I put down Loreena McKennitt, because she is superb, but there are so many that I like that it is hard to pin it down to one, and it also depends on my moods at the time!

Moya Brennan is another that I buy any CD she puts out, whether on her own or with "Clannad"

Anúna

The Chieftans

Flogging Molly

Seven Nations (Clan na gael)

and local favs

The McIlroys

Tinker's Dam(n)

The Wyndbreakers

There are soooo many.

Blackmore's Night is the absolute best!

But I wouldn't class them as Celtic, as such. Closer to Renaissance or Mediaeval Rock.

I just got their "Paris Moon" DVD, and think it is better than "Castles and Dreams" even though I like C&D for the setting better (in a Castle at a Ren Fest).

Along with Blackmore's Night, I would add Steeleye Span and Pentangle.

Had to put "other" as well. There are just too many top notch groups not mentioned here. The Cheiftans, for instance. How could you leave off the superstars of Irish music? Also love the Elders, Dropkick Murphys, Steeleye Span, Tannahill Weavers, and dozens of others.

Who's heard Albanach? Outstanding music. What a beat.

I am a flood: across a plain,
I am a wind: on a deep lake,
I am a tear: the Sun lets fall,
I am a hawk: above the cliff,
I am a thorn: beneath the nail,
I am a wonder: among flowers,
I am a wizard: who but I
Sets the cool head aflame with smoke?

I am a spear: that roars for blood,
I am a salmon: in a pool,
I am a lure: from paradise,
I am a hill: where poets walk,
I am a boar: ruthless and red,
I am a breaker: threatening doom,
I am a tide: that drags to death,
I am an infant: who but I
Peeps from the unhewn dolmen, arch?

I am the womb: of every holt,
I am the blaze: on every hill,
I am the queen: of every hive,
I am the shield: for every head,
I am the tomb: of every hope.

Hey all,

I voted "other" cause I am a huge Celtic Thunder fan... they have a way about them that has their dedicated fans getting into all things Celtic/Irish/Scottish... you can't ask for something better for tourism purposes in this economy!! They are bringing traditional music to masses of Americans and other international audiences, while playing cover songs, original music and traditional Celtic tunes. And they are all as hot as their rich voices!! Plus, almost all the lads play instruments, even if not in the show (on their own recordings). Many fans have sought out Celtic history/culture/jewelry, etc., you name it, and have picked up on Irish lingo and Gaelic Irish because the lads speak it... nw that is what I call an influential artist!!

I listened to some Celtic music here and there... nothing serious... an MP3 here or there... or at a Ren Faire... owned a few Celtic Woman cds... but Celtic Thunder has made me a Celtic music fan and I have sought out other artists cause of them...

I LOVE CELTIC THUNDER!! My <3 belongs to Ryan Kelly, Keith Harkin, Paul Byrom, Neil Byrne, Damian McGinty and George Donaldson!!

As others have already said, there is such a plethora to chose from it is hard to pick ONE. wink.gif

However, if I must chose it would be Ryan's Fancy thumbs_up.gif . The members are Denis Ryan, Fergus O'Byrne, and Dermot O'Reilly. Their rendition of The Cross at Spancil Hill is likely my all-time favourite song and if you have the chance to pick it up on 'The Irish Love Songs' album do yourself a favour and snap it up! Yes, I said album as i don't think it ever made it to C.D.

Check out their impromptu vocals at the East Coast Music Association's presentation for a Lifetime Achievement Award. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sMl45MrUmm8...feature=related

I like Loreena McKennit and Maddy Prior but I'd also add Sandy Denny (!!). Group? Well, not strictly Celtic, but the Incredible String Band and Pentangle, Solas, Karen Casey and her band, the Chieftans of course, Mary Jane Lammond to name a few. Some singers who sing in Welsh too: Julie Murphy and Sion James.
