Tapadh leat! I probably have enough info to process now! I have one more question and then I'll try to leave you alone for awhile!! (Try being the operative word there!!)

Can you tell me a good English-Gaelic Dictionary? Or maybe two or three?! Something I can have at quick reference here at home when I'm not online?
I would be forever grateful!! biggrin.gif

Yes, that was very informative and helpful! Now I just have to decide which I think would be best for my learning, and my budget!!

Did it actually take you the full 7 years to be able to understand song lyrics? And how often did you work on the language during those 7 years? (just trying to gauge my progress and set future goals!!) biggrin.gif

Tapadh leat, Ailean! You have been a big help these last few days!!

QUOTE (WizardofOwls @ 08-Apr-2005, 07:08 PM)
QUOTE (Faileas @ 08-Apr-2005, 12:51 PM)
I pronounce "chuideachadh"      "chodjochoo"  with both chs pronounced like in "loch" and the ooh- sound very short, close to the sound that some people make when they see something disgusting ... ( wink.gif )but probably other dialects do otherwise, hehe. Nae mind, ye wont go wrong with this one  smile.gif .

All the other things are completely okay.  biggrin.gif

Hallo a Fhaileas a ghridh!
Hello Faileas dear!

Tapadh leat airson do chuideachaidh!
Thanks for your help!

Ceist bheag, ma tha.
A small question, however.

In the above, I was attemtping to give a pronunciation for "chuideachaidh". Notice that it is slenderized. That should affect that final vowel sound, shouldn't it?

And as far as the ch sounds goes, the one that I said sounded like ch in church, you rendered as "dj" in your pronunciation guide. Aren't they nearly the same sound? Your's is just vocalized a little more than mine.

If ye insist on it ye can prounounce that final sound in choodjeachag, but it is hardly heard and very, very soft. That dh and gh sound is really devellish ... The best description i ever heard is "It is the sound that a baby makes all the time - so it is a sound that is natural to mankind, we just have forgotten about it."

And concerning that "ch" - sound .... church sounds to me different than choodjachadh ..... Maybe it is just my ears or the way that i learnt to pronounce it?

church vocalized would be tshertsh to me or something like it (i know the ur sounds different but there is no equivalent letters to it ...). That middle sound in chuideachadh is much softer than that - more like die - french for god. of course when ye bog it down church is all about chuideachadh and die, nach eil ?

wink.gif cool.gif

Yes, it certainly is all about help and God!! Does anyone possible have a link, or know where to find one, where I could hear a recording of that word said? Perhaps that would help me figure it out!

Tha mi 'n dochas gun dean i "chuideachadh" air do shon (I hope that she will do "chuideachadh" for you) agus bheir mi seoladh p.-d. aice dhut ma bhios cead agam (and i will give you her e-mail when i have her permission). Chan eil fhios agam de eile a dheanamh ... (I don't know what else to do ...)

Hello, a Rois, 's math d' fhaicinn an seo a-rithist (hello, rose, its good to see ye here again). Tha mise cho dona riut fhein , alas (i am so bad as yourself, hehe) wink.gif

Hallo Faileas!!

I learn things better by repetition, so the more I post here the better I will get (I hope!) Not to mention all the help I get from you and Allen!! So I don't mind at all!! The more help I can get the better! Tapadh leat, for the email about the sound file!! I have been looking around online off and on to no avail!!

Hallo Rs!!

According to the notes I have (and I dont' remember what website it was from!!) I was trying to say:

'Ciagmar tha 'dol dhut, an-diugh=How are things going for you
D sersa sde a th'agaibh=What kind of weather do you have
Tha i briagha agus grianach ann an Nebraska an-diugh=It is bright and sunny in Nebraska today. Apparently I didn't do it right!!

I know exactly what you mean Rs!! I feel like breaking out my old school books to relearn how to diagram a sentence or something!! And, of course, there are exceptions to every rule and I tend to find them all!! Go figure!!

Thank God for Allen and Faileas!! That's all I have to say!! biggrin.gif
