C.R. I have been reading this thread with interest about your planned visit to these shores. Whilst the AA route finder is indeed a valuable aide,if you have the time, you really MUST get off the main roads and head onto some of the "B" roads to see the true scenery of the country.Especially as your good man will be doing the driving. A couple of examples which spring to mind are:
B8019 just North/West of Pitlochry (on the Edinburgh/Inverness Road),which takes you alongside Loch Tummel. There is a viewpoint called "The Queens View" just at the start of the Loch which is pretty impressive.Quite a popular tourist stop but still worth the effort.
Whilst this next road may be a bit "off route" it is also well worth attempting. It is the single track road that runs from north of Kishorn through Applecross Forest to the west and on to the village of Applecross on the West Coast of the peninsula. Whilst this road is not for the faint hearted, the views on a clear day are great. I think there is a link on the "undiscoveredscotland" site about this road.......?
There are so many smaller roads which (time permitting) are very rewarding.
I am sure Cat will be able to offer lots of others....
