Background: A town in Leicestershire, England. The name signifies either the town on the hill, or, as Bailey says, the Bur-town, from the abundance of burs growing thereabouts. There are several places by this name in England. The derivation is generally from Old English burh + tūn fort + enclosure, settlement. A famous bearer of the surname was Sir Richard Burton (1821-1890), an explorer of Africa and Asia.

Variations: Burton, Borton, Bourton, Burtone, Bortune, Bortone.

This information is inaccurate. I have a pay slip from William the conquer army from a solider from Normandy France date from 1065 the year before invasion on england .than trace back to italy . I can document back to first use in mid 600 A.D. .i have a over 5000 hours of research in the just borton family .Burton is a mispeeling of the family name .the orignal family name is Bourtone . It been misspelled over the years becuase most could not read and right so the relied on other to spell by sounding out.
