Avalon has aways been the "land behind the curtain" in my opinion. The land were faeries, Sprites, gods, goddesses, and heros wait. They aren't trapped there, they are just waiting for a need to arise where people would need or call for their help.

Which brings up, did anyone see Mists of Avalon? Good mini-series. thumbs_up.gif thumbs_up.gif

Yes, I did see the mini-series, and even own it on DVD. It did suffer from one inescapable fatal flaw: I read the book first. biggrin.gif Even considering that, I feel they did a decent job of bringing the book to the screen. To me, they did play down Bradley's take on Christian hostility toward the old religions. It was there, but not as starkly portrayed as in the book.

As I said, a good flick. thumbs_up.gif

Avalon.. small question ahilissa: Gaia as greek mythology, Avalon Early English... *blinks*

I think it's a place where people cling to in hope for a better future... or at least they used to.

Highlander, relax, nobody will tell you what to believe in here. If you have to state your beliefs all the time and give others the warning glance it might look a wee bit odd. To me it seems that your beliefs don't stand on a very stable ground when you have to justify them... =/

AVALON
To me its the place where fairies, elves. unicorns, dragons and king arthur are in untill time come along for us to need them. It is like summerland a place for theotherworldly to rest and prpare for the day when humankind needs them.

OK, after you all tell what it means to you I don´t want to keep back my thoughts.
For me Avalon is (of course) a mystic place where live will be perfect, where King Arthur and all those heroes are awaiting for us until we need them....
But for me it is also a place I have been a long time before. For other people it is a normally old, overgrown apple garden. But in this place I experienced a time of perfect happiness and love.
But now this Avalon is concealed in the mists of my memories and, maybe, behind the mists of the future is a new Avalon awaiting for me.
Now for me this garden is a normally garden again, only in my memories and if I close my eyes I feel the remains of what that place once meant to me.

But I still keep searching for a new Avalon.....

Go ngnothái Dia dhuit!

COOL! smilie_osx.gif

Avalon exists in many places. It is where we seek it. Sometimes it is in ourselves, our loved ones, or that place in our memory we return to when escape is the only answer.

Everybodys ideas are great! Some of us how ever need to take a pill!
To me Avalon is a place where my family can all come together in peace and harmony. Never had that, think it would be really great.

heart.gif Avalon exists in the mountains where bald eagles play and the deer eat in the yard. The snow is deep and it frosts the trees. Steam rises from the river below and everything is quiet and peaceful. It is a place where grandkids can sled on the hill in front and run in to warm themselves by the fire and drink hot cocoa. biggrin.gif Ya, that would have to be it.

well.. I busied myself with a lot of religious beliefs and mythologies, that's why I'm asking...
I am a bit "stubborn" on terminology though wink.gif

but I would say (I'm not very experienced in this, and it probably belongs into the grove wink.gif ) that there are different forms of paganism, worhipping the mother goddess/earth etc is over here usually combined with the other regional gods.. calling her gaia would be scrambling things together in my mind... =o

In greek mythology gaia was only strongly worshipped through earlier periods, before Zeus took over the Pantheon (I love Greek Mythology.. it's got high story value wink.gif biggrin.gif )

If you can clear things up for my poor wee brain I'd be happy =)

When I think of Avalon I think of A Toyota Avalon automobile or "Avalon" the Christian rock group...
now if we are talking about "Avalon" with King Arthur and all that it's just a story to me. Not anything tangible. If it were I would imagine it as a beautiful place like the highlands of Scotland where the mist rolls in at all hours of the day and men and women wearing beautiful clothing of that period. Life would be difficult and rough but men would be knights in shining armour and women would be helpless.

Well so much for the fantasy. Most women I know don't want to be helpless. They want to be in control.

When I think of Avalon, I have the song that the McCalmans sang in my head.
It started...."My love is gone to Avalon, the winter here's too cold." I loved that song.My sister had a tape that it was on and played it constantly. walkman.gif

spielverderber! (spoilsport)... you're not much of a chevalier, eh?

Ahilissa: I thought of that concept but call me a nitpicking idiot but shouldn't people stick to one mythological background?
