I read about this, but didn't see what's in the food that's making the animals sick.

Thank goodness the brands we fed our dogs and our cat are not on the list.

The recall is only for "wet" (canned or pouched) foods, specifically the "cuts and gravy" style food produced by Menu Foods. In a feeding trial it was reported that 1 in six dogs fed this stuff died. That's a huge mortality rate and if holds up would mean this affected pet food is more toxic than most poisons.

They still aren't certain what ingredient is causing the issue. Apparently the problem coincided with a change in vendors providing wheat gluten, but scientists are also studying other ingredients as well, looking for heavy metals such as camium or lead, fungal toxins, and Aflotoxin.

Hey Swanny! Thanks for coming to the rescue of all us animal lovers with your knowledge. The last I heard it was due to rat poisioning in the food. How it got in there, no one knows. Perhaps you could enlighten us all the more...if you should know more.

A couple months ago I changed my dog food to Hills Science Diet. What a HUGE difference that has made in my dogs in more ways than one. However, anyone can put in rat poisioning in any food at anytime if they are sick enough and inclined to outsmart whoever works at these food products..albeit human or animal. Makes me sick to think of all the animals having to be euthanized due to renal failure as a result of all this. Really makes me heart sick to the core. sad.gif

The foods that are being recalled are foods that I have used in the past...eep!

Thus far, they've found the offending pet foods to be contaminated with aminopterin. Aminopterin is used to treat some cancers in the United States, but is not approved for use as a rodenticide because it is known to cause birth defects in humans.

However, it used in several other countries, including China. The wheat gluten, which is the suspect ingredient in this case, was imported from China.

So, though it is speculative, it is quite possible that the aminopterin was used at a facility in any stage of the gluten production process up until the finished product was received in Canadian or U.S. dog food production plants.

My dad told me that if you having a hard time finding Ol' Roy dry dog food it is because WalMart pulled it off the shelves. They found a problem with the food and pulled it. It is slowly being put back onto the shelves. He used to feed exclusively Ol' Roy to his dogs. He did not tell me what he is using now.
