These same rules, modified somewhat, were passed onto my children but I always insisted on good manners at the table. I know if I ever have Grandkids the rules will be even further modified and passed on. Times change I know but I am still of the belief that when you sit down to eat you do so with proper manners.

That great but how did you keep the two year old in check?

I have seen many children at the table without any manners. It is a shame that something so simple to teach has fallen by the wayside. I insist that my children act like civilized beings at the table.

It is difficult in these times to get children to understand the importance of manners. My sons try to tell me that they just want to be like their friends. Well, I much prefer to have them having manners over impressing friends.

Actually I don't remember having that much trouble with either of the girls at the table when they were young. Their grandad was responsible for them being well behaved at the table as both the girls would do anything to please Grandad and he explained to them that the dinner table was not for playing and if they didn't behave at the table he would know and he wouldn't be pleased. That seemed to be enough for both of them. All my wife and I had to do was tell them we would tell Grandad that they were acting like little animals and that squared them away. Also a few times they got a a swat on the backside.
