Hallo a h-uile duine! Hello everyone! At the request of CelticRose, this thread will be a place for beginners to try out their Gaelic or to learn a little Gaelic! I am not going to go into any heavy discussions on grammar or anything like that here. The intention of this thread is just to get you speaking some Gaelic. I thought we could start out be introducing ourselves! The way to introduce yourself in Gaelic is to say Is mise... followed by your name. This is pronounced "Iss mish-uh." Typically, in conversation, this is reduced to jsut 'S mise which is pronounced "smish-uh." My name, Allen, in Gaelic is spelled Ailean (pronounced "Ah-lun".) So to say "I am Allen," I would say: 'S mise Ailean. Now if I wanted to say where I live I would say "Tha mi a' fuireach ann an..." followed by the place where I live. This is pronounced "Haa mee uh foo-roch awn un.." So I would say: Tha mi a' fuireach ann an Wytheville, Virginia! Now if the place you live in begins with a b, f, m, or p you would say ann am instead of ann an. For instance, if I lived in Baltimore, I would say Tha mi a' fuireach ann am Baltimore. Okay! Anybody care to give it a try? |

Tapadh leibh, Allen! Feasgar math a h-uile duine! S mise Ros. Tha mi a' fuireach ann an Arizona. Tha mi ag ionnsachadh Gaidhlaig. Mar sin leibh, an drasta. Thank you, Allen (I forgot your name in Gaelic) Good afternoon everyone I am Rose. I live in Arizona. I am learning Gaelic. Bye for now. Feel free to correct me on anything above. I have forgotten quite a bit. Sorry, my accent marks don't see to work on here for some reason. |

Gun robh math agaibh, Allen. S'mise Stoirmeil. Tha mi a fuireach ann an New York. |
Posted by: CelticRose 07-Feb-2005, 01:30 PM |
Failte Stoirmeil! What does "Gun robh math agaibh" mean? Tha mi duilich. |
Posted by: WizardofOwls 12-Feb-2005, 08:54 PM |
Roughly translated, that means something like "That was good of you" Tapadh leat , Stoirmeil! Here's something else to try. Let's ask someone how they are. To do that in Gaelic you would say Ciamar a tha thu? (Kimmer a ha oo) In response you might say: Tha mi gu math (Haa mee goo maa) I am well Tha mi glé mhath (Haa mee glay vaa) I am very good Meadhannach math (May-un-ock maa) Middling well Chan eil mi gu math (Chan yell mee goo maa) I am not well Gu math bochd (Goo maa bock) Pretty poor Then, after you answer, you might want to say: Ciamar a tha thu fhein? (Kimmer a ha oo hayn) or How are you yourself? So: Ciamar a tha thu??? |

Feasgar math a h-uile duine! Tapadh leat, Allen! Tha mi gu math! Ciamar a tha thu fhein? Ciamar tha 'dol dhut? Tha i fliuch an Arizona. Tha mi 'n dochas gu bheil sibh gu math. Tioraidh an drasda. |

Hallo a Ròs! Tha mi glé mhath tapadh leat! Tha i soilleir, grianach, blàth ann an Virginia an diugh! It is clear and sunny and warm in Virginia today! Here is how you would say "What kind of weather do you have?": Dé seòrsa sìde a th'agaibh ? Or, you could say "What's the day like outside?": Dé 'n coltas a th'air an là a-muigh? Some Gaels when referring to weather as it (it is cold) use 'e' - it (masculine), others use 'i - it (feminine). Either is acceptable. I tend to use i. Here are some possible responses: Tha i/It is: blàth - warm tioram - dry grianach - sunny teth - hot fuar - cold fliuch - wet gaothach - windy sgothach - cloudy soilleir - clear or bright dorch - dark fiadhaich - wild/stormy garbh - rough/stormy ceòthach - misty/foggy Here are a few other words you can use: beagan (a little) Tha i beagan fuar (It is a little cold) caran (Somewhat) Tha i caran fuar (It is somewhat cold) uabhasach (Terribly) Tha i uabhasach blàth (It is terribly warm) a' fàs (growing/getting) Tha i a' fàs gaothach (It is getting windy) Here are a few other miscellaneous weather-related phrases: Tha i a' cur an t-sneachda.It is snowing (Literally It is putting snow) Tha an t-uisge ann.It is raining. Tha smùid-uisg' ann. There is a drizzle/fine rain on. Tha i briagha. It is beautiful. Tha reothadh ann. There is a frost on. Happy learning! |

You can use 'smuid' in a slightly different but very common and colloquial way .. hehe (i bet Alan knows what's coming : Tha smuid orm - i am drunk .... btw theres loads of expressions for that .... as for example tha mi air mo dhalladh tha deoch orm I cant think of any others as I am no expert in that area, but i know theres more around than that. Who knows of any other phrases along those lines? |

'Se do bheatha, a charaid! You're welcome, my friend! I am not aware of any online sources for names. That doesn't meant that there aren't any though! Several of my sources have lists of names, so if there is a particular one you are looking for, let me know, and I'll see if I can find it for you! Agus fàilte air ais! And welcome back! |

Hi Steven! Unfortunately, none of those names are of Gaelic origins so there are no Gaelic equivalents. The best I can give you would be the renderings of those names used in the Gaelic Bible. Anna - Anna Joshua - Iosua Steven - Stèphen For Stephanie, I'll have to ask around on a couple of Gaelic lists I subscribe to. I'll see what I can come up with for ya! |

Hallo a DevotedDefender! Failte! S'mise Rose. Tha mi a' Arizona! Tha mi traveling to Alsea, Oregon in June to visit family who live there. I have never been to Oregon and very excited to see your state. Se do bheatha to meet you. Hallo a-huile duine! Allen or others, feel free to correct any of my Gaelic, ok? Feasgar math! |
Posted by: WizardofOwls 05-Apr-2005, 06:39 PM
Hello Steven! I got a response to our question! Stephanie can be rendered thus: Stèphenidh, or maybe Stèpheanaidh - the "idh"/"aidh" ending in Gàidhlig has that "ee" sound. So there you have it! |
Posted by: Sonee 06-Apr-2005, 08:53 AM |
I hope this is the place to ask this particular question!! if not...well....anyway, here goes!! Allen- In the online course I was studying from the BBC they pronounced "ciamer a tha thu" as 'Kimmer a taa too'. Is this just a difference in dialect or did I not hear the recordings properly? oh yeah..... 'S mise Sonee. Tha mi a fuireach ann an Kearney Nebraska. Ciamer a tha thu? |
Posted by: CelticRose 06-Apr-2005, 05:29 PM |
Failte! Sonee! Glad to have you here. s'mise Rose. Tha me gu math, tapadh leibh. Ciamar a tha thu fhein? Tioraidh an drasda. |

Hallo a-rithist! Hello again! As far as accents go, there is a thread here in the Celtic Languages forum dealing with just that topic! It gives several options for making accents. Now on "kimmer a taa too," that sounds very much like Irish Gaelic! As far as I know (and I am no expert by any means) "th" is always pronounced like an English "h" in Scottish Gaelic. I am not aware of any exceptions. I have never encountered "tha thu" pronounced "taa too" other than in Irish Gaelic. Are you learning the Irish or Scottish Gaelic? Glad you are enjoying yourself here! Make yourself at home! |
Posted by: Sonee 06-Apr-2005, 11:08 PM |
Hallo Rose!! Tha mi gu math, tapadh leat!! Sorry about the accent question!! There is so much to do here I must have overlooked it elsewhere!! I will certainly look it up, tapadh leat!! apperently I was learning Irish Gaelic!! It's good to have that clarified!! I don't think I paid much attention to the title of the lesson other than to see 'learn' and 'gaelic' in the same sentence!! Thanx for the education!!! Now on to serious learning!!! |
Posted by: CelticRose 07-Apr-2005, 05:38 PM |
Hallo Sonee! It is easy to get Irish and Scots Gaelic confused. I started off learning Irish. Ciamar a tha thu an-diugh? Tha i breagha an Arizona an-diugh! Tha mi ag ionnsachadh Gaidhlig. Feasgar math! |
Posted by: WizardofOwls 07-Apr-2005, 08:03 PM
Hey, no problem at all! I hope that I didn't sound like I was fussing! I just couldn't remember at the time I wrote that how to do it, but I remembered we had a thread about it, so I thought I would steer you to it. Were you able to find it? Have you found the lessons I posted here for Scottish Gaelic? I think they are good lessons, and they have the added benefit of sound files so that you can hear the Gaelic as well as see it! |
Posted by: Sonee 07-Apr-2005, 08:25 PM |
Hallo Ròs!! Tha mi gu math an diugh, tapadh leat! Ciamer a tha thu fhein? Tha i dorch, beagan fuar an Nebraska an diugh!! I have no idea what ag ionnsachadh means in you gaelic sentance! (That is what gaidhlig means, right?) so I can't respond to that at this time!!! Feasgar math Hallo Allen!! Don't worry, you weren't fussing! I knew at some point I was going to ask a question that had already been asked or discussed somewhere else!! No biggie! And yes, I found it and got it to work, thanx for 'steering me in the right direction'!! Now you went and read my mind! I was going to ask (if I didn't find the answer elswhere!LOL) if there was any place to actually hear these words being said!! I haven't check it out yet but I will shortly!! Soon as I find it!! Things can be kind of overwhelming around here! Especially if you think you have to add your 2 cents in on everything, like I do!! Half the time I forget what all I posted to and where it's at! Oh well, it will all come together in time!!! So tell me, how bad did I mess up the earlier gaelic?? |
Posted by: WizardofOwls 07-Apr-2005, 08:42 PM |
Hi Sonee! You didn't do badly at all! Just a couple of tiny things... "Ciamer" is actually spelled "Ciamar" I would write "Tha i dorch, beagan fuar an Nebraska an diugh!! " as Tha i dorch agus beagan fuar ann an Nebraska an diguh" "Agus" means and "ann an" means in Ag ionnsachadh means learning, so ag ionnsachadh Gàidhlig means "Learning Gaelic" I think you will like the sound files but they are not actually posted here. I provide a link in the lessons to where the accompanying sound files can be found. Hope you enjoy them! Let me know what you think! Agus glé mhath! And very good! Suas leis a' Ghàidhlig! Keep going wtih the Gaelic! |
Posted by: Sonee 07-Apr-2005, 09:00 PM
Thank you! I guess I wrote ciamar down wrong!! (was reading my notes for the post!!) I knew there was a word for and, I just couldn't remember it!! Guess that one missed getting my notes! What is the difference between 'an diugh' and 'an diguh'? Today and tonight? Because that was my next question, how do you say tonight! (didn't know ann an ment in!! Or else I just overlooked it!) if ag ionnsachadh means learning what would 'lesson' be? As in 'gàidhlig lesson'. I know I'm being quite the pest, but I've looked at some of the other threads here and they seem a bit overwhelming, possibly over my head at the present time!! Too much Gàidhlig on the page and not enough in my head!! Tappadh leat, Allen!! You are very patient! |
Posted by: WizardofOwls 07-Apr-2005, 09:14 PM |
an diugh is correct. an diguh was a typo. That's the fun thing about learning a foreign language. Now I can make typos in TWO languages! a-nochd is tonight "ann an" actually means "In a" NOT "in the"! "In the" is actually "anns an" or "anns a' ". It gets a little complicated. We'll save that for another time if that's okay! "learning a Gaelic lesson" would be "ag ionnsachadh leasan Gàidhlig" Don't forget, in Gaelic, MOST (but not all!) adjectives go AFTER the noun they describe! "Beagan" which you used above is one of the few exceptions! |
Posted by: Sonee 07-Apr-2005, 09:30 PM |
'little complicated'?? How do you say 'understatment' in Gaelic?!!?LOL How in the world does anyone, who isn't a native speaker, learn this enough to keep up in a regular conversation? I can't even keep up when it's just typed!! Sheesh!!! |

