Well, chemk, you sure have asked a laded question! Great topic! Hope a lot of folks put in their opinions here!

I love Trad, Irish Trad in particular. There are so many groups that could be named. Some of my favorites include Danu, Altan, Teada, Beoga, Grada, FullSet. If you put me into a corner and I have to make a choice as my favorite, I would have to it it is Lunasa. They have incredible musicianship and are great to see in concert. Kevin Crawford and the boys know how to put on a great show!

Anybody else care to list their favorites?

Some of my favorites are Great Big Sea, Gaelic Storm, the High Kings and Enter The Haggis.

Celtic Thunder, The Celtic Tenors and Celtic Woman are also great if you want a mixture of Celtic and more modern music- everything from pop to rock to classical.

Good choices, Heartsong!

In the Scottish realm, give me the Old Blind Dogs, Jim Malcolm, Julie Fowlis, The Paul McKenna Band, Emily Smith, Dougie Maclean, among others.

Back to the Irish realms, I forgot to mention the great Cathie Ryan, Runa, Solas, and Karan Casey.

Egads, does it ever end!! So many groups, so little time to listen!

Who is the best?? What would be the criteria?? Hmmm...
Not really sure who is the best but here is who I like.

This is always a fun task to do but I just can't pick one like most of you as you will see!

I am a big fan of the Celtic Rock genre:
Great Big Sea
Runrig
Young Dubliners
Seven Nations
Enter the Haggis
Oysterband
Gaelic Storm

My Traditional Band Favorites:
Chieftains
The Dubliners
The Irish Rovers

Rock Bands with Celtic roots favs:
U2
Thin Lizzy
Van Morrison
The Cranberries
The Pogues
The Waterboys

Believe it or not this list was shortened.

It really depends on the mood I am in. I don't think I can positively put my finger on one best group, but the names mentioned previously I think are all in the running.

Gaelic Storm I think is one of my favorites as well as Enter the Haggis and Runrig. Rankin family, Leahy and of course Albannach!

I could go on all day! thumbs_up.gif note.gif

I have to agree with many of the above especially Lunasa and Solas.

Also would add Andy M. Stewart and Silly Wizard.

I've been looking at The Orthodox Celts on Youtube. Their English may be a little bit suspect, but they're a great band. Another band I discovered on Youtube is The Irish Bastards. They are a strange group, but they put plenty of energy into their performances. I'm sorry I didn't know until too late that they were playing at Temple Bar festival in Dublin a while back (they're from Germany) as I would love to have seen them live. They have a very characterful fiddler and a couple of shy, retiring dancers. wink.gif

Recently discovered a new group called Tonnta Ceoil. Wow, are they good! Seems like the Clare area has really been knocking it out with great, new Trad bands. You ought to check them out!

I may have mentioned Socks in the Frying Pan previously. They are coming to the USA (may already be here) and I hope to see them next year in Flagstaff, AZ.

Gotta love Trad!!!

I believe Socks in the Frying Pan are going to be at Milwaukee's Irish fest. I'll have to check them out this weekend.

You won't be sorry you did! These lads can flat out play!

Can't wait to hear your report on the happenings there. On my bucket list to get up there someday.

That was a great show. Glad you reommended them to me, otherwise I wouuld have probably just have shipped over them. They were one of the one of the hot buzzes around the festival. I've also been keeping an eye on CelKilt out of France-they seem to be an up and coming band- Good music and a sense of humor!
