The red clay we have down here is sumthin'! Dig a hole in it to plant a flower and doggone if the clay doesn't hold the water like a bowl and drown the poor plant. I swear my dad had that happen when he made a rock garden. Thank the good Lord we have sandier soil where we live now that is actually till-able. Got a veggie garden going this year!

Gwen, have fun in the northwest. It's getting some good press, with the popular Twilight movie being set there.

QUOTE (susieq76 @ 02-Jun-2009, 01:39 PM)
I have a prayer request. I haven't been on in a long time! Things have been hectic and stressful beyond imagination and it has been really dark for me. I have been suffering from depression for a long, long time. However, the demands of raising two small children who are 13 months apart and handling a husband who is difficult a lot of the time has been more than I can handle...

Oh my... your post brought back some painful, very dark memories for me. I struggled with mild depression for several years but the birth of my second child triggered a full-blown case that led to the darkest two years of my life. My faith was shaky too, my dear, and faith was in the end the only thing I found myself hanging on to in the deepest end of the pit.

But long story short, it was Jesus Christ who responded to my angry wounded words of 'where are You when I need You'. He was there, He kept his promise to never leave, and led me out of the pit in the most wonderful, odd way! That's a tale for another day.

Let me tell you a truth you need to hear: you are strong and you are a great mother. You can do this. I felt such a searing doubt as to my ability to be a good mom, but my doubts were self-inflicted and a lie. We are stronger than we know, and in your case two children so close in age are going to be the one thing that will prove your strength in the long run. God really doesn't give us anything beyond our capabilities and will give us strength and guidance and courage if we seek. And listen! And take action. Trust Him.

You listen to me: you can do this. I know it. Keep in touch. I'll try to come here more often and look for your posts.

Hello Emmalou, a new friend, and all you old friends Gwenlee and MDF... no no, Gwen, I didn't mean old like OLD I meant like long-time. wink.gif

I don't get to visit here much any more and I sure miss it. I regret being out of touch with everyone and think of you often. This is one of the best discussion boards I've ever been a member of!

Hey WallaceGal, my son lives in northeast Pennsylvania, in Berwick - and works in nearby Nescopek. He loves living there, and we've sure enjoyed our visits. It's so danged hot down here in Georgia and he knows it, and will call to gloat: "heeeyyy, it's only 78* here how hot is it THERE" the little rascal.

LOL!

QUOTE (Amergin @ 03-Apr-2009, 11:00 PM)
The longer I live in Christ, the more I believe in the organic nature of our relationship with Him. It becomes more and more a part of our lives, naturally and organically, so that those around us can perceive a difference in our lives. I think that is what you are experiencing.
It can be helpful to have an organized way of explaining the gospel when somebody does ask because it makes it easier to share. But if it becomes a sales technique, then we come across as forcing the gospel on people, even if we don't intend to.
We are intrinsically and essentially related to, imbued with, and transcendent in Christ. The more we live that life in front of others, the more they want to know why we are different. They perceive that there's something inside us that they don't have.

Oh, I didn't mean I befriend people in order to witness to them - I meant when I make friends, that's when the opportunity to witness arises. I'd never set out to befriend someone just so I could talk about Jesus, that does seem artificial.

My two children are grown and married now, the son is 26 & married for a couple of years (he and his wife are in their last year or so of college so no immediate plans to start a family) and daughter has been married almost 2 years (says they want a family some day). I suspect daughter will be the first to have children but never can tell!

It would be so nice to have grandchildren, and if I ever do I'll insist on being called Granny! LOVE that. And I already have reading glasses perched on the end of my nose so I look it too.

O.K. Ladies. Out of all the popular tv shows on now, which character is the closest to your husband (past or present) and why?

As for my husband I would have to say Gibbs, on NCIS series. Just his mannerism, the expressions on his face and the lack of carrying on a conversation is my husband down to a tee. cool.gif

Flora

We are avid "24" fans, and I kinda had a crush on Bill Buchanan 'cause he reminds me of my husband: the grey hair, height and build, those nice eyes. He was calm and cool, a voice of reason (like my husband can calm me down when I go ballistic) And Bill had such a great voice, I loved to hear him talk.

But then he got killed off the other week! crybaby.gif I nearly started crying!

Good thing hubby is still healthy and here.

As one old fart to another; you're only as old as you think you are!

"Age is just a number"!

I feel like 35, but wake up some mornings with my knees grumbling at me "nooo, you're not 35 any more kiddo"... rolleyes.gif But even with some health issues blooming in these 50+ years I still enjoy each day and strive to make the best of them all. Since we moved to the country I scowl less, grumble less and feel less tension so I suspect that's going to help me live longer.

