HOW TO THROW A MEDIEVAL FEAST

Imagine that you are a master chef, working for a celebrity who wants to throw a wedding dinner for their daughter, with 200–300 guests. Next imagine that you have no electricity – no refrigerators, no freezers, no light – and no gas. Your suppliers have to get everything to you fresh, and you don’t want to use salted meat for this important occasion.

You are not sure exactly how much of any ingredient you will need until very close to the day. What’s more, the guests may stay on for several days. Among them there will be vegetarians or people needing special diets. To top this all off, the only transport available is horse and cart, so nothing can be brought at the last minute.

ANGLO-SAXON KINGDOMS

A new exhibition has opened at the British Library in London - "Anglo-Saxon Kingdoms: Art, Word, War." Billed as a "once in a generation exhibition," it promises to show off not only the exceptional collection in the British Library itself but also treasures now housed elsewhere - in England or further afield in Europe.

The premise of the show is the world of the Anglo-Saxons, a period of roughly 600 years, stretching from the early 5th century CE when Roman troops officially left the British Isles and groups of Germans began to move in, to about 1066 CE when Duke William of Normandy defeated King Harald II Godwinson and took the crown for himself.

Did you know we speak German?

The West Germanic languages include the three most widely spoken Germanic languages: English with around 360-400 million native speakers; German, with over 100 million native speakers; and Dutch, with 24 million native speakers.

Never knew that English was actually German? Read more from Why English is a Germanic Language.

Outlaw King is now playing on Netflix, so be sure to grab a private viewing!

So from what I understand the original movie is 4 hours long and it has been trimmed down for the Toronto Film Festival and then trimmed down again for Netflix to about 1 hour 37 minutes.

I really hope they release the full directors cut of the movie.

In other news about the movie, we heard from Tu-Bardh from Clanadonia tonight and he provided us with this link from Edinburgh Castle where they performed for the Scottish First Minister at the premier and Chris Pine. Thank you Tu-Bardh for that link!

OUTLANDER SEASON FOUR

All rejoice! Season Four of Outlander has finally arrived and is available on Starz and many streaming services.

The plot of the series will reportedly follow the fourth book in Gabaldon's Outlander saga. Per the author's website, the novel follows Claire, Jamie, and his nephew Ian as they "seek to find a place for themselves in the colony of North Carolina, treading a dangerous line between Governor Tryon’s patronage and Claire’s knowledge of the brewing revolution in America."

First impressions of episode one are refreshing, intense and exciting as the revolutionary war looms several years ahead and Claire and Jamie arrive in Colonial America. If you have not been watching this series, you are missing one of the best series on Scottish Culture and a Love story to boot. A word of warning if you have young children in the house, keep the clicker handy as there are numerous steamy scenes throughout the serious.

Our Favorite scene of episode one is definitely the colonial tavern scene where a fellow Scotsman starts singing a Gaelic song after his friend was killed. Eventually the whole tavern joins in and it is obviously they are all recent immigrants from Scotland.

All in all a great start to Season 4 and looking forward to the rest of the series through the next several months.

Ushering in a new generation of passionate folk performers - House of Hamill is a music project, which was started by Rose Balding and Brian Buchanan, two musicians who share a passion for timeless folk music, and more. The origins of this project are all about serendipitous circumstances, which allowed something truly magical to happen. The pair met up roughly 10 years ago, and their immediate kinship was apparent from day one. Rose and Brian were already active within the music scene, respectively as a member of Burning Bridget Cleary and Enter The Haggis. After crossing paths on and off for a while, Rose and Brian eventually became musical collaborators in 2014...

SALEM WITCH HOUSE

Salem is a Massachusetts harbor town that conjures up many images of dark Autumn evenings, rustling leaves, howling winds and of the sordid tales of Witch Trials.

As the only remaining original house from the Salem Witch Trials era, the Witch House is still standing in Salem today and there have been many reports of cold spots, voices and hauntings. Some might point to the owner of the house, Judge Jonathan Corwin, who sent 19 people to the gallows accused of Witch Craft. But others say it could be the tragic deaths that fell upon many of the young Corwin children of the house. Eight of their ten children died before adulthood and by 1710 both the Judge, his wife and his entire family were deceased.