hallo a h-uile duine how is" ionnsachadh " pronounced? Oh and what about h-uile duine, just how is it said? hallo ros, s'mise Stephen nice to meet you, is that what "Se do bheatha" means? you have used the word " feasgar " what is that and how do i say it ... Ailean, tapadh leat for the help with names question though how is "Iosua" pronounced, is it the same english... And is there a gaidhlig term for "you da man"... 'cause you are ... any way tapadh leat again. Tapadh leat a h-uile duine, (is that close) i can now relate to my 3year old daughter, as I sit here and so intently listen to (read) every word hoping to learn a new one or two that I can use... one last question, for tonite any way. What would be a fitting good bye ? |
Posted by: WizardofOwls 08-Apr-2005, 07:26 AM |
"ionnsachadh" is pronounced YOON-su-chugh. A word about the pronounciation above. Pronounce the ch like the ch in loch or Bach, and the gh is very deep, in the back of your throat, almost sounds like you are gargling.. In Gaelic the emphasis in a word with more than one syllable almost always is on the first syllable, the major exceptions being recent loan words from other languages and a few contracted words. "h-uile duine" is pronounced "hoola doonya" and means everyone, literally, every man. "Se do bheatha" is pronounced "sheh daw veh-huh" and means You're welcome!"An interesting note: literally translated, Se do bheatha means "He is your life," referring to God! I would pronounce ""Iosua" as "eesua" Sorry, Sonee, I coudn't find "understatement"in any of my dictionaries! And you are correct, Gaelic is a complicated and difficult language to learn, but in my opinion the work is worth it. I would classify myself as a low to middle intermediate level student. Not a beginner anymore, but not yet advanced either. And I have been studying for around 7 years! But when I listen to a song by Capercaillie or Runrig or Mary Jane Lamond or Distant Oaks (or any other band that sings in Scottish Galeic) and I find that I can suddenly understand some of what is being sung when I couldnt before, it is such a wonderful feeling and worth every moment I've put into it! The key is to put some work into it every day! Don't let a day go by that you don't do something in your chosen langauge. Translate one of the Litirs from the BBC site. Work through one of the lessons I've given here. Listen to the sound files that go with it. Listen to one of the Litirs as it is being read. And speak some of it too! Say hi to your cat or dog or houseplant! I have 2 shamrocks that I got as gifts for St Patricks Day and I try to speak to them everyday! I even gave them Gaelic names: Eilidh and Màiread! But the most important thing is do SOMETHING! Now, for goodbye, some customary ways to say it would be: Bidh mi 'gad fhaicinn! (Bee mee gat ech-keen) I'll be seeing you! Mar sin leat! (Mar shin let) Bye for now Latha math! (Lah mah!) Goodday! Oidhche mhath! (uh-eech-yuh va) Good night! Beannachd leat! (byanakhk let) Goodbye! (literally Blessings with you) Slàn leat (slahn let) Goodbye! (literally Health with you) Tsioraidh an-dràsta! (chee-ury un-drah-sta) Cheerio for now Tsioraidh an-dràsta, a h-uile duine!! |
Posted by: WizardofOwls 08-Apr-2005, 07:33 AM |
Ahh! I forgot! "Feasgar" is pronounced "feskar" and means "evening", so Feasgar math is good evening! Not sure about "you da man", but tapadh leat a charaid! (thanks my friend!) |
Posted by: Sonee 08-Apr-2005, 08:06 AM |
Hallo Allen agus Stephen!! I actually speak to my children in Gàidhlig!! I figure they might as well learn right along with me!! My son is 3 and learning english anyway so why not start him off bilingual!! Besides, they say kids pick up languages faster than adults so perhaps they will end up helping me!!! Allen, there are exceptions to every rule but can it be said that most 'ch' sounds should be pronounced like loch or bach? ie: Tsioraidh an-dràsta? Too bad about 'understatement'!! What is the difference between math and mhath? Besides pronounciation and spelling!! Both seem to represent good or well, can they be interchanged? I have also noticed that you capitalize Gàighlig every time you use it, enlglish spelling or not. What's the reason for this, or is there one?! I am so looking forward to the day that I can listen to those songs and understand them as well!! At this point that is my biggest goal!! Tappadh leat, Allen, for all the help! (BTW what is help?) Mar sin leat! |
Posted by: WizardofOwls 08-Apr-2005, 08:31 AM |
Madainn mhath Sonee! Good morning Sonee! Let me show you something. Madainn mhath - Good morning Latha math - Good day Feasgar math - Good evening Oidhche mhath - Good night I'm sure you recall that most adjectives follow the noun they describe. But are you aware that Gaelic nouns, like most European languages, have genders? Latha and Feasgar (Day and Evening) are considered Masculine nouns, and Madainn and Oidhche (Night and Morning) are considered Feminine nouns! So here is the rule: Adjectives that describe masculine nouns undergo no change because of gender. Adjectives that describe feminine nouns are lenited (that means have an "h" added after the first letter). Hence Latha MATH (masculine noun), but Madainn MHATH (feminine noun)! In a bit more detail, here is what Lesson 4 has to say: ...an adjective must agree in ... gender with the noun it directly describes. This is called the attribute position. For nominative (basic) forms of nouns these are as follows : Masculine singular (no change in adjective) Gille mòr - A big lad Feminine singular (lenite adjective if possible) ? Caileag mhòr - A big girl ? All adjectives with initial consonant quality can be lenited except those beginning with l, n, r, sg, sm, sp or st. For example, caileag mhòr, caileag bheag but caileag sgìth. Typically, both in English and in Gaelic, proper nouns like the names of languages should be capitalized. And yes, you are right about ch. Most anytime you see it, it will be pronounced this way. The only exception - if it is followed by a d, like -chd. This is pronounced ch-k. This is diffcult to describe, much better to hear it. Make the hard ch sound and follow it immediately - no space in between with a hard k sound. You see this often. The word for help is "cuideachadh." "Thanks for your help" would be "Tapadh leat airson do chuideachaidh." You will notice a slight change in spelling in the Gaelic word for help - it has been lenited (had an h added after the first letter) and slenderized (had an i added before the final consonant). It is lenited because some of the possessive adjectives (my, your (singualar), and his BUT NOT her your (plural) or their!) cause lenition when possible. It is slenderized because it follows the preposition "airson" and is thus in the Genitive case. I am not going to go into the Genitive case here since this is just for easy, conversational Gaelic. The Genitive case is a difficult concept to grasp and is the main reason why I am only an intermediate student for the time being and not an advanced one! Now, have I completely confused you? I hope not! |
Posted by: Sonee 08-Apr-2005, 09:30 AM |
Madainn mhath, Allen! (can you please show me again your name in Gàighlig?) You didn't confuse me at all! I just finished listening to the sound files about vowels. Now THAT is confusing!! You actually made it make some sense!! Tapadh leat airson do chuideachaidh, Allen!! (how would you pronounce 'airson do chuideachaidh'?) I think I know but want confirmation! BTW: Caimar a tha thu an diugh? (don't want to forget what I 'already' know!!) I know this won't be right but you should get the drift, and then you can tell me how to do it right! Tappadh leat do sin leasan Gàighlig! (don't know the correct way to say 'for that' Was I at least close?) |
Posted by: WizardofOwls 08-Apr-2005, 11:21 AM |
Hi Sonee! I'm afraid I owe you an apology! In my last post I said that chuideachaidh was slenderized because it was in the Genitive case. I was wrong, it is in the Dative case. Sorry about that! Sgrìobh thu: You wrote: Madainn mhath, Allen! (can you please show me again your name in Gàighlig?) 'S mise Ailean! I am Allen! Sgrìobh thu: (how would you pronounce 'airson do chuideachaidh'?) I think I know but want confirmation! I would pronounce it: er-SON do CHOO-chu-chwee (pronounce that first and last ch like loch, the middle one as ch in church Airson is one of the exceptions to the "emphasize first syllable" rule, because it is actually a contraction of the words "air son" and the emphasis just naturally falls on SON. BTW: Caimar a tha thu an diugh? (don't want to forget what I 'already' know!!) Tha mi gu math, tapadh leat! Agus, ciamar a tha thu fhéin? I am well thanks! And how are you? Tappadh leat do sin leasan Gàighlig! (don't know the correct way to say 'for that' Was I at least close?) I would say Tapadh leat airson an leasan Gàidhlig sin. Thank you for that Gaelic lesson. |
Posted by: Faileas 08-Apr-2005, 11:51 AM
I pronounce "chuideachadh" "chodjochoo" with both chs pronounced like in "loch" and the ooh- sound very short, close to the sound that some people make when they see something disgusting ... ( )but probably other dialects do otherwise, hehe. Nae mind, ye wont go wrong with this one . All the other things are completely okay. |
Posted by: Sonee 08-Apr-2005, 12:07 PM |
Hallo Ailean! Hello Allen Tha mi fuar! Tha i goathach uabhasach an diugh! I am cold! It is terribly windy today! I am going to attempt something, try not to laugh!! I bha snok an-de a-muigh agus tha i uamhasach an-diugh! I'm not sure if that was the correct 'was' for the sentance I was writing! When you pick yourself up from laughing so hard please correct it for me! Tappadh leat! |
Posted by: WizardofOwls 08-Apr-2005, 12:09 PM
Hallo a-rithist Sonee! Hello again, Sonee! I missed a little something in the above quote! When you were talking about "ch", you were talking about the pronunciation I attempted to give for Tsioraidh an-dràsta weren't you? Well, in my attempted pronunciations its difficult for me to distinguish for you when I mean CH as in loch or Bach and ch as in church! In the above I meant ch as in church. Tsioraidh is just an attempt to "Gaelicize" the English slang word Cheerio! How about this... When I attempt to show you how to pronounce something, if I mean CH as in loch or Bach I will capitalize it as I have done here. If I mean ch as in church I'll leave it in lower case. Make sense? |
Posted by: Sonee 08-Apr-2005, 12:35 PM
Yep!! Makes perfect sense to me! |
Posted by: WizardofOwls 08-Apr-2005, 12:42 PM
Hallo a ghràidh! Hello dear! I would never laugh at you for making a mistake! You are just learning and the absolute best way to learn is to try, even if you make mistakes! There is an old Gaelic saying. I can't remember the Gaelic for it just now, but in English it means: Better broken Gaelic than perfect English! Okay now for a few corrections... uabhasach is another one of those exceptions to the "noun first, adjective second" rule. Your sentence should read: Tha i uabhasach goathach an diugh! Sgrìobh thu: You wrote: I bha snok an-de a-muigh agus tha i uamhasach an-diugh! This is good! It's not exactly correct, but you got your point across! I was able to understand what you were trying to say. We just need to tweek it a little! First off, in Gaelic the verb almost always come first in the sentence. So lets make Bha the first word and move I to the second word which gives us Bha i snog / It was nice I would move a-muigh in front of an dé which gives us Bha i snog a-muigh an dé / It was nice outside yesterday The second half of your sentence says "and it is terrible today!" So to put the two halves together: Bha i snog a-muigh an dé agus tha i uamhasach an-diugh! It was nice out yesterday and it is terrible today! Sgrìobh thu: You wrote: Tappadh leat! (Just use one p, dear! ) 'Se do bheatha a charaid! You are welcome my friend! |
Posted by: WizardofOwls 08-Apr-2005, 01:08 PM
Hallo a Fhaileas a ghràidh! Hello Faileas dear! Tapadh leat airson do chuideachaidh! Thanks for your help! Ceist bheag, ma tha. A small question, however. In the above, I was attemtping to give a pronunciation for "chuideachaidh". Notice that it is slenderized. That should affect that final vowel sound, shouldn't it? And as far as the ch sounds goes, the one that I said sounded like ch in church, you rendered as "dj" in your pronunciation guide. Aren't they nearly the same sound? Your's is just vocalized a little more than mine. |

