I don't know how many of you have noticed that I haven't been online much (even in the IRC channel where I lurk) over the last couple of days. I was trying to upgrade the hard drive in Lugh (my main workstation). Windows was being a pain to migrate, even via a re-install onto the new drive, so I figured I'd put my original drive back in and not worry about it for a while, right?

Well, in the process of plugging it back in, I pulled the wrong Molex connector, and didn't realise until several unsuccessful boot attempts of both Linux and Windows, that I had unplugged my CPU fan. Ok, it hasn't shot flames, so maybe we're ok. I power it down and restore power to the CPU fan. Then I try to boot.

2k gets a stop error on boot. it's pretty much gone, negating all the efforts of trying to upgrade without a Windows reinstall. But no biggie, it's windows. I can reinstall some games.

I then try to boot LFS 4 . . . NOPE! e2fsck freaks. I am eventually able to get it to boot, but I can't log in.

I have been the last day or two becomming really good friends with e2fsck, and learning very well what the mysterious /lost+found directory is for. I have managed to get the system to boot to I can login. It still has to run e2fsck every time I reboot though (which only works when run manually from init=/bin/bash )

I got lucky that X still works at the current time in order to be able to check Highlander Radio. But I lost my theme. I'll have to dig around and see what I can find there. I also had to fight with it some to get the NIC working too. I've still got a lot of work to do on this, but now at least I should be able to bring my mp3 library back online and keep up on Highlander Radio again. And there is hope that my system may actually survive without a re-lfs ing. I copied it over to another drive though. for safety's sake Got a lot of repair work to do, but at least it should be doable smile.gif

Try *THIS* with Windows!

Wish me luck.

Good news!

Lugh appears to be healthy again. I found much of my WindowMaker config in the lost+found and was able to restore it. Then I found a copy of WhiteMagic from Digitalblasphemy and didn't even have to re-DL that! How cool is that!. Only thing I'm missing is my thermometer readouts in my dock and then I think everything will be back to normal, and I'll be ready to try again to upgrade to the new HDD....

I did something like that when I upgraded my hard drive on my old work horse a couple of years ago....... only I just didn't realize what drive I was looking at and accidently hit re format....arrrggghhhh.....I lost hours and hours of image and layout work never to be recovered.

I'm glad this disaster has narrowly been averted Aadi I know that can be quite stressful

Peace

Mikel

I'm glad you got it back up and running Aaediwen. Times like that can be the most frustrating.

This is a good reminder for myself when I upgrade the Win2k hard drive this summer. Backup, Backup, Backup!
