A few days ago Two Rivers Dog Mushers Association president Scott Chesney sent me an email asking if I'd be willing to assist a production crew working on a Weather Channel documentary on the history of the 1925 Nome Serum Run. They needed someone with big freight dogs to depict the historical freight dogs used to relay the diptheria serum to Nome back in '25.

Through a series of Emails with the crew from Towers Productions responsible for the documentary, it is now pretty certain that my little team of big dogs are going to depict the team of "Wild Bill" Shannon, the first musher in the Nome relay, and the one who had the most trouble on that brutal trail.

Since this combines aspects of the two activities I most enjoy in life, dog mushing and historical reenactment, I am really excited about this. You can bet that when it airs I'll be sure to let you know to tune in and watch the Star Dancer Historical Freight Dogs at work.

That's fantastic. I remember reading about that event with the diphtheria serum when I was just a kid -- I thought it was real hero stuff, very thrilling. Are Daisy and her son going to be part of the cast?

The latest is the production crew is now in Alaska, filming interviews and gathering background info. The Norman Run Serum Run '25 leaves tomorrow and the crew will accompany them at least as far as Old Minto. On Sunday they will interviewing Gay Salisbury, the author of The Cruelest Miles. Monday and Tuesday morning they will be chasing down props for the historical segments, which we will be shooting pretty much all day Wednesday.

We have just enough authentic dogs to field two teams for the shooting. My friend Mike Green is also working on this project and between his dogs and a couple borrowed from Jan DiNapoli we can put together a team that looks very, very similar to the Siberian Husky team used by Leonhard Seppala in his segment of the original run, across the sea ice of Norton Sound.

Another friend, a Quitch'n Athabascan who is very traditional and a highly conditioned athlete will depict the Native Alaskan dog drivers, who were noted for their ability to run beside the sled, keeping pace with their teams.

I will be borrowing a lead dog from Tammi Rego who is almost a spittin' image of my darling Daisy, so we will have a team with matched leaders which should photograph very nicely.

We've pretty much finalized the shooting schedule and arranged for dogs and gear, so at this point about all we have left to do is wait until Wednesday, and then go to work.
