While researching the family tree, I ran across this bit of family history. George and Matthew Wallace were brothers who came to this country from Ireland in the 1780s (I am descended from both of them; cousins marrying and all that). They were very strict, psalm singing Presbyterian Ulster Scots. So, it was quite a family scandal when their brother John married an Irish Catholic girl named Catie Sullivan. John and Catie were very happy despite the disapproval from both families. They had two children and were on their way to "happily ever after" when John became ill and died at a still young age. George and Matthew decided that they must save their brother's children from the Papists. So when they left for America, they took John's children with them (some say kidnapped them). Catie Sullivan Wallace and her children never saw one another again.
An interesting if sad bit of family history. But were the fates through with this story? You be the judge. Last year my younger son Iain (Scots Gaelic for John) got married. His bride? A beautiful Irish Catholic lass named Katie Sullivan. Coincidence? Fate? Poetic "justice"? Or just the wheel turning full circle?