The suburbs can wear ya down! Glad we got out.

Who looks forward to the day when she has grandchildren and they call her "Granny"!!

I've become acutely aware lately of how negatively the Christian faith is perceived by a LOT of people. You know this is not a new development, but even in the press Christianity is deliberately put down and ridiculed, dismissed as fanaticism.

Society increasingly turning against Christianity is to be expected. But personally, I'm hearing more friends and acquaintances expressing firm rejection of Jesus Christ as the son of God and Savior of mankind. They tell me Christianity is too restricted and exclusive, and that we need to be tolerant of all faiths and belief systems... some folks even go so far as to say all roads lead to the same God! They obviously do not know what these roads actually believe, and that that assertion cannot be true.

The only real way I've ever been able to 'witness' to someone is when I befriend them and they eventually ask why I'm so generally optimistic about life and the future particularly in these troubling times of job layoffs and recession. Then I can share with them the hope Christians have in the future because of our belief in Christ - plus, my personal experience with what He's done in my life is pretty strong evidence too! thumbs_up.gif

What about y'all? How have you been able to share Jesus with people?

Isn't it nice that springtime is slowly making an appearance. I know my allergies are going to get to me soon but it's almost tolerable when I get to see the daffydils and crocus blooming.

Hi y'all, I've missed visiting here and reading how everyone is doing. Someday I hope to get a 36 hour day but until then it's a challenge to find time to do everything I want/need/hope to do! laugh.gif

In my experience, a good person is:

One who is true to themselves
Who shows respect for all living things
Kind to mankind and animals
Ready to extend a hand of friendship or aid to those who come alongside on the path of life

I breed Boston Terriers and raise mules... I need coffee 2x a day or will walk into walls.

Aw, I wish I had a mule! Grandpa Gore had one as long as he was working his farm, and they were always the sweetest things to be so big (I was only 9 yr.s old so they looked really tall!) About two years ago we finally moved to the country and now have two wonderful old retired show horses so I'm enjoying our equine days providing a good retirement home for Dee and Spirit.

Ditto the java too. It takes two cups for me to make a cohesive sentence in the morning, three cups if I have to step out of the house and be actually civil to my fellow human beings.

Welcome!

I actually used the one about Hebrews & the guy is supposed to make coffee 'cause its Biblical! My sweet hubby really does make coffee for us every morning anyway, and one day I told him that's the way it ought to be because the Bible says so.

He really laughed at that one!

laugh.gif Camac, you are a hoot!

It really is a lot easier to laugh at ourselves & make jokes at our own expense. What's the saying, 'he who can laugh at himself shall never cease to be amused'. True. I'm all the time telling stuff on myself and sometimes people say 'and you can laugh about that??' but I'm thinking hey, life's too short. And I'm one of those who can trip while walking down a hallway that has a hardwood floor.

When I was a kid I was a bit insecure and shy, and that made me somehow afraid of looking foolish. As I got older I began to take life a little less seriously and I realized laughter is indeed good medicine... my favorite inspirations are those who can laugh easily at both themselves and the sheer absurdity of life.

These days I'm sorta watching my health go downhill, after a life of no problems except nearsightedness. When I turned 50, I found out I had high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Ohhh-kay, so I take meds for those and keep it under control. Well right before Christmas I found out I now have diabetes! censored.gif Can't have any of my favorite foods, and now have to intentionally draw blood twice a day! censored.gif censored.gif After a couple of weeks of borderline depression, thank goodness my sense of humor returned. If I skint my knuckle working in the barn, or had a brief nosebleed from sinus troubles, I'd loooook at the redness and think 'wonder if I could take a blood glucose reading from that and skip pricking my finger tonight??'

Good day, all!

It's nice to pop back in for a visit today. We have cold temps (18*) in western Georgia but its a beautiful blue-sky day. Mid-week is a good time for me with several days in a row to work in the studio... almost finished with an Arizona landscape but next must complete a commission so working on fun things will have to wait awhile.

How are the wedding plans coming, Gwen? May will be here before you know it.

Is St. Johns wort supposed to affect energy levels?? I'd not heard that... I've taken it for years to help me with mood swings (brought on by menopause plus headstrong teenagers rolleyes.gif )

Just got back from the Dr. office, and I'd only lost 3 pounds since the last visit a couple of weeks ago. I was very disappointed, 'cause I don't eat much now and don't know how I'm going to eat less! sad.gif Doc thought the weight loss was fine, but I have a goal of losing 30 pounds or more; that's not going to be easy. Or realistic, probably.
Doc was very pleased with my numbers and that my blood pressure was lower too... they're going to let me know about the cholesterol numbers tomorrow which he says he expects to be good. He says I'm doing very well, and will not have to prick my finger twice a day for much longer. I do hate poking my finger twice a day.

