Hey everyone. My name is Matthew and I live in Tennessee in the United States, but all of my ancestors are from Ireland and Scotland! I love the Irish and the Scottish! I am finally getting to go to Ireland and Scotland this summer and can't wait! I'm flying into Dublin and staying there for a few days, then driving to Belfast and visiting there for a couple days. Then crossing to Scotland and visiting for four or five days. Then going back to Belfast and back to Dublin, then driving around the bottom of the island and up the West side visiting Cork, Galway, etc. Finally driving back across the middle of the island to Dublin and flying back to the States from there. Any ways, my favorite Celtic music groups are Celtic Woman, Celtic Thunder, and The High Kings! But I have only seen The High Kings in concert. I hope to see the other two sometime soon! My top three favorite songs are Gold And Silver Days by Celtic Thunder, Raglan Road by The High Kings, and Carrickfergus by Celtic Woman! Thanks for listening to me!

Welcome Matt! Great trip you have planned there. I'm fair green-skinned!

Like englishmix, I also have English--and German--ancestry from my father (Jenkins is the last name) but I only claim my Scottish bits from my mother's side! Especially now with Scotland's impending fight for freedom from Sassanach rule wink.gif

We have some Irish from way back in the 1600's too, but it has been mostly the Scots. Probably explains my stubborn streak cool.gif

Welcome, Matt, from Kalamazoo! As a seasoned newbie, I am happy to say that you have found a great place for all things Celtic smile.gif Enjoy your time in Ireland and Scotland, I'm sure it will be a wonderful experience. I'll be there someday! Those are all great groups, all close favorites of my own. I've been listening to Karen Mal, Enter the Haggis, and Gaelic Storm a lot recently, perhaps you'd like them as well?

Oh, I could give you TONS of suggestions, but need to know what sub-genre you prefer. It sounds like trad (traditional)?? There are so many sub-genres in Celtic music that you can never get tired of it!

Thank you! Alright! I'll definitely check them out!

Ummmmm... I guess really any kind! Haha. Other than them I've only heard Enya and various instrumental songs. And the Wolfe Tones, but I don't know if they classify as Gaelic? Haha.

Thank you! Yeah Tennessee! Haha. I hope it will be!

Okay, here we go:

For pipes/drums: Albannach, MacTalla Mor, Clannad, Saor Patrol, Clann An Drumma.

For more rock type pipes/drums: Red Hot Chilli Pipers are amazing, as are Wicked Tinkers. Runrig, Brother, Rathkeltair and Stramash are fantastic too.

For a more straight rock type (sing along kind): Enter the Haggis, Great Big Sea, Rise, Ceann, Irish Stew of Sindidun, Barley Juice, Gaelic Storm, Ceilidhdonia, Glengarry Bhoys.

For Trad: The Elders, The Chieftains, Bonnie Rideout, The High Kings, James Galway, The Corries.

For more emphasis on vocals/guitar, I absolutely adore Jim Malcolm and Charlie Zahm (amazing tenor). Douglas McLean, Steve McDonald, Danny Ellis, Mickey Coleman, Dala.

For a more Irish type (even though many of these artists are US or Canada based): Lisa Kelly, Burning Bridget Cleary, The Gothard Sisters, Archie Fischer, Wild Thyme, Deirdre Shannon, The Sandcarvers.

For flat-out fun: Captain Tractor, Tartan Terrors, Ceann, Ed Miller.

Paddy Punk: Flatfoot 56, Mr. Irish Bastard, Lexington Field, The Mahones, Dropkick Murphys, The Tossers, The Bloody Irish Boys, Amadán (old school: The Pogues and The Skids)

===================================================
WHEW! Okay, that's just half a ton. Let me know if you want more. There are even MORE sub-genres!

Man, I love Celtic music! walkman.gif

Hahaha, thank you for all of the suggestions! I'm definitely going to check them out! Although it may take me a while! Haha. Oh yeah, I forgot about Dougie and the Corries! I love Home by Dougie MacLean and Loch Lomond by the Corries! I played Loch Lomond on tuba for band in high school! This year I'm playing a piece called "The Highland Games". I like "The Foggy Dew" with Sinead O"Connor and The Chieftains. One of my personal favorites by her is "Oro Se Beatha Bhaile" (I think that's how it's spelled). And as far as Charlie Zahm, well I agree, he's just amazing! Haha.

Hey Matthew, I'm just checking up on you. Have you figured out what is great about Tenn? How is the planning going for your trip? I didn't know you played the tuba - ever have a chance to try bagpipes?

God Bless, Sully