(Just use one p, dear! ) Believe it or not but my first sentence read 'Tha i uabhasach goathach an diugh' but then I remembered your rule and changed it!!! Go figure! I also debated about which to put first: "a-muigh" or "an dè", now I know! oops I was looking at my phonetic spelling not the actual word when I wrote that thank you!!! My bad!! Tapadh leat, tha sibh math charaid! |
Posted by: WizardofOwls 08-Apr-2005, 01:27 PM
Hmmm... not exactly sure which rule you are speaking of here! Tha i uabhasach goathach an diugh would have been correct, just needed to change from present tense (tha) to past tense (bha). And I'm not exactly certain what you are trying to say there at the end. tha sibh math charaid Are you trying to say "You are good, my friend" or "You are a good friend"? You are good, my friend would be "Tha thu math, a charaid" (I'm not sure why you used the formal sibh instead of the familar thu here! There's no need to call me sir! ) To say "You are a good friend" you need a completely different verb and sentence structure here. When you are saying that one thing is the the same as another thing (ie noun to noun) you have to use a different verb for "be" which is "is". Here is the construction you would use: 'Se caraid math a th' annadsa. (Literally translated, this means "It is a good friend that is in you") 'Se is a contraction of the words "Is e" annadsa is a contraction of the the words "ann tusa" (in you) |

Good grief!!! I'm as confused as you are!!! While I was writing that post I was trying to get my son to stay in bed and take his nap!! I really have no clue what I was going for there!! i used sibh instead of thu because I just copied it to my notes and knew it meant you!!! I am recopying my notes and trying to use different words in complete sentences!! I was indeed trying to say "You are a good friend"!! Are you telling me then, that the proper way to say that phrase would be "Se caraid math a th' annadsa"? Sheesh, I think I'm trying to use brain cells that haven't been used for a long time!! They don't want to absorb this information properly! Give me time, I'll get it!! I hope your a very patient man!! |

No problem! I understand completely! Yes, the proper way to say "You are a good friend" would be 'Se caraid math a th' annadsa JUst out of curiosity, have you had a chance to look at the first Gaelic lesson I posted? I think you might enjoy it! |
Posted by: Sonee 08-Apr-2005, 01:57 PM |
Actually, yes!! That is what I have been going over all day!! I have gotten as far as the second exercise!! I am trying to process all of the new words!! Some of them I can remember some I can't!! I can pronounce them all fairly well, just can't always remember which word means what?? Goodness, I didn't study this hard in school! Who'd a thunk I'd be studying so hard 13 years after I left school!! Does the website you linked to give pronounciation for the weather related words you posted earlier? (ie: fiadhauch, gaothach, etc) Oh yeah, how do you say "garden" in Gaelic? |
Posted by: WizardofOwls 08-Apr-2005, 02:08 PM |
No, but you can find a listing of some weather related words with pronunciations at http://www.scottishradiance.com in the Gaelic section there. Garden = gàrradh (f) pronounced gahragh (the gh in my pronunciation guide there is very deep, sounds like you are trying to gargle! |

Tapadh leat! I probably have enough info to process now! I have one more question and then I'll try to leave you alone for awhile!! (Try being the operative word there!!) Can you tell me a good English-Gaelic Dictionary? Or maybe two or three?! Something I can have at quick reference here at home when I'm not online? I would be forever grateful!! |

Hallo a ghràidh! Hello dear! I've already got a thread for that! Here's a link for ya! http://www.celticradio.net/php/forums/index.php?showtopic=4406 Hope that helps! |

Yes, that was very informative and helpful! Now I just have to decide which I think would be best for my learning, and my budget!! Did it actually take you the full 7 years to be able to understand song lyrics? And how often did you work on the language during those 7 years? (just trying to gauge my progress and set future goals!!) Tapadh leat, Ailean! You have been a big help these last few days!! |

If ye insist on it ye can prounounce that final sound in choodjeachag, but it is hardly heard and very, very soft. That dh and gh sound is really devellish ... The best description i ever heard is "It is the sound that a baby makes all the time - so it is a sound that is natural to mankind, we just have forgotten about it." And concerning that "ch" - sound .... church sounds to me different than choodjachadh ..... Maybe it is just my ears or the way that i learnt to pronounce it? church vocalized would be tshertsh to me or something like it (i know the ur sounds different but there is no equivalent letters to it ...). That middle sound in chuideachadh is much softer than that - more like die - french for god. of course when ye bog it down church is all about chuideachadh and die, nach eil ? |

Yes, it certainly is all about help and God!! Does anyone possible have a link, or know where to find one, where I could hear a recording of that word said? Perhaps that would help me figure it out! |