If you're really trying to cut down on sugar, its easy enough to stop adding it to food and such, but sugar is added to so many foods we buy that it takes some serious label-reading to find the hidden sugars. You also have to watch carb intake 'cause the body processes carbs like it does sugar to turn it into energy. So white bread, potatoes, and pasta need to be eliminated or reduced a lot too! That's what I miss so much, spaghetti and pasta alfredo... frusty.gif

We watched Tropic Thunder the other night on PPV, we really like Robert Downey Jr. and enjoyed him in this one - he stole the show - but overall the movie was too violent for me. And Jack Black was wasted in his role; he's such a hoot and always makes me laugh (School of Rock!) but this time he didn't have much of a role to work with.

Thanks, I appreciate that! She's pretty scared about it because the surgery is complex, breaking this toe bone and that bone there & reattaching this and that, and she'll be off her feet for many weeks. I teased her by saying she ought to get them to just amputate the offending toes and be done with it.

eek.gif The look on her face was priceless!! At least I got her to laugh about it.

Hey Padraig,

We saw on the news where Cleveland is really having some tough weather; our daughter-in-law attend the Cleveland Institute of Music there so we keep an eye on the state these days. Hope you're not getting too snow-covered. It's cold down here in Georgia, in the 20's today, but it ain't nuthin compared to what you Northerners are dealing with.

Rose, did you watch American Idol last night? I got a kick out of it being set in Phoenix! Got to see those saguaro cactus again; I'm beginning to collect saguaro stuff now, I picked up a carved stone cactus at a friend's yard sale last fall and this week at an Austell antique store I bought a small cactus & a napping little guy that went with it. Cliche I know, but fun none the less. Anyway, on Idol they had that guy Ryan standing at the edge of the Grand Canyon... I told Reid how strange it was to try to talk standing there, how your voice seems to just vanish instantly. When we visited, I remember being reduced to whispers at first out of sheer shock at the magnificence of the place.

I've just gotten home from a visit to the Doctor's office for a check-up on how my meds & diet are getting my diabetes under control. The doc was pleased with my blood sugar numbers which have come down, and my blood pressure was lower too... but I'd only lost 3 more pounds since the last visit and I had hoped to have lost 10 or more. I don't eat much now, and am thinking 'good heavens, what can I cut out now??'

sad.gif But its good to know the diet and meds have worked to get me closer to normal.

Well now Harlot, what does age have to do with it? I am sure he would enjoy a good home-cooked meal. rolleyes.gif

As the New Year approaches I am cleaning out things that were not used in 2008. I am seriously considering getting rid of my high heel shoes. In Florida we are usually casual, but still I hesitate. How about it girls? Do you still use your high heels? Are we talking 4 to 6 inches heels? And what about those horrid things (that I am sure were invented by a man) - Panty hose? Give me your thoughts on the subject.

Flora

Honey, I ditched my high heels years ago. I despised them anyway but after seeing what years of wearing high-heeled, pointy toe shoes did to my poor 73-yr. old mama's feet I said nooo, that's not going to happen to me.
She has a bunions and hammer-toe, and her feet are literally deformed now to the point that surgery is going to be necessary when she can't put up with the pain any more. And the podiatrist says heels and pointy toe shoes are to blame.

rolleyes.gif I confess I don't mind pantyhose, cause those with the control top help control my tummy.

Hi all,

Here it is, a month after my diagnosis and I'm happy to report that eventually the constant hunger does subside. rolleyes.gif I don't own weight scales so I don't know if I've lost more weight, but hubby says he can see the loss so next week when I go back to the doc's I'll hopefully have good news.

To my great relief, my numbers have finally come down with taking two Metformins a day. In the past three days, the morning numbers before breakfast were under 115 and the night numbers after dinner were under 130 (well last night's were 168 after a dinner at Cracker Barrel! Shame on me.) Hopefully this means my system is adjusting and managing the blood glucose better.
And one thing that helped those numbers get low too was spending a lot of time in my 'happy place' - the studio. Just cleaning the studio, adding books to the bookshelf, and working on two new drawings really calmed me inside... I think the lack of stress had a lot to do with the numbers. 'Cause one night when my numbers were over 200 I'd had a busy day at work and angry words with my dad that afternoon!

But I still don't have much energy, and feel so wasted after work on the two days a week I'm a church secretary. Don't know what to do about that, or if anything will make a difference. Dad, who is diabetic too, says that's just par for the course. We'll see.
