People are out on the streets behind the wheel as I write this that are higher than kites on pot and it is illegal. Why not put some controls on the sale of weed and put the illegal sellers of it out of business.
And as someone said earlier in this thread make it legal and it might lose some of it's mystery and appeal.
People break the law because their told they can't do something allow them to do it and the challenge is gone.

But it is illegal to kill another person and people don't do that just because it is illegal. there are lots of things illegal that people do not do.
(*maryellen's disclaimer* I am always addressing the topic, not the person or any group. Some people are getting way too personal in other threads.)

But there is a difference as killing effects another persons right to life. How does someone smoking a joint effect you? How does someone drinkg alcohol effect you?
As I said previously, it affects everyone when people start doing that and then they get into their car. Then, they kill people. It has happened many times.

What we're talking about is the largest illegal drug trade in the US out of business by hitting them where it hurts the most-the pocketbook. With their customers flocking to places to buy it legally, they will have two choices: get out or go legit. When the US repealed Prohibition, the bootleggers were out of business inside of six months.
But how about the people who run from the law afraid to get caught with drugs? I have been watching this cops show recently and how many high speed chases end up killing people because a person runs afraid to get caught with the stuff? Legalize it and you might cut down on some of the highspeed killer chases.

The marijuana laws in Canada are testing the waters of decriminalization (not legalization) which means that it isn't a crime to have a small quantity for personal use and the use of marijuana for medical reasons is legal.
The problems with legalization is that the government wants to take over the supply to those who need it for medical reasons and we all know what happens when government gets involved. After a couple of million dollars to create a grow operation, the government finally managed to get some of the plants to grow. Those who bought the marijuana ended up trying to return their purchase due to the inferior quality. The government at the same time is burning seized plants from illegal growers that know what they are doing.
Another problem as stated by the police is that now that there is a law stating how much a person can have in his or her posession, the police don't have any flexibility in how they deal with individual cases. In most cases in Canada, they would let people off when they were picked up with small quantities.
