QUOTE (Knightly Knight @ May 27 2003, 11:41 PM)
Hi all Im back.

Cabbagehome thanks for the Hello

Catriona. Please accept my apologies if I have offened you. I do agree many people do many different things for many different reasons. After reading your second post I see where I erred. I mistook your intent.

Please tell me if this what you are saying Many different reasons motivated people to leave Scotland, not only clearances They may have had an idea or dream for something different for them and their families. No one can point at any ONE Reason. People in many coountries do this today for various reasons

I know of many people who fought for a freedom in their own country and won it but moved to my country FOR DIFFERENT REASONS. I have worked with Russians, Bosnians, Eritreans, Ethiopians. Again many different reasons brought them here. For some it was a thought of a better life. For some it was to be with loved ones. For some it was because of political persecution
Inside my own country people move from location to location for different reason and it would be silly to say they they all moved for the same reason.

When I first read your post, I (mistakenly) though you were saying the clearances was a very minor part of the history of that country. I leave pronouncing my apologies.

I hope I can also leave as your friend

Yes, you now understand exactly what I was trying to say! biggrin.gif

No apology was necessary, but I thank you for it smile.gif

I am a keen student of the history of my country - but, as I said earlier in this thread - I am not infallible - and my views are coloured by my studies - however, because I have access to the great libraries of Scottish history, I feel that if I don't know something - I can make a fair stab at trying to find out an answer to a question.

As I have also stated on other threads, my family is lucky.... we were in the enviable position of not having to leave our country (for whatever reason, social or economic), of marrying into local families and so our family history is well documented and the local graveyards are filled with previous generations. I know that many citizens of other nations with Scottish ancestry are often frustrated because the lack of evidence re their forebears and the areas of Scotland from where they emigrated, means it is difficult to trace back to a specific area.

Best wishes
Catriona

Catriona

Thank You for your kind words. You spoke well about the frustration of those trying to find ancestors. Many lines of my family stop cold. The Scottish Trail stops cold because of a name change the elder family members cant remember or didnt ever rightly know. My Osage line Stops because there wasn't a written language among the American Indians. My Great Grand Mothers first mention came from a mention at a reservation. and of course she married my great- grandfather lol The Cherokee did develop a written language to help keep track of contracts. I believe the language was called " talking leaves" I believe there were approximately 44 characters.

The frustration runs very deep, some days I can handle it fine and just chalk it up to" Well life is tough and you cant get all the answers. But sometimes I spend many hours sorting fact from fiction with our family. I was 13 before i found out my father had a brother whom died before my father was born. a bit older before i found he had a sister and 47 when I found out by a geanologist across the country he had a sister who died at two weeks

If my hair werent starting to come out on its own Id like to help it myself. Just going back ONE generation in my family is like trying to pour concrete while a flood is happening.

I admire those who actually know who is who, the where, when, how and why of their families. You are very fortunate Catriona in getting to have a redorded history. Enjoy

C'yall later

Ja, I too have the problem of trying to trace lineage.

I am adopted. Making all such tracings all but impossible.

I only found out that I have Scottish and Irish (and German and English) blood in there. I only found this out long after I gained my interest in Scottish music, culture, history.

Catriona, thank you for your information. It is good to hear from someone who has lived it all their lives. I am a history buff, and am constantly frusterated to find out history is not as it has been taught to me, or as the general referneces say it was. It is so interesting to find out the deeper motivations, causes, effects, goings on of things. Though when you get to that level..there is SO much history to learn! I can never learn enough :( Not enough time.

And so I must focus where I can. And Scotland has received a great deal of that focus.

Thank you for being willing to answer questions.

You are very welcome, Pneumandro - but no-one asks any questions!

If you have any, please ask..... I may not be able to answer straight away, but I will certainly try to get an answer to any query you may have.
