawk, I am encouraged, things can be changed. The legislation began in the 70's made a difference. Suburbia is now a thriving ecosystem with predators besides cars and kids with bb guns. Lots of squirrels, songbirds and plump pigeons to eat.
Stopped and watched a red tail sitting on a low roof, freshly killed squirrel in his talons, just the other day. One of these days I'm gonna crash my car into something because I'm watching the hawk. They are beautiful birds, but up close you make no mistake as to their power and merciless talons and beak. It's all about the kill, all about survival. It freaked my daughter out when it turned its eye on her. At 75 pounds I think she's safe, but locking eyes with a hawk is an unforgettable experience. We were so close we watched the wind ruffle its feathers, so full and soft appearing. The rusty red of it's tail the buff and white of the breast.
Beautiful creatures..
Richard Bercot used to have a red tail he talked to every day.
Writing-wise, Johnny... I love "when sun was about a thumbs length away from setting. " Wonderful image.

Compassion is the sometimes fatal capacity for feeling what it is like inside somebody else's skin. It is the knowledge that there can never really be any peace and joy for me until there is peace and joy finally for you too. - Frederick Buechner
