| Recently I received an e-mail requesting the lyrics to a Gaelic song called Na Hu O Ho, and I thought that I would psot them here for everyone to enjoy! Does anyone else have a request? I can't guarantee taht I'll be able to find them, but I'll do my best! Slàn, Allen Here are the lyrics you requested! It is one of the most beautiful Gaelic songs you will ever hear in my humble opinion! You may also find this song with the title "Nach Truagh Leat mi 's tu'n Eirinn." Please note that the entire chorus (Na hu o ho etc) is all nonsense sylallables that mean nothing except for the last sentence, Nach truagh leat mi 's tu'n Eirinn, which means soemthing like "Aren't I pitiful with you in Ireland" Scottish Gaelic Version: Na hù o hò Na hù o hì na hù o hò Hù o-o ù o èile Na hù o hì na hù o hò Nach truagh leat mi 's tu'n Eirinn. 'S ann their iad rium on chaidh thu null Gum bi thu tric aig Feilltean 'S gum bi thu cuspaireachd le mùirn Ri Màili ruadh an Eirinn. Ged sheòladh tu air feadh a chuain 'S ged ruigeadh tu an Eiphit Cha threiginn thu air sgàth do chliù 'S cha toirinn gèill do bhreugan. English Translation: What people tell me since you went over is that you frequently attend festivals and that you happily pursue red-haired May in Ireland. Even if you were to sail across oceans and though you would reach Egypt I would not desert you because of your reputation and I would not submit to lies (about you). Oh if only I had slender wings I would travel across the hills and I would sing my love song to the one who resides in Ireland. Oh please return, my love, to Cnoc-an-Duin where we were once young and carefree where we were happy, full of music and content like the thrushes in the forest. |

| Dear 'WizardofOwls" Thank you SO MUCH for the Gaelic lyrics and English translation of Na Hu O Ho. I obtained the CD Celtic Christmas years ago when I wanted to branch out from 'traditional' Christmas Tunes. It has always been a favorite and became especially important to me when my husband deployed to Iraq Fall, 2005. For an entire year I listed to this album daily on my commute to work and this song in particular, over and over. It was calming, centering, and over time I was able to sing most of it. I've always wanted the lyrics to sing it completely and correctly and a translation to know what I was singing. While certainly NOT a Christmas tune, I see I was, in a strange way, singing that lament to my husband, gone so far from me. While not chasing 'red haired May' his mistress of service to country kept him from home. So I find it apropos. Thank you again |

| You might be interested in the only double CD of Scottish Gaelic Christmas songs released last year and also the new book which is about to arrive hot off the press this week! - Both entitled Duan Nollaig. CD on Greentrax ( Fiona J Mackenzie) ,was Scotlands best seller last Christmas and comprises 35 traditional and contemporary Christmas songs, for all ages. It was released in response to many requests froma ll over the world partuicularly from teachers and sinegrs who couldn't get hold of Gaelic Christmas material. the book includes arrangements for voice, piano and guitar, lyrics and translations.
