I just learned there is going to be a massive Scottish Festival in Washington D.C. come June 2003. Presented by the Smithsonian institute, funding for this Festival is coming from a number of different sources. There are a number of notable people on the festival board from Scotland such as Sean Connery and others! This will build upon the highly successful New York Tartan day 2002, which gathered together 10,000 pipers.

There is even some talk that it might attract up to 1 million people. The event is going to run for a week in June and a week in July. I plan on posting a news article on our front page sometime this week with links to read about all the excitement. I think I might be planning a trip to D.C come this summer! :)

I just read about it and it sounds like it might be a good time.  I participated in the Tunes of Glory in New York and what an experience.

Met pipers from all over the world.  It was said that all 50 states as well as 26 countries were represented.

Hope that DC would be the same.  If I can get some time I might try to make it down there.

MacFive
You mentioned Sean Connery.....  there is a real backlash against Sean in Scotland now...

He lives in Bermuda and Spain - only visits Scotland on rare occasions as he is worried about being assessed for taxes...  :rolleyes   He was vociferous about the English - and then accepted a knighthood via the parliamentary system here....  He makes pronouncements about Scotland, but doesn't have the courage of his convictions to live here....  :(

He admits to beating his wife in the past.....  All I can say is........ I would not choose him as a representative of my country!

I know his brother.... a nice man....

Hi Cabbagehome
Sorry.......  didn't mean to burst your bubble re Sean...  ::confused  who, incidentally is really called Tommy - oops, is that another bubble burst?  :D

I just find it funny that someone who is almost a 'professional' Scot should spend so little time in his own country....   :rolleyes Granted he gives funds (not much, in view of his huge income) to certain Scottish groups - the education one is great - he also gives money to the SNP.

His acceptance of a UK Knighthood also leaves a bit of a bad taste as he has expressed his forthright views on the role that the UK parliament has played and continue to play, in Scotland.

Catriona,

Thanks for posting this information. I think it holds well to get this sort of stuff out there. Because there is so little information reported on in the States about things like this, we would not normally know.

You are right about that Knighthood part. If someone where really behind Scottish Independence and such, would they accept knighthood from an English Queen?

Well, Sean Connery also missed out on a great opportunity. From what I understand, he was offered the role as Gandoff in Lord of the Rings.

Do you personally know his brother?

Ahem.....  she is the Queen of Scotland, too, MacFive!

The Lion Rampant, which so many Americans seem to use at their Games is her personal standard - it should only be flown when the Queen is present..  :D

Still, I don't suppose she's going to make too much fuss about foreigners misusing her standard, do you?   :rolleyes  :D  :)

As for being an "English Queen" she's actually German, one reason why the Welsh Coat of arms bears the legend "Ich Dein" (I Serve -In German). And by the way her husband, the Duke of Edinburgh is a Greek prince.

Additionaly our passports carry the coat of arms with the phrases "Honi soit qui mal y Pense" and "Dieu et Mon Droit" both of which date back to the Norman (French) aristocracy which ruled Britain from 1066.

Our European history cannot be divvied up into neat little piles. Welsh ancestory is much more to do with the Kurds and Kabyles in North Africa than many might imagine. And the Scots and the Irish also have their European heritage. The Celts were the "Native American" tribes of Europe before the Roman "Cowboys" came along. Luckily for us the Romans were more civilised than we were when we invaded North America (For which I ,for one, feel ashamed).

MacFive - I should have made myself clear..... It was not that he attended an investiture by the Queen, but that rather, as a staunch supporter of the SNP, he then accepted an honour for which he was proposed by the Prime Minister, ie a Labour party member  :D   Still, it's awfae nice tae see Tommy's principles ur nae mair nor skin deep, richt enuf!

I am in no way a monarchist :(  - but the British Royal Family, through the present Queen's mother - has a fair proportion of Scottish blood.  Dare I say it....  perhaps more than some of the people who claim Scots ancestry, from perhaps one ancestor 6 or 8 generations ago?   :D  :D  :D  :D

PS that is certainly not a 'dig' at you Cabbagehome - I know nothing of your ancestry!  :D

Yes, I think if you look 8 generations back at people claiming Scots heritage, their genetic make-up may not even resemble Scottish or Irish. However, there is a direct link of DNA that is passed down from father to father to father and from mother to mother to mother...but I am not going to go there.

However, there are some things to consider and I must give my family as an example. Hugh MacArthur, my direct ancestor, came from Scotland to Prince Edward Island in the 1770's. Consider many many scots came to Prince Edward Island during this period and inter-married with other Scottish immigrants. Look at some of the wives my great great, et.c grandfathers took - McDougal, Campbell, etc.

Then along comes me, not really caring and evening knowing about my heritage and without knowing about all of this, I marry a girl with alot of Scottish blood in her - she did not even know about - well, turns out her grandparents where from Scotland - Aitkens. All of our kids have fair complexions, blue eyes and light air (atleast the last 2!;).

So, my point is that even though I am 7th or 8th generation removed from when my ancestor immigrated from Scotland to North America, it is still in my blood and my kids blood. I would say atleast 50% if not even more. In fact, I would contribute their musical talent (which has been passed down from generation to generation in my family) to the fact that MacArthurs were famous pipers in Scotland, as honary pipers to the MacDonalds, etc., etc.

And there are many Canadians, Australians, New Zealanders, South Africans who can say that too, Paul, as well as Americans. It is not to them that I aim my remarks.  I have been astounded to find on the net that there are many people who make statements of a country that about which they have little or little personal knowledge, and all on the strength of one far removed ancestor  :)

I would NEVER presume to make statements re the American system of Government - it's a  matter for the citizens of the USA - not me .....  I may deplore GW Bush and some of the global decisions he makes - and I feel free to comment upon those decisions - after all, some of them intimately affect the citizens of the UK...  BUT....   what he and the elected government decide to do internally.....  well, it's not my business.

I am a fervent anti-monarchist - but snide comments about the Queen etc irritate me because she IS the Queen of Scotland....   and has more than a little Scottish blood via her mother.  She is also the Queen of Canada - and one of the nicest people I know on the net is a Canadian/Scot who is a fervent monarchist - we have had some fair old 'stooshies' about it, I can assure you!  :D

Right.... that's me off my soap box now  :D

No, please do stay on your soapbox! There is alot of mis-information out there and to be honest with you I had no idea that the Queen was also the Queen of Scotland until I actually started to do some reading on the subject.

Well I am not going to comment on my thoughts about G.W., but it does seem that he has united the country (U.S.) behind his mandate - atleast the voters seem to have. Regardless of what you think of him, I believe that alot of people under-estimated what he could accomplish - especially with the election woes in Florida. He has done what no sitting president has done since 1934, actually increase his party's seats in the Senate and in Congress.

Now with control of the 3 branches of the Federal Government alot is expected. I don't think the voters will be to happy next time if some major changes in Gov't and this war on Terrorism do not occur.

I for one would like to see  Bush totally overall the School system. I can tell you from personal experience that the School system is failing America. So much potential in students is often wasted by some Teachers more concerned with Tenure or politics.

Now who is on their soapbox?
