QUOTE (ballydun @ 18-Apr-2007, 11:39 AM)
I do pray that Cho's family will be able to heal and not be persecuted by our society.

I was listening to a conversation earlier where someone said his family should pay for what he did. I do not agree with that at all, but there are so many people who feel like that. I cant even imagine what his family must feel like, and I feel sorry for them. Society is a difficult place to live in sometimes.

The parents were hospitlaized due to the shock. There were reports they attempted suicide but those were false.

His parents are already paying for what their son did. Their son is dead and they have suffered enough. They are still suffering and need our prayers. As a parent, I know how hard it would be if a child of mine did something awful like this. Why? What did I do? Didn't my son know how much we love and care for him? What did I do wrong? I should have seen his troubled spirit and been able to help him so this awful day would have never come. So many questions with no answers. This child's family did no wrong. This young man chose to follow Satan as some do. No matter how much we love our children and teach them, they have their free agency to follow the path of the Lord or the path of Satan. All we can do is love our children, teach them, and pray for them. The path they chose to follow is their choice though. The family of this boy needs our love and prayers not hate. All the families need our prayers and our love. I think this family needs more. Just think! If this was your child that went on this killing spree and killed himself, how would you feel.
I remember about a year ago, when that man went in a shot up the Amish school killing and wounding many. The Amish people showed us the way that day. They grieved for their loved ones that were killed and hurt. But in their sorrows they went to the family of the man who did the killing and comforted and helped them.
Can we do any less for this boy's family? I know if Jesus were here He would reach out and care for the family left behind. Their son is dead and this family must live with the awful things he did. They don't need persecution, they have enough. They need our help and our prayers so they can heal from this awful tragedy. In helping the family left behind and helping one another we can all receive peace and comfort and perhaps make a new day and better day for all our children and us.

I would like to ask something with all due respect. This young man was severely mentally ill. That means all bets are off about the issue of clear and rational choice. Unclear, irrational choice of the kind that marks his disorder is something most of us can't even contemplate, much less make judgements on. The extent of derangement in his mental state probably has yet to be fully assessed; but unless you seriously mean to claim that the mentally ill are possessed or choose to be guided by Satan, which would roll back progress a couple hundred years, and increase their burden and the burden of those who are associated with them and care for them, immeasurably, I think it might be better to refrain, please, from thinking about this incident in those terms.

In addition to expressing our grief and support for this traumatized learning community at VT, I think we need to reflect on the weaknesses in the system that made this more likely to happen. Some of my thoughts are with the English teacher who knew in her gut that this kid was heading for something bad, just by looking at his writing, and whose hands were tied so that she couldn't do much of anything about it other than report it, knowing that her fears would go nowhere. I can only imagine her grief, rage and frustration today.

The mentally ill are not of Satan and the Lord will help them. But the killing he did is not because of his sickness. Killing in the manner he did is an act of Satan. This boy has done an evil thing. He is a a child of God and Father has not forgotten him. He has gone Home where the Lord will care for him and judge him. It is not our place to judge. Only Heavenly Father knows what is deep within this boy's heart. Satan was there that day. If the boy could have gotten help when he first cried out for help, he may have heard the Holy Spirit's voice instead of Satan's.
Problem is many knew this was a troubled boy and laws and government tied their hands so tight they couldn't reach out and help him. So his inner light went down deep inside and the darkness was aloud to come in. He and his family need our love and prayers and he needs our forgiveness.
Somehow we need to change the rules and the laws so people like this boy can be taken away from where they might do harm to a place where they can get help. He let out a mighty cry and people heard but laws tied their hands so he slipped away into the darkness of Satan's lies.

QUOTE (Rebecca Ann @ 19-Apr-2007, 09:27 PM)
The mentally ill are not of Satan and the Lord will help them.

So -- he was mentally ill, and therefore the Lord should have helped him, but obviously the Lord did not help him, not to mention the rest of us not helping him, and so what he did, particularly in the manner in which he did it, because the Lord did not help him, was not because he was mentally ill but because he was Satan's tool. Is that it?

Rebecca Anne, this is a thread that has been made to offer our thoughts and share our shock and sorrow over this, so I won't take it further than to say it's a circular and unsupportable way of thinking. The boy was deeply ill and his horrific acts came totally out of that fact. But you nevertheless have the best intentions in holding and using that logic, and your deepest desire is comfort, healing and understanding. And that I respect completely, and we are in total agreement that that is what we need.

Stoirmeil
Forgive me please if I have upset you. We are all children of our Heavenly Father. He loves and cares for us always. The Lord never forsakes us. But often times we may forsake Him and go astray. Have you ever watched the tv show TOUCHED BY AN ANGEL? The angels are always there but we must be willing to reach out and accept. We are given the right to chose and our choices are not always right.
Cho did cry out for help and people heard and could have helped. Often the Lord puts us to be the helpers of a lost soul. There was an epasode on Touched by an angel not to long ago about a man who was losing himself to Gregroy and was dying. He had done something wrong as a young boy and it ate away at him until he lost himself and the devil entered in making him bitter. He felt worthless and tried to kill himself many times and sunk deeper into dispear with each attempt until much of what he was left leaving only hate and anger behind. The angels saw within him the lost spirit of the little boy of long ago and called to him. But only the boy's childhood friend was able to bring back the small light inside and help the boy to come out and send the devil away, giving the man a chance to heal. I think Cho and others like him is like this man, lost and alone crying out for help. Some heard the cries but felt unable to help because laws tied their hands. It was man and society and laws that failed him not the Lord. He needed to be in a hospital where he could get help.
