Apple's software gurus made a change in how iTunes for Windows handles MP3s and now on older AMD processors (and I believe some Intel Pentium and Celeron processors too) the iTunes program will not playback MP3 files or MP3 streams properly.
As best I can tell Apple is aware of this and supposedly working on a fix (but Apple has never impressed me with their support or keeping their customer base advised on problems/fixes).
