Hello and welcome to Wales!

I am your "host", if you will - here to help you if I can, gain knowledge from you and have a great time along with you! I hope that you will come here often, and will be able to see why Wales is such a beloved country!

A bit about me - I am a researcher in NC - I track people down on the internet for a university in my area, so they can get money out of them. I am 28 and have a beautiful daughter, as well. In my spare time I love to read, crochet, do puzzles and learn about new things! I am very excited to have been picked as mod for Wales, as I have an uncle from Wales and have been enthralled with this gorgeous country for quite some time now!

Jump right in, and if you need anything, please PM me!

Susanna (susieq76)

Thanks for all the well wishes, guys! I bought a "learn welsh" CD/book combo this weekend at Barnes and Noble and am waiting for it to come in. I will also be checking out lots of books on the subject to better familiarize myself with this wonderful country! See you in the forums!

Congratulations, susieQ! Good to have you as Moderator here in Wales. Do you know if Welch is a Welsh name! Humm, maybe I need to take this up to the genealogy department! unsure.gif

LOL! We can check, but I believe that the standing joke is that Jones is the most common Welsh name!

Hi, susieq76, I'm new. I posted in the self introduction section too. As another Welsh learner, I'm interested in how other learners are doing. Are you using the CD/book you bought? How are you getting along?

Hey again, gwen!

I wish I were. At the moment I have been up to my eyeballs in applying to colleges and filling out grants, but it is never far from my thoughts. I have been trying to keep up by listening to the BBC files, which are fabulous.

It has been very easy for me to pick up Welsh. Much more so than when I tried to learn Gaelic. I do tend to learn languages easily, but Gaelic did me in!

Anyway, glad to have you here. Have you tried any tapes or books yourself that you found helpful?

Hi, Susanna,

I forgot to "enable email notification of replies" for this section, so it took me a while to get back to you.

As I'm learning Welsh alone, I bought both hits and misses. The best material for me turned out to be free from BBC Learn Welsh. I've been going through "Lloyds" - lessons for beginners. There are 81 weeks' lessons, and I'm half way through. I'm taking a break now and using Welsh in 3 Months with cassette tapes. I bought this book when I first started learning a year and a half ago. It was too grammar oriented and frightening at that time! It's been gathering dust, but now I find it useful. I plan to go over it quickly and get back to Lloyds.

I read easy Welsh books and magazines too. This takes time but is indeed helpful in learning Welsh and any languages, I'm sure. I enjoy listening to Welsh music CDs also. Do you have any favorites?

How nice you have a gift for languages! I can never say Welsh is easy to pick up! I sometimes wonder if it was made hard on purpose for estroniaid (foreigners) to learn. wink.gif

I hope you'll find time for learning Welsh.

After writing this long post, I realise now I should have posted it in the Welsh language section.

Lol! No, it is perfectly fine here, actually! The language section will probably be for speaking in Welsh and translations, as well as for teaching Welsh.

I would imagine it is very different from Japanese? Gaelic was like that for me. I could find no reference point for how to begin learning it. But I probably could have done better had I applied myself.
