I just finished "The Lovely Bones" by Alice Sebold. Being such a popular book, I was wondering if anyone was disappointed by the ending. Call me old-fashioned, but I was looking for some climax and then a resolution. I wanted action. But all I got was a pile of bones after reading for 2 days.

I couldn't even finish the first chapter I was crying so hard. It was, IMHO, a very disturbing book, and I chucked it the first chance I got. I just can't handle stuff like that, especially when they are talking about children.

what is kind of scary is that the book was so popular. They talked about it for a month on GMA. But GMA is owned by ABC who seem to like to promote sex, such as "Desperate Housewives."

Well, it seems to be the fad of the day to publicize all the many horrific ways of killing someone (i.e. CSI, etc.) It seems like every time I turn around there is some new show on where murder is obsessed over. I don't know - it makes you wonder what they will put on next.

I really dunno. It was a good read until the ending I think. And I didn't like the fact that towards the end the author basically says: Hey! This is what my title means!!! "The Lovely Bones are:..." etc.
In case you are stupid and cannot get the title, here is what it means!
That was kind of annoying too. Don't get me wrong. I like lots of books. But I read some obscure ones, and I knew this one was really popular, so I thought it could be discussed by my wonderful CR friends. You guys are the best!

When they just bluntly give you the ending to a book, it ruins it for me! That's of course just a personal opinion!

What are you talking about? We haven't given away the ending, nor does the title.

I haven't read it yet at all. to be perfectly truthful, it just doesn't appeal to me. I, too, have a hard time reading books about a child who is murdered or abused and since I do know this, I haven't picked it up, though I've had many chances too at the library book store that I volunteer at.

They have a whole shelf of "OPRAH" books. Truthfully, I can't stand her either, so it's unlikely that I'll ever read one she reccommends.

I hate Oprah as well, but unfortunately, my two favorite books are on her list: White Oleander and The Lovely Bones.

The ending, well, *SPOILERS!!!!!*

I didn't like how Harvey didn't really get his in the end. It seems like Susie's whereabouts will forever be a mystery, so her family never gets closure. But somebody on a different board suggested that Susie killed Harvey by the icicle b/c she mentions earlier in the book (when Lindsay is at the Symposium for Gifted Students) that the perfect murder weapon would be the icicle.
