One of my mushing friends and I went into partnership to buy a used Sacco cart for off=season. It's designed to accommodate only one or two dogs, but it has a unique steering system that allows you steer the dog, instead of the vehicle.

New they cost about $1300.00 or so (imported from Norway, I believe). We got ours used for $350.00 plus the cost of 4 new BMX bicycle tires. My friend has used it with a pair of basset hounds, so just about any medium to large sized dog can draw the Sacco cart along. The picture below shows Lynn with a pair of her older sprint leaders, Puma and Ice. Since Puma and Ice have done this before, they got to take the first run on it.

I think a pair of border collies could make this thing FLY!!!

Here is a view of it without the driver.

Swanny, is that you in the pics?! I would LOVE Border collies but my vet told me unless I had lots of room and had them working, they could be very destructive. I so love those dogs though!

pretty cool toy, though! Thanks for sharing!

No, that's not me in the pic. I'm not nearly that easy to look at. That is Lynn Orbison in the picture. Lynn is a limited class sprint musher who runs a six dog team of all white rescued dogs, and also runs a four dog team of "geriatrics" in the AARP races. She does a lot of rescue work and I help her in that endeavor with training and anything else that I can given my odd work schedule. Currently she and I are co-fostering Kia, the husky/malamute mix I wrote of in another post. Kia lives with my team while I'm home from work, and with Lynn's team when I'm gone.

Your vet is probably right, BCs are very high drive, high energy dogs that really need a job to do in order to be happy and content. They are awesome in herding trials, agility, dog mushing and other high energy dog sports but that same intensity and energy level can get them into trouble in pet-dog homes. Ray Coppinger and some other New England mushers have run border collies on sled dog racing teams with a great deal of success, and even though he's been out of racing for many years Dr. Coppinger still raves about a B.C. he had running lead "back in the day".

A Sacco cart, sulky or other wheeled rig would be a GREAT dog toy for a home with border collies.

Love your new toy! It looks like a blast and what a way to train off season.
