I was flicking through my SKY+ listings last night and came across a new channel number listed as BBC ALBA.

Upon selecting it the information was that it would begin transmission on the 19th September 2008.

It's currently SKY Channel 169 and carries BBC Radio Scotland gaelic programs during the day. The screen listing calls it "ALBA An Diugh"

Just a heads up for anyone who can get UK SKY TV biggrin.gif

Which actually is not a lot of Gaels in outlying areas, Highlands and Islands - and um, where do Gaels live...?

I wish this was coming on Freeview, as it's going to make a difference, commercially, how many people use it initially, if it is to continue and expand.

I'm also very curious about what sort of programming it will have. It needs 'hooks', like popular music and soaps etc. So far, from what I've heard, it seems as if it's going more for 'heritage', which is a limited appeal, and will not pull in the viewers.

It needs total rubbish on it, like on normal TV - Big Brother, celeb interviews, crime series, cookery, gardens, house makeovers etc, as well as (definitely) the odd Free Church Service and a lot of Blas, Fisean, the Mod etc; so that Gaelic is seen as 'normal', not 'a specialist, intellectual, endangered language'.

BBC Alba, the new Gaelic television channel launching next month, is on the hunt for a long-running soap as part of its commitment to broadcasting original drama...

Another source says:
QUOTE
BBC Alba will initially be available, to Scottish viewers with cable and satellite, seven hours a day from next month. It will switch to BBC Freeview in 2010. The 20m to finance the project is coming jointly from the licence fee and the publicly-funded Gaelic Media Service, MG Alba.

You can catch the evening news on the net: http://www.bbc.co.uk/scotland/player/bb_rm_ms_44534818

I don't know if it's available outside of the UK though.

And an article in The Herald about the new channel http://www.sundayherald.com/oped/opinion/d...2453793.0.0.php
