Just got off the Dell site from ordering my new computer. Has plenty of "GO" to it, which always makes it much easier to listen to CR.
You may ask, why didn't I order speakers. The answer to that is, I still have my Bose set that can blow the roof off the house.

The only bad thing about it is it has Bill Gatesware on it. Dell doesn't offer Lynux. I did complain about that.

Here's the specs:

Don't worry about unk Bill and his claws, Dells make perfect Linux platforms. In fact the only thing that makes have XP on the platform to start with is that unk Bill picked up some of the tab for what should be an awesome Linux box when your done. biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

I wish I were in the position to get a new PC at home. Our system is a 500 MHz pip-squeek. The only good aspect about is... Um.... Ok, there isn't anything good about it. One of the main reasons I want one is so the kids will leave my laptop alone. The PC is too old to play some of their games. My laptop is only about 8 months old, so it plays anything currently available.

I'm so jealous!

I think that is the project for the computer I'm running now. I would like to see what Linux is all about and this computer I'm running now should work fine for that.

A Shrule Egan,

You will find Linux works well on most systems even old ones. I have an old Pentium system with 32Mb of Ran that runs Linux and is my firewall. I like a faster machine for my workstation.

I would suggest using GNOME as your GUI but keep the KDE applications handy. I like Galleon for my web brouser and Kmail for e-mail. Hope that helps and have fun. biggrin.gif

Linux will love that 500 Mhz box smile.gif One of the more minor things I like about Linux is its scalability. I've got here next to me a AMD XP 2700 w/ 1 GB RAM, and a 486 DX2/50 w/ 12 MB RAM. Both run LFS, and both run great =) Granted I only ask a remote console, IRC, and some web browsing of the 486 most of the time, leaving All the graphics to my AMD... But the 486 still does just peachy for everything I use it for. I think I'll keep it online for quite some time regardless of what else I get going, because it does so well. Over 1/3 of the 12 MB is being used as cache atm, and nearly half a MB free.

I've got a PIII 500Mhz Gateway sitting on my desk that happily runs Mandrake 10.0. I work for a Linux consultancy in Springfield, TN and most of us are using Mandrake. It installs easily, is stable and comes with all the tools you need to do just about anything. I do graphic design, page layout, photo editing and web research. The company uses open source software to turn an ordinary PC into a complete PBX that can utilize phone lines or VoIP. We use Linux mainly because it's rock solid. If an application crashes, it usually doesn't bring down your computer and require a reboot. One of our machines, running Mandrake 8.2, has not been shut down or rebooted for 467 days. After more than a year of using Linux at home and at work, I think the question isn't 'Why should I use Linux?' but rather 'Why would I use anything else?'
