What are some of your favorite childhood travel memories?

Mine:

1. Going to Disney World.

2. When we'd go to visit my relatives in Iowa, there used to be this place on I-74 just outside of Davenport, just before it merged with I-80. It wasn't a truck stop, but it was a combination gas station, gift shop and restaurant. It was the kind of business that sprung up along interstates in the mid-1950's to early 1960's. Anyway, this place had the best fried chicken.

3. When we'd go to visit my grandma in Indianola, Iowa, a town about 15 miles south of Des Moines, there used to be this house about five miles outside of Indianola. On one side of the house was this giant Mickey Mouse. We called that house the Mickey Mouse house. My sister and I would get excited because A. Mickey is a familiar sight to all generations, and B. we knew we weren't that far from Grandma's. Sadly, it's been gone for years sadangel.gif .

4. Sometimes on our trips to Iowa and elsewhere, we'd stop and eat at this chain of restaurants called Country Kitchen. I don't know if they do this anymore, but they used to give kids wooden coins that could be used to purchase little trinkets.

May her lakes and rivers bless you.
May the luck of the Irish enfold you.
May the blessings of Saint Patrick behold you.

One summer when I was 12, we decided to visit family in Oregon (which is a long trip coming from Michigan). We drove through all the northern states stopping at important places like Mount Rushmore and we drove through the Rockys which were beautiful. On the way home we decided to go through the southern states. It was a long trip but it was great to experience. Another year we did the same thing but we visited family in California.
