There is an old Scottish drinking song that my mom used to sing to us when we were little. I was wondering if anyone else has ever heard it before....
The point of the song is the tongue twister at the end....
The lyrics are:
(please excuse my spelling, I am horrible at writing in dialect)

(The drunk sings)
Just a wee dunken dora
Just a wee 'un, thats all
Just a wee dunken dora
Afore I go abroad

There's a wee wif'e waitin
In a wee bunk'en ben

(The owner of the pub sings)
If ye can say "It's a broad brit, moon lit, nicht ta' nicht"
Then alright, ye can!

Thanks for any help anyone can give me!

I think your version might have got mangled in the translation, Crowned1.... cool.gif

A wee deoch an dorus
A wee deoch an dorus
a wee deoch, yen ken
Jist a wee deoch an dorus
Afore yr gang awa

Thurs a wee wife waitin, at a wee but an ben
If you can say 'it's a braw bricht moonlicht nicht, then yer awricht, ye ken'

This song wasn't a drinking song, it was made famous by Sir Harry Lauder, the caricature Scotsman who appeared in Music Halls all over the world and was knighted for his services to Scotland!

A wee deoch an dorus (pronounced 'doch - the 'ch' as in the word loch, not lock! an door us) is a drink
Afore ye gang awa - before you leave

There's a little woman waiting at a small house (2 rooms, 'but' and 'ben' the hoos)
'It's a good, bright, moonlight night'

Could be kindof sad in a way, depending on how much leaving is being done.

Yes... I knew that I would have the pronounciation all wrong! That is how my little American ears heard it though! Haha
That is the right song though! Thanks so much for the info! Do you know if there is any recorded version of it that we could hear on Highlander Radio?

Hello
No, sorry, I'm not sure whether it is available on any playing medium - although I seem to recall seeing old movie footage of Harry Lauder singing it from a Music Hall somewhere in the 30s or 40s (not that I was alive at that time, but they churn it out every so often on programmes about 'what being Scottish means...' cool.gif

Harry Lauder is one of the 'cringe' Scotsmen, that most of us try to forget - along with people like Andy Stewart (who could ever forget his 'Scottish soldier' or 'Campbelltown Loch'? wink.gif tongue.gif

Still, glad to have been of help to you with regards to the correct lyrics!

The song is Just a Wee Deoch an' Doris
Here's a link to the lyrics: A Wee Deoch an Doris
Steve Allbritton has a nice version on his album Memories of Home available from CDBaby.

Maybe we can talk Macfive into adding it to the playlist.

Cat,

You guys don't like Andy? I love songs like Blacbird, and Across the Wide Atlantic. Thought Silly Wizard was pretty popular over there, when they were together. Give me the scoop!

No... nooooooooo that's the WRONG Andy Stewart - I mean this one!!! cool.gif tongue.gif

http://www.moidartmusic.com/51.htm

He used to be rolled out every Hogmanay on TV ...... God, I go cold when I think of him... there are a few of his ilk, including the Alexander Brothers - who strike terror into the hearts of my folkie friends!

Silly Wizzard were much more popular about 10-15 years ago than they are now, but you still hear their music all the time on the radio.

Yes MacE.... how could we go about requesting this song to be added to the playlist? I would love to hear the real version of it, even if it was sung/written by a "cringe" Scotsman!! wink.gif