Historic Salem contains a wealth of locations to visit including the house of the Seven Gables and the Burying Point where you can visit many a grave from the 1600s including those involved in the Witch Trials.

I know it's early, but we've got some great news on our "Celtic Christmas" stream.

First, we have made some changes and added some brand new sound effects to the stream this Christmas. Grandfather clocks, snow storms and crackling fires to name a few which will interlude with the music.

Second, we have added a number of new songs received from Artists this year as well as parsed our playlist focusing on a traditional sound that will delight any Christmas lover.

Finally, we have moved the stream to TorontoCast and now have available 500 listener slots, so hopefully this year we will not run out of connections (we were limited to 100).

Certainly is an amazing story. To think all of those years just laying in the mud until one little girl from American (half Swedish) decides to find it.

Wondering if they will keep it or are they required to turn over to the government of Sweden?

8 Year old Swedish American Girl

finds 1,500 year old Viking Sword!

Swedish-American girl Saga Vanecek has made headlines in Sweden and abroad after she pulled a 1,500-year-old sword from the waters of Vidöstern Lake during a summer vacation, which her family spent at their summer home there.

Due to a drought, the water level of the lake was unusually low. The Vaneceks placed a buoy in the waters near their house to warn boats about a concrete slab under the water, and eventually asked Saga to retrieve it, which took her longer time than they expected. However, the father didn’t suspect at first what kept her in the water.

Sex, Mischief And Witches: Dark Side Of

Life Discovered In A Medieval Oxford Nunnery

Archaeologists excavating a medieval Benedictine nunnery in Oxford have shed light on the darker side of convent life.

The excavation of the Littlemore Priory, which was founded in 1110 and dissolved in 1525, has revealed nearly 100 skeletons of men, women and children.

Among these are a series of “very unusual burials”, including the remains of a woman buried in the face-down position.

Team leader Paul Murray of John Moore Heritage Services, said in a statement: “This was perhaps a penitential act to atone for their sins or the sins of their families. Her lower legs had been truncated by the later internment of an infant.”

Speaking to the BBC, Murray added: “It’s unusual for someone so young to be buried within the church. And sometimes women found in prone positions are considered to be witches.”

Other remains revealed a victim who was the victim of a blunt force trauma to the back of the head, a stillborn child and a leper.

Background: The Flood name was originally Fludd or Floyd. The English name Floyd is the same as the Welsh Llwyd (or clwyd), meaning brown, gray, hoary or the Welsh Lloyd and Lhuyd, meaning gray or brown. The Irish surname Floyd was originally from the Gaelic McTuile, O Maoltuile, or Mac Maoltuile. Tuile meant ‘flood’ and in Ireland, Tully and Flood were interchangeable. The surname Lloyd has its home in North and South Wales; but it is frequently found in Shropshire, Hereford, and Monmouth, England.

Variations: Floyd, Floyde, Flude, Flood, Floode, Lloyd, Llwyd, Lloid, Loyd, Loid, Lwyd, Tully, MacTully, Talley, Tally.

Background: This Scottish name is habitational from a place in the parish of Gamrie, near Banff. The place is situated on a headland affording some sheltered anchorage, and is said to get its name from Middle English true hope; however, when first recorded in 1296 it already appears as Trup, so it is more likely to be of the same origin as Thorpe and other names of this origin.

Variations: Troup, Tromp, Trout, Troop, Tropp, Troy, Troupe, Troia, Trapp, Topp, Grof, Gropp, Roup, Groat, Troup, Grosh, Rous, Stoup, Coup, Dropp.

I think one of the issues with the App is it is required that you log-in to the App. For this, you can manually setup an account or you can use Facebook.

We used Facebook to register and login to test it recently on an iPhone 8 Plus. One thing it did require, even with the Facebook register, is an email address. It popped up asking to enter an email address.

After that it did let us login and use the App.

If anyone has issues logging in, just use our contact form and we can either 1) Update your password or 2) Preregister an account for you.

The App is supported by our Celtic Radio Founder's and yearly fund raising event, so we have a basic and premium part of the App which provides a good way to support Celtic Radio.
