Why does the price of gas go up so quickly and go back down so slowly. $3.89 per gal in my town on 3/1/12.

Our socialists here in the US are doing everything in their power to make sure we pay as much as you folks do in Europe.

At the retail level it is because the retailer will either be working at lower profit margins or even lose money as they keep having to buy the product at higher and higher prices while at the same time the customer is resisting paying more. So when prices drop the retailer tries to recoup their profits lost on the rise, and they also have the problem of getting rid of the inventory they paid more for than current market price.

Thanks, that makes sense. I am sorry for Jermy and try to remember we pay less than so many countries. The problem is I can remember the Plymouth Fury I drove in the early 60's. I could pull into the station on fumes and fill my 26 gal tank for less than $10!