Sgriobh thusa fad na tide , a Shonaidh :-) You wrote all the time, Sony (?). Bha mise gu math leisg an seo (I was very lazy here). Tha mi' n dochas gum bi e ceart gu leor riut gun bheir mi laimh do Ailean (I hope it is all right with you, that i give a hand to Alan). Sgriobh mi post - dealan gu te aig a bheil e comasach soundfiles a dheanamh (i wrote an e-mail to a woman that can do soundfiles). Tha mi 'n dochas gun dean i "chuideachadh" air do shon (I hope that she will do "chuideachadh" for you) agus bheir mi seoladh p.-d. aice dhut ma bhios cead agam (and i will give you her e-mail when i have her permission). Chan eil fhios agam de eile a dheanamh ... (I don't know what else to do ...) Hello, a Rois, 's math d' fhaicinn an seo a-rithist (hello, rose, its good to see ye here again). Tha mise cho dona riut fhein , alas (i am so bad as yourself, hehe) Air a 'char as lugha, le sgriobhadh an seo - at least, with posting here |

Hallo Sonee and Faileas! Ciamar a tha sibh an-diugh? Tha mi 'n dochas gu bheil sibh gu math. How do you say "good to see you?" Sonee, Chan eil mi a' tuigsinn below: "Ciagmar tha 'dol dhut, an-diugh? Dè seòrsa sìde a th'agaibh? Tha i briagha agus grianach ann an Nebraska an-diughe! Chan eil mi a' tuigsinn " all this talk of nouns, verbs, etc. is making my head spin! I feel like I am in first grade! Mar sin leat! |

Hallo Faileas!! I learn things better by repetition, so the more I post here the better I will get (I hope!) Not to mention all the help I get from you and Allen!! So I don't mind at all!! The more help I can get the better! Tapadh leat, for the email about the sound file!! I have been looking around online off and on to no avail!! Hallo Ròs!! According to the notes I have (and I dont' remember what website it was from!!) I was trying to say: 'Ciagmar tha 'dol dhut, an-diugh=How are things going for you Dè seòrsa sìde a th'agaibh=What kind of weather do you have Tha i briagha agus grianach ann an Nebraska an-diugh=It is bright and sunny in Nebraska today. Apparently I didn't do it right!! I know exactly what you mean Ròs!! I feel like breaking out my old school books to relearn how to diagram a sentence or something!! And, of course, there are exceptions to every rule and I tend to find them all!! Go figure!! Thank God for Allen and Faileas!! That's all I have to say!! |

Feasgar math, a Rois , Sonee agus Aileain , ciamar a tha sibh , a h-uile - how are you all? Tha mi fhin gle mhath , ach beagan sgith - I am very well, but a bit tired. Bha mi ag obair bho sia uairean sa mhaddain gu tri uairean feasgar - i was woriking from six in the morning until three in the afternoon. Tha an t-side sgriosail an seo - the weather is terrible here, frasan troma agus gaoth fidhaich - heavy showers and a wild wind. Tha mi 'n dochas gum bi side nas fhearr agaibh - I hope that you have better weather . Chi mi a-rithist sibh - I will see you again agus beannachd leibh (good bye) |

Hello everyone! Just wanted to give you another short pointer. Here are the pronouns in Gaelic: mi - me thu - you (singular) e - he i - she sinn - we sibh - you (formal/plural) iad - they Sometimes the pronouns will combine with prepostions to form a new type of word called a prepositional pronoun. Here's an example: Beannachd leat means good bye. Literally translated, it means A blessing with you (singular). To say good bye to a group of people or to an elder, you would say Beannachd leibh. Here's how it works. "Le" is the preposition "with". "Le" will combine with the pronouns as follows: Leam = le + mi = with me Leat = le + thu = with you (singular) Leis = le + e = with him Leatha = le + i = with her Leinn = le + sinn = with us Leibh = le + sibh = with you (plural/formal) Leotha = le + iad = with them It works in a similar way with the prepostion "at" or "aig" in Gaelic. Agam = aig + mi = at me Agad = aig + thu = at you (singular) Aige = aig + e = at him Aice = aig + i = at her Againn = aig + sinn = at us Agaibh = aig + sibh = at you (plural/formal) Aca = aig + iad = at them It works in a similar fashion for all Gaelic prepositions. Hope this helps you understand, Sonee! Cum ort leis a' Ghàidhlig! Keep going with the Gaelic! |

Hallo a-rithist, a Shonee! Here is another post to help you understand a few things. These are the possessive pronouns in Gaelic: mo = my (lenites) do = your (singular) (lenites) a = his (lenites) a = her ar = our ur = your (plural/formal) an/am = their In a previous post, I mentioned lenition. Lenition is something that happens frequently in Gaelic. When it happens, you basically add an h after the first letter of the word which is affected by lenition. My, your (singlar) and his all cause lenition, the rest - her, our , your (plural/formal) and their - do not. Here's how it works. Cas is the Gaelic word for foot. So: Mo chas = my foot Do chas = your foot (singular) A chas = his foot BUT: A cas = her foot Ar casan = our feet Ur casan = your feet (Plural/formal) An casan = their feet That is why we say 'Se do bheatha ("You're welcome" to one person), but 'Se ur beatha ("You're welcome" to a group of people or to an elder) Make sense? |
Posted by: Sonee 11-Apr-2005, 10:20 PM |
Tha mi duilich, Allen. I think my brain died about 2 lessons ago!! Are you going to come to the funeral? I hear someone is going to be playing the pipes, it's supposed to be briagha!! You'll be there, won't you? |
Posted by: WizardofOwls 11-Apr-2005, 10:25 PM |
Oh, come on now! Don't give up! You're doing so well! This is a prime example of why I choose to follow a set lesson plan rather than jumping in both feet first. When you follow a set of lessons, you get the Gaelic in small digestible portions, designed to be easier to learn bit by bit. When you just jump in, you get a big jumbled mess that you're left to sort on you own. There is nothing wrong with that! Some people learn better that way. You seem to be one of them. For myself, though, I need structure. |
Posted by: Sonee 11-Apr-2005, 10:41 PM |
I wouldn't know structure if it came up and beat me over the head!! I'm trying to get ahead of myself here, I believe. Let's try this- Feasgar math, Allen. Ciagmar tha 'dol dhut? (can you tell me why 'ciagmar' is spelled this way? Or do I have something wrong...again.) Tapadh leat airson do chuideachaidh agus oidhche mhath. |
Posted by: WizardofOwls 11-Apr-2005, 10:46 PM |
Well, truthfully, it should be Ciamar. Hallo a Shonee! Tha mi gu math, tapadh leat! 'Se do bheatha, a charaid! Oidhche mhath! By the way, I think I slipped another lesson in there while you were typing your reply a few posts back, just after the lesson on prepositional pronouns. It is on possessive pronouns. Did you see both of them? |
Posted by: Sonee 11-Apr-2005, 10:54 PM |
Yeah, I saw them both.. Tha mi glè sgith!!! Which is probably why I'm having such trouble!! I still have a hard time with the whole adjective comes after noun thing!! For example: Tha mi beag air bheag ag ionnsachadh. or Tha mi ag ionnsachadh beag air bheag. CUIDEACHADH!!!!!!!!!!!! |
Posted by: WizardofOwls 11-Apr-2005, 11:05 PM |
Personally I would go with Tha mi ag ionnsachadh beag air bheag. Can't really say why. Maybe Faileas will be able to supply us with an answer next time she's on. |
Posted by: WizardofOwls 11-Apr-2005, 11:11 PM |
Uill, feumaidh mi falbh a-nis, a charaid. Well, I must go now, my friend. Tha e a' fàs fadalach agus tha mi uabhasach sgìth. It is growing late and I am terribly tired. Chi mi a-rithist thu a-màireach! I'll see you again tomorrow! Oidhche mhath! Good night! Cum ort leis a' Ghàidhlig! Keep going with the Gaelic! |
Posted by: Sonee 11-Apr-2005, 11:16 PM |
Tapadh leat, Allen!! And you are right, tha e fadalach!! Have a good night and I'll see you again another time! Oidhche mhath! |
Posted by: Faileas 12-Apr-2005, 11:03 AM
Tha mi ag ionnsachadh beag air bheag. I agree with that one - tha mise a' dol le sin. . And it makes complete sense by the way, don't overtax yourself and just basically try to understand one thing at one time. So, Alan, just a small tip - don't try to give too much information too quickly, laudable as your enthusiasm is but too much of a good thing can b damaging too . still , i am going to contradict myself but in a way it complements the things alan has said already ... There is an easier way of saying my , your , his , hers , ours, yours and theirs ... and it has to do with pronouns and their personal endings. So for example ... car agam - my car car agad - your car car aice - her car car aige - his car car againn - our car car agaibh your car (plural or polite) car againn - their car It saves you the trouble of lenition and is gramatically as correct. And everybody will understand it , I hope. |

