We watched The Golden Compass, and altho the special effects were indeed special,what the writer seems to be trying to do is make an epic like LotR or the Narnia series. His story falls quite short of the goal mainly because the story is so scatter-shot; I got the feeling he was grasping at the odd idea that would pop into his head and mix it all together to make a quote 'Fantasy' story.

JRR Tolkien created a complex, compelling trilogy by striving to create a full mythology-styled story complete with races, creatures, languages, histories.
CS Lewis created a story with the goal of entertaining children who were refugees from London during the bombings of WWII so his story has the kind of images & characters somewhat familiar to kids already (Father Christmas, fauns, princes, witches).

This Golden Compass story just wasn't cohesive; the characters seemed hollow to me. It tried to be on the level of Narnia or LotR but fell far short.

"In Bruges" enjoyed it although there's a heck of a lot of swearing:)

The Reaping

Watched "The Interpreter" with Nicole Kidman and Sean Penn. Two of my favorite actors. Was a lot to digest, but I really loved the film and made me want to learn the history of Africa all the more.

Holes

Watched "The Bucket List" Now I know some folks either loved or hated this movie. I was told it was hiliarious, but I did not find it as such. Instead, I found it very endearing,insightful, sad, yet hopeful for mankind. I learned how we all tend to take each other for granted, how silly unforgiveness is and how we should all try to accomplish life here on earth for the time we are given. I also learned how wealth does not answer or take care of all our problems. The guy who barely had nothing but the love of his family as the most happiest and died the most peaceful. I found this film to be very honest and touching.

P.S. I Love You - Now I have to restock on tissues; pretty much cried through the whole movie, laughed too.

Invisible - Interesting

I watch the Spiderwick Chronicles the other night. I rather enjoyed it but there seem to be a sense of magic and wonder missing from it. The effects were great, it was funny at some points and scary at times for little ones. But it still seems to be missing something and I just couldn't put my finger on it. Maybe more character development? It's one of those movie that I would say was very good but not great. I suppose I'm just still waiting for another Labyrinth.

Braveheart (again)

Highlander: The Source - Not what I expected, but it was nice to see Adrian Paul again

Has anyone seen "The Waterhorse"?

After seeing it the first time, I took my five year old grandson. I enjoyed it just as much the second time.

The only thing is that I thought a waterhorse was really a "horse" that tricked you into riding it to the bottom of the loch. Not Nessie!!!!

So far reviews for the new Batman movie put it down as the best Superhero movie easily beating all three Spiderman movies. I still wish the would put him in the gray costume.
