Should people do both?  Is one better than the other?  Any successes?

First Post,

I believe we need to do both. We need to both listen to each other and have an open dialogue. Only following one I belive is too closed minded.

Also, I would like to point out, if we don't discuss, what are we listening for. wink.gif

I like the we have two ears and one mouth to do twice as much listening as talking. I will agree to that as long as you recognize the need to talk at some point.

there is always time to talk, just keep your mind and ears open as well biggrin.gif

There are many ways of seeking universal truth. Eastern philosophy is no more uniform than western. As a practicing Buddhist (SGI), I have great respect for all traditions. While my practice is not that of silence ( I Chant), I know of many that use silent meditation rather than verbal. This includes both Christians and non-Christians. I have taken part in interfaith groups in several parts of the USA and have learned that seekers of truth come in all forms. Is it a great surprise that universal truths tend to be universal.

In conjunction with the Jesus reference- One theory exists that Jesus went to the East and learned their philosophy during those years where Jesus kind of "disappears." It explains many of the similar sayings like "do unto others..." which are basically the same exact words in some Eastern religions.

MaryEllen, your comment is very good. I had heard this theory. The period in which Jesus was missing was at the height of the efforts of Mahayna Buddhist Missionaries. Cause and Effect are at the heart of Buddhist theory. Meaning no disrespect to the Christians in the group, but the principles in the New Testament are not original. This does not make them untrue, however.

Way to go Maisky biggrin.gif You know how I feel. I believe in both Eastern and Western beliefs. I'm kind of Universal? Oh, how blonde of me -- or should I say, "How gray of me?" angel.gif