Hallo a Fhaileas! Hello Fileas Ciamar a tha thu an-diugh, a ghràidh? How are you today, dearie? I was just going to say that the only reason I posted those last two lessons was because Sonee was confused as to when to use 'Se do bheatha/'Se ur beatha And Tapadh leat/Tapadh leibh. I could see no other way to explain these to her other than posting what I did. Perhaps it would have been better to tackle the issues one at a time though... By the way, thanks for your help here! |
Posted by: CelticRose 12-Apr-2005, 02:48 PM |
Hallo a Faileas, Sonee and Allen! Ciamar a tha sibh, a h-uile? Tha mi fhin gle mhath Tapadh leibh Allen and Faileas for always writing the English underneath the Gaelic. That really helps me a lot. I probably jumped in here with both feet too, but with the lessons you have been giving us in the other threads in this forum, I thought it would be a good place in here to practice what we have learned. However, all this grammar........bleh! I had a hard time with that with English in school days! But I am like you, Allen, in that I need structure and thanks for giving that to us. I have some questions. How do you say? "How do you say" and "I have a question" Also, I keep seeing Slainte Mhor! I don't see "Mhor" in my dictionary. I am wondering if that is Irish? Also, Sonee. What does Ciudeachadh mean? Tapadh leibh agus beannachd leibh Faileas, Sonee agus Allen. |
Posted by: WizardofOwls 12-Apr-2005, 05:04 PM
Ciamar a chanas mi... How would I say... Tha ceist agam. I have a question. I think Sonee just misspelled "cuideachadh". I think it was a cry for help! I do believe Sláinte mhór is an Irish toast! It means roughly "Great health (to you)!" Rose, anytime you see a word with an h after the first letter, like mhòr, it most likely has been lenited. To find it in a dictionary, just remove the h and look up the rest, in this case, mòr. In Scottish Gaelic, mòr means big or great. Slaìnte means health. I just looked up these words in the Irish dictionary I got for Christmas and the meanings are almost exactly the same. |

Feasgar math, a chairdean - good evening, friends! Tha mise gle mhath is gle sgith - i am very well and very tired. Bha latha trang agam aig obair agus bha coisir agam a-nochd - I had a busy day at work and I had choir (practice) tonight. Bha e gle mhath agus chord e glan rium - it was very good and I enjoyed it very much. Agus - bidh laithean dheth agam a-maireach is Diardaoin - And - i will have days off tomorrow and Thursday CelticRose wrote: "How do you say" - "de tha gaidhlig airson ..." - What is Gaidhlig for .... or if you want to ask what something means actually, i. e. a gaidhlig word you dont know yet, you could say "de tha sin a' ciallachadh?" - what does that mean? or of course "de tha Beurla airson ..." - what is English for ...? The most literal translation of that phrase however would be "Ciamar a chanas mi ....?" (the grammar of which I will refrain from explaining, hehe) other useful phrases for a learner are "chan eil mi a' tuigsinn" - I don't understand and "can(naibh) sin a-rithist" - say that again or "bruidhinn(ibh) gu slaodach" - speak slowly! The ending in brackets indicate the polite form. and "I have a question" - Tha ceist agam. (works the same way as tha car agam) "Slainte Mhor! " - I don't see "Mhor" in my dictionary. I am wondering if that is Irish? Hehehe, another grammar question alas. But ye asked for it, lol. mhor is the female form of "mor" = big, as slainte = health is a female noun. I think Allan has explained that in one of his lessons - the female adjective is lenited. cuideachadh means "help", Rose - a useful word indeed and I think, Sonee likes it hehe And Allan - 'se do bheatha, tha mise gle tholichte cuideacheadh a thoirt dhuit - I am very happy to help you (lit. to give help to you). Cord sin rium gu dearbh - I really enjoy it |
Posted by: CelticRose 12-Apr-2005, 06:26 PM |
Tapadh leibh, a chairdean! This really helps a lot! you should see all my notes! Holy cow! It is hard to keep up! I thought Slainte mhor was Irish, but I couldn't prove it as I don't have an Irish dictionary. But since it wasn't in my Scots Gaelic dictionary that is what I assumed as well. I am still trying to understand the Lenition. Oy! This grammar stuff is very hard for me. Tapadh leibh an drasta, Faileas and Allen. Chi mi a-rithist thu a-maireach! Oidhche mhath! |
Posted by: Sonee 12-Apr-2005, 09:22 PM |
Feasgar math a h-uile duine!! Holy cow!! (hey Ròs, are those MY cows?!?!LOL) I have missed a bunch today!! Let's see if I can catch up!!! Tapadh leat, Faileas!! Allen probably wouldn't give so much info all at once if I didn't ask for it all the time!! I'm always jumping ahead of myself!! And, yes, I really like the word cuideachaidh!!! But I think the phrase 'Chan eil mi a' tuigsinn' is creeping up the chart of favorites!! All of these lessons are good initially but I'm one of those people who have to actually use it before it fully sinks in!! That's why this forum is awesome!! I can practice what I learn and ya'll can correct me for next time!!! (once you've picked yourselves up off the floor!!) Is this correct? Chan eil mi a' tuigsinn 'Chi mi a-rithist thu a-maireach'. De tha sin a' callachadh? Mòran taing agus oidhche mhath! |

Sonee - I think you're doing very very well in just a short space of time. Just one or two wee mistakes if i may point them out.
I hope you are well - Tha mi 'n dòchas gu bheil thu gu math Whenever you want to say i hope you use- Tha mi 'n dòchas In English you would say I hope you're well, but in Gaelic you must use 'THAT' I hope THAT you are well or literally in Gaelic - I am in the hope that you are well - Tha mi 'n dòchas gu bheil thu gu math. I was terribly busy today so I'm very tired! - Bha mi uabhasach sgith an-diugh mar sin tha mi glè sgith. Glè is one of those words that lenite (add an h) as you have correctly done....except words begining with sg, sl, st, sp, l, n or r As 'Sgith' begins with sg - no lenition i'm afraid so glè sgith NOT gle shgith. It's always a lot to take in at first, but eventually it will all sink in. Hope that helps you out a wee bit. |

Madainn mhat, Cù Dubh!! Good morning Cù Dubh Tha mi toilche bhur computar ag abair ceart, a-rithist! (not sure this is correct!) I'm happy your computer works right again Tha mi nighean ann sgoil, an-duigh. My daughter is in school today. Tha an sgoil glan. The school is clean. (Just practicing some things I just learned in lesson 3!!!) BTW, after re-reading Allens post I realized I didn't say 'I hope you are well' correctly in my last post!! I will eventually figure this out! I think I finally, sort of, have past and present tense down. (stress 'sort of' there!!) Tha mi ag ionnsachadh fòs!! I am learning yet! Slàinte mhor agad! |

Tapadh leat, Cù Dubh!! I think I was writing my post while yours was loading so I didn't see it!! I just finished lesson 3 today but I wrote that post last night! In other words I just learned about correct lenition! Or at least that was lesson! Whether I learned it or not remains to be seen!!!LOL Mòran taing airson cuideachadh!!! |

Tha mi a' dol leis a' Chu gu bheil thu a' deanamh uabhasach math - I agree with Cu that you are doing terribly well. Bha cuid mearachdan ann, co- dhiu , alas - There were however a few mistakes (mind you, quite minor ones ) Tha mi toilche bhur computar ag abair ceart, a-rithist! (not sure this is correct!) I'm happy your computer works right again - Tha mi tolichte gu bheil an compiutair agad ag obair a- rithist. Tha mi nighean ann sgoil, an-duigh. My daughter is in school today. - Tha mo nighean ann an sgoil an-diugh Tha an sgoil glan. The school is clean. Tha sin ceart mar sin - This is right like that Tha mise gle mhath agus bha latha leisg againn - I am very well and we had a lazy day. Ach bidh sinn ag obair a- maireach: mise trath agus Brus feasgar .... - But we will be working tomorrow: myself early and Bruce in the afternoon. Mar sin - tha feum agam air cadal a-nochd - therefore i need sleep tonight (lol). Chi mi sibh a-maireach! - I will see you tomorrow! -. Tha mi ag ionnsachadh fòs!! I am learning yet! - depends actualluy on what you mean. Is it I am still learning? which would be Tha mi ag ionnsachadh fhathast. or if you want to say "However, I will learn." you would say Bidh mi ag ionnsachadh co-dhiu -"bidh" being the future tense of "tha", to be Slàinte mhor agad! - I never heard it used with this preposition actually .... The common phrase is "slainte mhor dhut!" - good health to you If you are looking for a "good bye", how ever, it would be more appropriate to use "Soraidh slan!" or "Beannachd leibh"!, "Slainte mhor" is rather used in a pub when ye have a wee dram, hehehe |

Here is another brief lesson for you. This one deals with names and how to address people. Names: Addressing People. From Teach Yourself Gaelic (TYG) pages 15-16 Personal names often change form, and are pronounced differently when someone is being addressed, e.g.: Mairead becomes a Mhairead, and Tormod becomes a Thormoid. The names of males usually have an h added after the initial letter, which affects the sound of the letter, and an i inserted before the last consonant(s). Thus Tormod becomes a Thormoid, Calum (Malcolm) becomes a Chaluim and Dòmhnall (Donald) becomes a Dhòmhnaill. Female names only have the h added after the initial letter, thus Mairead becomes a Mhairead, Sìne (Jane) becomes a Shìne and Catrìona (Catherine) becomes a Chatrìona. Names which begin with vowels or the letters l, n, or r do not change their intial letter, e.g. Iseabail and Alasdair retain their usual form. The a is also dropped before names beginning in vowels. Surnames (From TYG pages 13-14) Many Scottish surnames begin with the Gaelic word Mac meaning son, e.g.: MacDonald, Maclnnes, MacAllister. These literally mean Son of Donald, Son of Angus and Son of Alasdair, In Gaelic, the form of such surnames changes when referring to a female. Murdo MacRae is Murchadh MacRath, but Margaret MacRae is Mairead NicRath. Nic means daughter (of). A similar system operates in Iceland with the forms -son and -dottir at the end of surnames, e.g.: Magnusson and Magnusdottir. Other forms of Gaelic surnames also change when used of a female, as in the examples below. Males / Females Tormod Caimbeul / Iseabail Chaimbeul lain Camshron / Mairead Chamshron Alasdair Grannd / Màiri Ghrannd |

