We are performing work on the web and radio servers today that will result in some down time. When we actually start it could be up and down for a number of times during the course of an hour.
We ran into some problems last nite with some things we are trying to do. Basically we are trying to consolidate 2 servers into 1 and yours truly made a major boo boo. For those familiar with linux I somehow overwrote the var directory!!
Last summer 2004 we used some of the donations we receive to purchase a 160 GB netdisk portable drive for system backup. All I can say is the complete drive back up saved us! We were able to restore the var directory which does not contain our website, but contains the equilivant of about 20 hours of configuration work!
The plan is for today to work on the servers. We found an awesome deal on a new server to replace our aging and noisy radio server. The best part is it only cost $49.95 for the server because of an incredible deal at the Micro-Center in Cambridge Massachusetts. We also received a donation gift from a local friend of a 120 GB drive for the radio server. The current server is max'd out at 20 GB! I'll post the details of this new server, but we need to figure out today how to copy everything over.
We are almost down with the work to our servers. Website and Broadcast have been offline most of the day. We expect by 9:00 PM EST we should be back up 100%.

Thanks for all of the hard work you do, Mac! For the excellent site, I can put up with a few hours of not being able to get on! Just don't let it stay down TOO long! I might go into withdrawals! I had to work until 7pm today, so apprently I missed all of the down time anyway!

The new radio server is very nice. It replaces a computer that was vintage 1997.
Hopefully this should result in improve sound quality, more room now for new songs (120GB) and faster access. One immediate result I notice is that when adding new songs the software does not skip the song, so already well worth the investment.
Still a little more work to do. We are going to try and move the database server to the radio server and see how it performs. If it works good, we can save $$$ by only running 2 servers instead of 3!
Also, there is a very strong likelyhood that if you sent mail to us anytime today we did not get it. Please resend!

So THAT'S why all the emails I sent you titled "You Suck!" bounced back to me !

Just a little update on our site being unavailable at times for the best week.
We have just spent a whole week banging our heads against the wall working on new servers for Highlander Radio, so unfortunately I have not been able to work on some new features and be around the forums much.
For the past week there have been computer parts everywhere, tools, screws and various other items thrown all around while we tried to create the new web server. The main problems was I thought the store kept selling me a bum motherboard. Would get everything all hooked up and then nothing on the screen. We narrowed it down to the motherboard.
And we could not understand getting 3 bum motherboards in a row. Well, after the 3rd trip to the store we examined everything we did because we were then convinced it was something we were doing. Turns out our experience with these new CPU's needs improvement. The AMD Athlon 64 requires a seperate power supply and hanging from the power cords was the little ATX 4 plug supply.
Viola, the motherboard came alive and we are now making progress with the new Web Server. Hopefully we can move our database on to this server shortly and then all of the other services.
Our old webserver is going to serve as a complete back-up. If anyone knows a way to do this with linux would appreciate some help. Basically, I want to turn this webserver on and have it make an exact duplicate of our new webserver through the network.
If all you want is the second machine to be a backup server try Mondo. The software will let you back everything up to either CD-R's or an NFS partition.
Today we had a major problem with our mail server that receives mail for CelticRadio.net.
Any email sent to us probably will not be received, so please resend anything that you sent to us in the last 24 hours.
We now have chosen a new mail server called "SurgeMail" made by some folks in New Zealand. It is a nifty little program and best of all the license for <=5 users is free - so we have it up and running now and receiving our emails.
This mail server is not for our Founder Accounts, but for mail sent from our website and to our email addresses for Highlander Radio.
During the past 2 hours we had to reboot the servers numerous times, so again my apologies. We should not have any more issues like this for the rest of the week.
The last item for us to do is move all of our web server files on to our new web server computer, but this will take a few weeks to accomplish.
