"Five long years," thought the old bard, now even more careworn and travel weary than before. "Five long years on the road, finding new adventures, learning new songs and stories. I wonder who I will find in my old haunt, the place where I spent so many pleasant hours, and so much coin, with so many dear and dastardly friends."
He pushed open the door and peered into the darkness. No faces visible yet in the black corners of the room, as he waited for his vision to adjust from the bright sunshine outside. He noted that his old favorite seat was open, and creaked into it.
"Wat'll it be, traveler?" groaned a hauntingly familiar voice.
His old eyes turned toward the sound of the voice. "Whisky if you please." he replied to the stunning middle-aged woman behind the bar. Her face looked familiar too, he mused, though he could not bring to mind any occasion of having met her.
"You look as if you've seen a ghost," she grinned as she pushed a glass in his direction..
"Perhaps I have," he mumbled distractedly. "You look familiar. Yet is is five long years since I set foot in this place, and I cannot recall ever having met you."
"You'd be right in thinking that," she replied is a wistful voice. "For I was raised by my mother in a place far from here, and lived there on my own after her passing until last year, when my father died and left me this place."
"You are daughter to old Hamm then?" Amergin babbled excitedly. "You certainly bear resemblance to that old codger, yet in a far more comely fashion."
"I'm thanking ye for that," she replied with a smile." I only met him a few times, and my mother raised me far differently, but folks tell me I'm a lot more like him than you'd expect for all that." She reached out a hand. "Mariel, daughter of Hamm, and proprietor of this dubious establishment. And you?"
"Amergin," he replied, taking the proffered hand. "Bard extraordinaire, at least in my own mind. Songs, stories, cheap tricks. Blessings and curses if you pay enough. Back from years on the road, ready to rest these weary bones for a while."
"Welcome indeed," said the engaging owner, "Let me buy you another drink, and let's hope you can attract me some more customers. It's been slow and dreary all this year. The old ones miss my father, the younger ones are too cheap to buy drinks and food. And no one has brightened the place with music for a good long spell."
"Let's see if we can cure that last one," grinned the bard, taking a sip of the whisky and pulling an aging but obviously well cared for harp out of a worn leather bag at his feet. "Here's one that used to please."

"Greetings Sisterknight!" he smiled in her direction, "May I be allowed to buy your first round after so long a time? It has indeed been a while since much of anyone stopped in, and music is even scarcer these days. You well remember when the fiddles played, the bodhrán beat, and the wombat danced, but long has it been since we have seen those wonders. Welcome indeed!" |

The old bard smiles as he finishes his tune. How pleasant to have some company at last. The long sleep of the winter snows is finally ending and the melting gales of spring may have finally begun. A long time yet until we can sleep in the sunshine, he thinks, but the warm glow of conviviality combines well with a good drink ("Thanks Hamm, yes, I will have another.") and the sharing of music and story; the simple pleasures of a bard's life.
"Lady Leelee, I most heartily welcome you back. It has been too long since we shared those good times here. May I introduce my new friend Eirani Copperwood? An appreciator of good music, from all indications. And here! Someone new coming in to share with us." |

Greetings Eirani Copperwood, and good tidings. When first I came to this place, I found lively company, music, and refreshment for the spirit, but of late, it has indeed been quiet. I can only hope to restore a bit of former days in responding to so gracious an invitation. For to ask a bard to play is like asking him to breathe. Of a certain, we cannot help it. Perhaps this will do?

The old bard eyed the newcomer without overtly staring. She was certainly distinctive. Not too tall in stature, ears somewhat reminiscent of an elf, something canine about the mouth. Yes, distinctive indeed. He nursed his drink and waited for what would come next. |

The tall stranger nudged a bit closer to the fire and relit his pipe, feeling the cold wind in Perkeo's poetry. "Nice to have a warm hearth and the company of friends," he said, to nobody in particular. "Níl aon tinteán mar do thinteán féin, the Irish say. There's no fireplace like your own fireplace. But a cozy fire in a friendly pub is the next best thing."
He began to play softly on his beloved harp, staring thoughtfully into the fire. |

"Welcome Perkeo!" quoth the bard still seated by the fire, gathering dust and cobwebs, "And a hearty welcome to life and laughter and lively tunes in this place once again."
"The drum and the tune I mind not a bit," continued the bard, puffing on a long-stemmed pipe, "but I must admit, I do look askance at a rum-swilling scalawag bouncing in here so brash and bold."
He winked at the drummer and puffed a bit more on his pipe. "Though I do see you are an honorable practitioner of the bodhrán, and a hurler as well, so perhaps it's not as bad as all that."
Amergin ordered another round of fine whiskey for himself and rum for the bouncy newcomer, who had once frequented these walls more than at present.
It had been more than a long year and a day since that door last opened, when the lovely Lady Leelee hoped for some conviviality during the cold winter months. A second winter come and gone, and now the first buds of spring bid welcome to some new life in the old gathering place at the crossroads. One looks forward to more of the same. |

I am a Celtic Christian, and an aspiring bard. I seek knowledge of the old ways of the Celts, especially the Irish, and I pose an interesting conundrum.
I know that no reconstruction of ancient druidic belief or practices can claim to be authoritative, but I have been fascinated by the stories of Morgan Llewellyn, who seems to have an excellent grasp of the ancient times, in so many ways. This is especially evident in her books, The Bard, and Thew Druids.
I also realize that institutions have dramatically corrupted the Christianity of Jesus and the early disciples. In looking at what the Bible really teaches, as opposed to what organized religion may teach today, I find many areas of kinship with ancient Celts and Druids. I see some holes in their belief system, in that they see power and personality in so many aspects of nature, and yet fail to see the person who is the power behind it all, but I also see so much in common between anti-religious Christians such as I am, and those who lived so close to the nature world they could see the hand of the creator in every bush and tree.
I see many posts on this board decrying the intolerance of contemporary (and certainly Medieval) Christianity toward the druids and ancient Celts, but I wonder if anyone has ever really explored the common ground between ancient Christianity and Celtic spirituality? I see so much in common that is never acknowledged by either side, and it saddens me.
I've tried to read as much as I could on this forum before posing this question, but it wanders into so many areas, it is hard to find a common thread. So I seek the common ground between those who have a relationship with Christ, and those who commune with the nature He created; and I look for relationships with those who have a common quest. Are there any kindred spirits here? |

Welcome back to the pub Annabelle. I'm fairly new here myself, compared to these locals, but it's an enjoyable place and we hope to see it revived as a place of hospitality and conviviality. As you may be able to tell, I'm a bit of a poet and a bard, which may help explain the flowery language.

I often wear the kilt, at the annual Rabbie Burns supper, to perform Celtic music, and at festivals, such as the Colorado Scottish Festival and Rocky Mountain Highland Games this past weekend:
And by the way, that song about the blue ribbon is called "The Scotsman." Our band sings it quite often, much to the amusement of our audiences. Here's a version I found on YouTube.

Amergin raised his eyes as the door opened. A weary looking traveler squinted into the semi-darkness, sighed and closed the door, leaving the pub quiet and nearly lifeless.
Amergin wondered where the music had gone, what had happened to the wombat who once danced for a bowl of ale, to the lively bodhrán player who had burst in so boisterously, to the sounds of guitar and fiddle and flute that had once moved dancing feet, but now lay silent.
There was life once here, he thought, but it seems dormant now. I tried to reanimate it, but perhaps some things are beyond even the power of the bard. Perhaps they will come back. I hope so. It's a hard life on the road. I had hoped for some small comfort of human contact here. Now I wonder. |