Tapadh leat, Allen! I did not know that Mac was Gaelic. I knew it meant son of, but never knew its language origin. Interesting! |
Posted by: WizardofOwls 16-Apr-2005, 07:44 PM |
Hallo a ghràidh! Yup! Sure is! If I wanted to say "I have a son" I would say "Tha mac agam!", which literally means "There is a son at me." |

Hi Falieas and Cu Dubh! I love it that you guys are chatting here again! However could you do me a favor? This particular thread is for the beginners. Sometimes when there is a lot of advanced Gaelic, the beginners get a little overwhelmed and give up (as happened on the other thread we used here called Let's Try a Little Gaelic). Please chat here, but try to aim it toward the beginners. For the more advanced stuff, lets use the new thread I introduced today, Advanced Scottish Gaelic. Tapadh leibh, a chàirdean! Thanks my friends! |

But can understand if you want to talk more advanced without having to translate. Tha mi fhin gle mhath. Tha i breagha an-duigh, ach tha i teth I am very well. It is a lovely day, but it is hot. Faileas agus Cu Dubh, cait a bheil sibh a' fuireach ann a Scotland? Faileas and Cu Dubh, where do you live in Scotland? Tha mi a' fuireach an Arizona, USA I live in Arizona, USA Tha ceist agam. De the Beurla airson Sin e agus Agus ortsa? I have a question. What is English for I think I made a lot of mistakes. I also notice that some of you write Halo and other Hallo. Does it matter? You've done really well here, Rose! Sgrìobh thu: You wrote: Faileas agus Cu Dubh, cait a bheil sibh a' fuireach ann a Scotland? Here, I would say "ann an Alba" for "in Scotland" Sin e means That's it, or That's all. Agus ortsa means and to you too. Either Hallo or Halo is acceptable. Both are just attempts to render the English word "Hello" in Gaelic. So really just decide which one you like best and stick with it. To say I love Runrig, You could say "Tha gaol agam air Runrig." This roughly tranlates to "There is love at me for Runrig" 'Se do bheatha, a ghràidh! You're welcome dear! |

Madainn mhath, s h-uile duine!! Caimar a tha sibh, an-duigh? Tha mi glè sgith! Sorry I have been absent lately! I have been at a state bowling tournament. Not sure if I will ever recover! Speaking of bowling I have a little favor to ask all of you. My team has agreed to get new shirts next year and that, provided I translate it, we can put a gaelic phrase or saying on the back. I'm not sure if we are going to need a new sponsor next year or not so I'm just gathering anything that strikes my fancy! I would appreciate any input you could give! BTW, it can't be too vulgar! A little risque perhaps but nothing outright profane!! (One of the ladies has already said she doesn't trust me so I have to translate it and she will probably look it up anyway to make sure I was truthful!!) I would have written that in Gaelic but I would still be here next year trying to figure out how! I have to take my daughter to school now, so I'll be back to write more later!! Mar sin leibh an dràsda! |

Tha mi glè mhath tapadh leat, ciamar a tha thu fhèin an-diugh? Fine thanks, How are you today? Sorry, don't think i can be of much help comming up with a bowling slogan. Maybe others here would give you better feedback on this one. You could always use 'Pog mo thòin' on your shirts i suppose. |

Tha mise sgith cuideachd - I am tired as well. Cha robh mi a ' cadail cho math an oidhche sa chaidh - I didn't sleep too well last night. Ach tha mi gu sunndach - but i am happy :-). He, Rois, de mu dheidhin - naoi le aon bala - nine with one ball? Or is it too profane |

Cù- it doesn't necessarily have to be about bowling. Just something catchy and funny! De the Beurla airson 'Pog mo thòin'? I can't find it anywhere! Failaes- Tha mi duilich chan robh thu a' cadail glè mhath, agus tha mi gu sunndach tha thu sin gu sunndach! (does that make sense or did I do it wrong?) I don't think that's too profane!! In fact we are always talking about 'having to get our balls'! I'll add that to my list! Mòran taing!! Allen-It must be the weather making us all tired!! At the moment our team name is just the name of our sponsor 'Kearney Crete and Block'.(Really original, huh?) As for next year it all depends on the sponsor! Unless I can come up with something really cool!! Mar sin leibh an dràsda!! |

Hallo a h-uille duine! Ciamar a tha sibh? Hallo a Rois, tha mise gu math an diug ged tha robh mi ag obair - I am well although I was working. Tha mi ag obair ann am budh mor a tha seo ann am Port Righ - I am working in the big shob that is hier in Port Righ. Tha mi a' lionadh sgeilpeichean le rudan mar yoghurt, caise, im, bainne, feol agus biadh sa bhad - I am filling shelves with things like yoghurt, cheese, butter, meets and ready meals (microwave stuff hehe). *chuckles* obh obh! Cha measg thusa Scots le Gaidhlig! Never confuse Scots with Gaelic! s'ann an da rud a tha ann - there are two things! Scots is a term used for the auld leid the (old language) and for it's remaining dialect forms Lallans (lowlands) and Doric (Northeast) and both dialects are a language closely related to English. Gaelic has nothing to do with English at all, Gaelic is about 2000 years old, while English developed round about 900 years ago! |

Maddie! Thank you for your help. But I was not confused with Scots versus Gaelic. I know the difference between the two. I was simply trying to ask Cu Dubh if he would help me to learn the Auld Scots Leid as well. I have been studying it myself already, but thought he could help me more as he lives in Scotland as does Faileas. In my limited knowledge of the Gaidhlig, it just didn't come out right when I asked him. Thanks again. Hallo a h-uile duine! Cimar a tha sibh? Tha mi'n dochas gu bheil sibh gu math. I hope you are doing well. Tha e a' fas fadalach agus tha mi uabhasach sgith. It is growing late and I am terribly tired. Chi mi a-rithist thu a-maireach. I'll see you again tomorrow! Oidhche mhath. |

Hallo a h-uile duine! Tapadh leibh Cu Dubh agus Faileas airson an chuideachaich. Uill, 'S toigh leam a bhith a leughadh also. Hallo a Mhaddie! Hello Maddie! Tha ceist agam. I have a question. How long have you been studying Gaelic? What level would you consider yourself? Beginner? Intermediate? Advanced? What sources are you using for your studies? And I have one small suggestion...Instead of saying "Bha mi ag obair latha fada." I would say "Bha mi ag obair fad an latha. |
Posted by: WizardofOwls 25-Apr-2005, 07:38 PM
Feasgar math a Ròs! Good evening Rose! Ciamar a tha thu a-nochd? How are you tonight? Tha mi'n dochas gu bheil thu gu math! I hope that you are well! I have some suggestions for you! 'S toigh leam a bhith... I like... Let's see... you could use: a' peantadh dealbhan (painting pictures) a' thogail dealbhan (taking pictures) a' dèanamh dealbhan (drawing pictures) an t-Eadar-lìon (the Internet) Also, when listing a group of adjectives in Gaelic (like "it was warm and windy")you don't have to insert the word "and, " so you could just say "Tha i beagan blath gaothach an-diugh." For "What did you do today?" I would say "Dé rinn sibh an-diugh?" but I'm not terribly certain about that... best wait to see what Cù and Falieas say... Bha agam ri obair an-diugh bho seachd gu seachd... a-rithist! I had to work from 7 to 7... again! BLECH! |

Dè rinn sibh an-diugh? Tha sin ceart. - That's right. Uill, bha i brèagha ann an Alba an-dè... Well, it was lovely in Scotland yesterday... ...Griannach is blàth ...Sunny & warm Ach, cha do mhair sin fada But that didn't last long Tha an t-uisge ann an-diugh It's raining today agus tha i rud beag fuar a-muigh cuideachd and it's a wee bit cold out too Tha mi 'n dòchas gu bheil latha math agaibh. Hope you all have a good day. |

Cha robh mi ag obair an-diugh idir - I wasn't working today. Bha mi ag eirig as deidh deich uairean agus bha mi a' cluiche Scrabble leis an duine aig a bheil an taigh seo - I was getting up after ten and i was playing Scrabble with the man to whom the house belongs. An uairsin bha mi a' dol thairis a mharcaid - then i walked over the market (oh bligh me i was just looking at the stalls in the gathering hall lololol) Chi mi a-rithist sibh! I will see you again . |

"Bha mi ag obair fad an latha." I noticed that too late and forgot to correct myself, or to be more precise, once it came to my mind, I couldn't access the web site (from work). tha mi duilich! I am sorry. I consider myself as a beginner that's a fairly safe position, right? Like with English, I think I could consider myself as intermediate level. . Posted by: Maddie 27-Apr-2005, 05:29 PM
hehe! a Fheileas a ghraibh! nach eil thu gle shnog cho dhearg? Feileas my dear, aren't you very nice so red? RESOURCES: I think it depends on your learning style. I would strongly recommend to base your studies on more than one resource. First off one avoids getting bored and secondly you may get different perspectives. SOL is good but you have to like the cartoon style. It teaches a very modern Gaidhlig. Nothing can replace being there and have native speakers as teachers. |

Hallo a Mhaddie! I strongly agree with you. I have 9 sources (see my thread on Gaelic Texts) as well as 10 dictionaries and a phrase book. And I use nearly all of them for one thing or another. Chaidh mise agus mo nighean don bhùth an-dràsta, agus chunnaic sinn bogha frois anns an t-adhar! My daughter and I went to the store just now, and we saw a rainbow in the sky! Bha e glé bhreagha! Ach, tha mi a' smaoineachadh gu bheil i na cuideachadh mòr gus an cànan ionnsachadh. But I think that it's a great help towards learning the language. 'S fear thoigh leam na Litrichean! I like the Letters very much! Bidh mi gan leughadh gu tric. I read them often. Feuchaidh mi gan eadar-theangachadh! I try to translate them. Ach tha mi air an cùlaibh. (?) But I am behind. Tha mi air Litir 84. I am on Letter 84. Tha iad glé dhoirbh, ach tha e spòrs agus oidheachail. They are very difficult, but it is fun and educational. Solving them is like working a puzzle. Speaking of which, I received a notice today from a Gaelic mailing list that I subscribe to, that the BBC site and Roddy MacLean (sp?) are going to begin another Letter called the Litir Bheag for learners who are not advanced enough to tackle the other letters! Sounds very interesting! |

Here is the press release dealing with the new Letter for Learners (An Litir Bheag): An Litir Bheag: Great News for Gaelic Learners Gaelic Learners will soon have another resource to support them in their learning as broadcaster Roddy MacLean begins a new programme on BBC Radio nan Gaidheal. Roddy, better known by to many by his Gaelic name , Ruaraidh MacIlleathain, has been writing and broadcasting the acclaimed weekly Litir do Luchd-ionnsachaidh (Letter to Gaelic Learners) for six years. The programme has gained popularity across Scotland and in many other countries as learners access the material on the internet, listening to Roddy¹s voice while following the text of his letter (which also appears in three Scottish newspapers). Each Litir is accompanied by notes on grammar and idiom, as well as a vocabulary and the series is funded by the Gaelic Media Service. However many people who are at an earlier stage in their learning, have been requesting a similar, but simpler, programme. In response to this An Litir Bheag (³the little Letter²) will be broadcast on BBC Radio nan Gaidheal each week, beginning on Monday 2 May at 1900. ³There will be two Letters every week,² Roddy explained, ³for people at different stages of learning. An Litir Bheag will deal with the same subject as the regular Litir but in a simpler form, and I hope this will also encourage people to progress from one to the other over time. In a further development Deputy Director of the Gaelic Media Service, which funds both programmes, John Alex MacPherson, said ³ arrangements are also now in hand to publish a selection from previous series of Litir do Luchd-ionnsachaidh in book form with accompanying DVD. This, along with the continuing Litir and the new Litir Bheag, will be a valuable composite resource for Gaelic learners at different stages.² In addition to being broadcast by Radio nan Gàidheal (103.5-105 FM), An Litir Bheag can be read, and listened to, at any time, on the BBC¹s Gaelic website (www.bbc.co.uk/alba <http://www.bbc.co.uk/alba> ). The text will be there, along with guidance on words and phrases used in the Litir. Information for Editors : More information on An Litir Bheag : Roddy MacLean 01463 220954 Website information : Janet MacIver 0141 339 8844 Roddy is available for interview for radio, television or the print media in Gaelic or English. The text of Litir do Luchd-ionnsachaidh is published each week in the West Highland Free Press, The Stirling Observer and the Perthshire Advertiser. |

Great news Wizard. I didn't know about this and we don't have too long to wait either. I have a pocket sized mp3 player that holds about 60mb. I put Rory's letters onto it and take it everywhere i go. That way whenever i've got a spare moment i can listen to 'letter fo learners'. I get about 40 odd letters on it at a time. I've also put many of the letters onto CD so i can listen off-line at home. Chaidh sinn dhan taigh-dhealbh a-raoir agus chunnaic sinn 'The hitchhikers guide to the galaxy' We went to the cinema last night and we saw Hitchhikers..... Chan eil e dona It wasn't bad Ach tha an leabhar nas fheàrr But the book's better Fàilte air ais a Rois. Welcome back Rosie. |

Hallo a Chù! Hello Cù! Tha ceist bheag agam. I have a small question. I have a CD burner on my computer and would LOVE to download some of the letters to CD. How do you go about doing that? Can you download them straight from the site to CD? Or can you save them to your computer first? I've never tried to do it straight from the BBC site. |

Hallo a h-uile duine! Ciamar a tha sibh? Tapadh leibh airson all the help and the welcome back. Tha i griannach is blath an-duigh. It is sunny and warm today. I have been studying my Ghaidlig, but gosh! It is so hard for me to remember how to place things and where. Thanks for your patience and instructions, y'all. Tha mi 'n dochas gu bheil latha math agaibh. I hope you all have a good day. Beanneachd |
Posted by: Cù Dubh 01-May-2005, 03:12 AM |
Here's how i do it... Create a new folder somewhere on your computer. I put it on the desktop usually as it's easier to find. Go to the litir do luchd-ionnsachaidh page. Each of Rory's letters has the number of the letter, 'EIST' and MP3 beside it. RIGHT click the mouse over 'MP3' & select 'SAVE TARGET AS' when the grey box appears. Navigate the explorer to you've found the folder that you created earlier then click 'SAVE' After the download has finished the MP3 file of the selected letter should be in your new folder. I'd download about 20 letters and when they're all in you're folder you can burn them I use Nero, but you may have a different burner. Anyway i put about 20 on each CD in audio format. That way they'll play on any cd-player. But if you have a cd-player that plays mp3 files you'll get a lot more letters onto one disk by burning them on in mp3 format. Hope that help. Mar sin leibh. |

Halò Wizard, ciamar a tha thu?
Tha mi a' smaoineachadh gum biodh e na b' fheàrr a sgriobhadh- I think it would be better to write- Cha toigh leam a bhith a' geàrradh an fheòir After words like 'cutting', 'making', 'fixing', 'eating' etc. Any following definitive noun must go into the genitive. So you are literally saying 'cutting of the grass' - a' geàrradh an fheòir opening (of) the door - a' fosgladh an dorais Playing (of) the pipes - a' cluich na pioba Dè do bheachd a Fhaileas? Am bheil sin ceart? |

Dè mu dheidhinn... What about.... Dè tha sibh a' dèanamh aig an deireadh-seachdain?
In Gaelic there is no word for 'a' or 'an' so - Good night = Oidhche mhath A good night = Oidhche mhath
Uill, 's dòcha gum bi mi a' dol dhan amar-snàmh no rudeigin mar sin, leis a' chlann. Well, I'll probably be going to the swimming or something like that with the children. Ach a-nochd...Bidh mi a' dol dhan taigh-sheinnse airson deoch no dhà. But tonight i'll be going to the pub for a drink or two. Air ur slàinte!!! |

Feasgar math!! Sorry CelticRose!! I was very tired when I wrote that so I didn't translate it and I didn't put it all in Gàidhlig!! The word in brackets are the ones I didn't know how to say in Gàidhlig or didn't know if they even exist! It should read: It is too hot to sleep so I am here posting! The second line was supposed to read I miss you also but, alas, I don't know how also translates into Gàidhlig! So I improvised!! To lazy to figure it out!! The last one was a reply to Eiric and his loathing of Math!! I hate math myself. Can't seem to get after my daughter for her not-so-stellar performance in math this year! Ah well, the joys of parenting!!! Tha i uabhasach teth ann an Nebraska an-duigh....a-rithist!!! It is terribly hot in Nebraska today.....again!!! (So I know how you feel Ròs!) Unfortunately, I do not know how to say 'I'm glad you are back' or 'are you all going to see Star Wars' in Gàidhlig!! But it is unlikely that I will unless it comes to the drive in theater. The indoor theater is just too expensive!!! How about you? Oidhche mhath, a-huile duine!! Thanks for all the welcomes!! And I missed all of you terribly!! It's so good to be back! |

Bithidh mise gu cinnteach - I will surely Tha gaol agam air Star Wars. - I love star was. Chunnaic mi a h- uile filmichean - I saw all the film. Tha mi a' smaoinneachadh gur e "The Empire strikes back" a tha as fhearr - I think that The Empire Strikes back is the best one. Ach 's toigh leam na filmichean eile - but I like the other films. 's bochd sin nach robh iad a ' tionndadh sgeulachdan bho Darkover na filmichean - It is a shame that they didn't turn stories from Darkover into films. Bhiodh sin beachd, nach eil - That would be an idea, wouldn't it? Slainte! Gabhaidh mi dram Glean Fiadhaich Caoran a dh' aithghearr .... I will take a dram Glenn Fiddich Caoran soon ... |

Haidh Wizard. Ciamar a tha thu an-diugh?
Chan eil mi buileach cinnteach I'm not sure Ach tha mi a' smaoineachadh gum biodh e rud mar seo- But i think it would be something like this- Tha mi ag iarraidh 'fhaicinn no Tha mi airson 'fhaicinn Dè do bheachd a Fhaileas? |
Posted by: Cù Dubh 24-May-2005, 01:08 PM |
Oops - Rudeigin mar seo -Something like this Am bi thu a' dol a dh' fhaicinn Star Wars III ma-tha? Will you be going to see Star Wars III then? |
Posted by: Faileas 24-May-2005, 04:39 PM |
Tha mi a' smaoineachadh gur e "Tha mi airson Star Wars III fhaicinn" no "Tha mi ag iarraidh Star Wars III fhaicinn" a th' ann. - I think that its like above. Just remember that all statement of desire or intention require inversion and infinitive. Probably it's a bit much to explain here. But just that you others get an idea: Feumaidh mi/ Tha mi ag iarraidh/ B' fhearr leam/ S' toigh leam/ Bu choir dhomh I must/ I want/ i'd prefer/ I like/ I should These phrases require inversion plus the infinitive. The usual sentece structure is Verb subject object Here it is Verb object infinitive. Therefore: Tha mi airson film fhaicinn - I want film to see (which is the literal translation) another expample: Tha mi airson each a cheannaich - I want a horse to buy Tha mi airson oran a ghabhail - I want a song to take (remember ye take songs, poems, readings in gaidhlig ) I think the confusion would be perfect if I said that of couse the usual rules of lenition apply and the a of the infinitive falls away if the following verb starts with a vowel ... tha mi airson uisge beatha ol - I want whisky drink tha mi airson biadh ithe - I want food eat so better forget about it .... |
Posted by: Cù Dubh 25-May-2005, 02:05 AM
Madainn mhath Tapadh leat a Fhaileas. Just for the sake of curiosity how would you say-
I thought it would be- Tha mi airson 'fhaicinn Where 'it' is masculine & thus the possesive adjective 'a' drops out altogether or Tha mi airson a faicinn Where 'it' is feminine. |
Posted by: WizardofOwls 25-May-2005, 03:49 AM |

Tha mi a' smaoineachadh gu bheil tu ceart, a Chu I think that you are right, cu Thuirt deagh charaid as na Hearadh (An Rapaire) - A good friend from Harris said Bu math leam fhaicinn agus thuirt Den (Camha) - and Den said tha mi airson a fhaicinn agus chan eil mise buileach cinnteach mu dheidhinn sin. - and I am not completely sure about this ' s docha gur e - Probably it is "Tha mi airson a dh' fhaicinn" a th' ann (tha e nas fhasa a radh - it is easier to say) Deanaibh taghadh , hehe - take your pick chan eil iad fada as - they are all not far from the right thing |

INVERTED NOMINAL: *clears throat* *shows proudly off what she just learned* NEVER when a preposition is involved. e.g. dancing on a table, singing in public. But: I am afraid to sing a song. tha eagal orm oran a sheinn. 1) if the verb begins with a consonant => aspirate (of possible!) and precede with an 'a' 2) if the verb starts with a vowel => don't change 3) if the verb starts with 'f' followed by a vowel => aspirate 4) if the verb starts with 'f' vollowed by a consonant => aspirate and preceed with 'a' tha mi airson sgriobhadh I want to write tha mi airson litir a sgriobhadh I want to write a letter tha mi ag iarraigh òl I want to drink tha mi ag iarraigh uisge beatha òl I want to drink whisky (rule #2) 's toigh leam ceic ithe I like to eat cake 's fhearr dhomh ceit fhainaich I better ask a question *steps pf soap box* Well I know you all knew that, I didn't... |

Tha sin ceart , tms - That is right , I think Bha latha gu math caochlachadh air an t- Eilean -it was a very changing day on the Island (i. e. the weather changed a lot) grian, uisge, grian, uisge ... agus gaoth , gu nadarach - sun, rain, sun, rain ... and wind, of course tha sin a' ciallachadh - that means chan eil na cubhlagan a-muigh - there arent any midges out Chi mi a-rithist sibh - I will see you again |

Dh' ionnsaich mi am fear sin nuair a bha mi a' leughadh litir bheag 2 Hehe. I learned that one when i was reading little letter 2 Bu chòir dhuibh uile iad a leughadh You all should read them Tha mi a' smaoineachadh gu bheil iad math dhà-rireabh airson Gàidhlig ionnsachadh I think they are excellent for learning Gaelic Bha Ruairidh a-mach air an dà-shealladh agus taibhsean an t-seachdain seo Rory was on about the second-sight and Ghosts this week agus bha e glè innteaneach mar as trice and it was very interesting as usual Eadhon mur eil sibh gan tuigsinn... Hallo, a charadean! I am sorry I have not been around much to do the Gaelic and to write this in English, but I am short on time and trying to catch up. I have had a couple of crazy two weeks with everything happening from my car breaking down twice to hubby needing my help and preparing for our trip. Cu Dubh, I leave for Oregon this Sunday morning and won't be back till next Sunday. I will take pictures for you all so you can see what a beautiful state it is. I hear they have Scottish like weather. Will prepare me for when I get to your soil, eh? Thank you for the Litir beag site. I put it in my favorites so I can start working on that seriously when I get back. Allen has tried to start me in it, but I have failed him on that project. I am so sorry, Allen. You have worked so hard here and there. sorry it was not appreciated at the other place. Thanks too for the meaning of Sith. I had heard once it meant fairy, but when I saw it as a closing, I was confused. Cu Dubh and Faileas, what do you say in closing in Scotland to one another? We always say Have a good day, but interested in what you all say. Welcome Elizabeth. Nice to have you here and hope to see you participate with us. Hello Sonee. You are doing so well with the Gaidhlig. where is Maddie? You all take care and I will speak to you soon. |

Anns a' Ghalltachd canaidh duine rudeigin mar:- In the Lowlands people say things like:- Cheerie (Just like the Gaidhlig word Tioraidh) or Cheerio, See ye roon, Bye fur noo, aw the best Sorry to hear about your car. |

Feasgar math a chàirdean!! Caimar a tha sibh an-duigh? Ròs, as the saying goes....when it rains it pours!!! I have great sympathy and empathy for you!!! We are now down to one vehicle(the pick-up apparently needing a whole new motor) which is over 15 years old and on it's last legs as well!!! My washing machine went caput the other day. Which now makes 2 non working washers in my house!! A week or so ago my son shut of the fridge, twice, and I had to replace all my groceries, twice!! The ballast in my kitchen light fixture also broke and had to be replaced. It's just one thing after another!!! At least you're getting away from it all!! (Even if it IS with your MIL!!!LOL) I think I'm going to have to check out that Litre site!! Sounds pretty informative to me!! Have a great trip Ròs! We'll all miss you terribly here while you are gone!! Mar sin let |

I think that Summer has come at last. Bha mi a bruidhinn ri mo nighean a-raoir I was talking to my daughter last night Chan eil i ach ochd bliadhna a dh' aois She's eight agus on a tha i cho brèagha an-dràsda and since it is so nice at the moment dh' fhaighnich mi dhith gu dè bu toil leatha a dhèanamh... Halò a Stoirmeil. Math d' fhaicinn an-seo mu dheireadh. Hello Stoirmeil, Good to see you here at last. Agus tha Gàidhlig mhath agad cuideachd and you have good Gaelic too. Ach direach aon rud. Tha mi a' smaoineachadh gum biodh nas fheàrr a ràdh - 'Ann an Alba' But just one thing. I think it would be better to say - Ann an Alba - In Scotland Ach mar a chanadh mi riut, tha do Ghàidhlig gle mhàth But like i said to you, your Gaelic is very good Fàilte gus an snàithlean againn. Welcome to our thread.
I think it was ok sonee except it's not anns an gàrradh. It's Anns a' Ghàrradh. Like Stoirmeil you've just got a bit confused on which form of 'The' to use. Ann an Alba - In Scotland Ann am Baile - In a Town Ann am Bàta - On a Boat But Anns a' Bhaile - In The Town Anns a' Ghàrradh - In The Garden Anns a' Bhàta - On the Boat These lessons explain it better than i can:- http://www.taic.btinternet.co.uk/taic.htm http://www.taic.btinternet.co.uk/taic.htm Idon't know if these links will work, but it's lesson 5 & 6 of the Taic website anyway. Co- dhiu, mar a tha fios agaibh cumaidh mi suil aig an aite seo - but as you know, I keep an eye on this place agus bidh mi a' sgriobhadh uaireigin - and I write sometimes. Ach chunnaic mi gun do rinn Cu uabhasah math mar tidsear - but I saw that Cu did really well as tidsear Agus a-nis tha mi cho sgith ris a ' chu - and now I am as tired as a dog (wow grrrr.. ) Tha i tioram an seo air an eilean - It is dry here on the Island. Tapadh leat, a' Chù Dubh. Tha thu glé coibhneil, Thanks, Cù Dubh. You're very kind, agus tha thu tidsear glé mhath. and you're a good teacher. Seadh. . . Tha feadhainn eile gràmairean anns a' chìnn seò agam yeah. . . there are some other grammars in this noggin of mine agus tha iad a' feuchainn ri Gaidhlig. and they compete with gaelic. Ach tha Gaidhlig laoch glé làidir, agus tha i a' buannachd. But gaelic is a strong fighter, and it's winning. |

Tha mi air ais . I am back! Bha i seimh gu leor ann an Sassain ach tha mi toilichte a bhith air ais . It was relaxing enough in England but I am happy to be back. Chan eil gaidhlig ann idir - there is no gaidhlig there at all Bha an t-side math agus na daoine coibhneil - the weather was good and the people friendly. Dh' ith mi cus, hehe - I ate to much Stad sin aig caraid Bruis ann an Hull airson oidhche luain. - We stopped at a friends' of Bruce in Hull for Monday night. Bha ceol is ol ann (choimhead sinn aig bhideo Runrig .... ) - there was music and drinking ... Agus be draibh uabhasach snog a bh' ann tro Gleann Comhainn - and it was a very nice drive through Glen Coe. Stad sinn airson dealbhan a thogail - we stopped to take pictures. Cha robh uisge ann agus cha robh moran cuileagan ann - there was no rain there and there were not many midges ... Ach bha sibhse samhaich .... - But YOU were quiet .... Chan urrain dhomh sibh a leigeil nur aonar - I cannot leave you alone .. tsk ... |
