Celtic Radio Community > Kirk and Chapel > Cs Lewis & The New Narnia Movie

Posted by: Siobhan Blues 29-Jul-2005, 01:15 PM
Okay I must say right away that I am a huge CS Lewis fan but its of his Christian faith & spirituality writings not the Narnia books. But I swear I keep seeing these ads for the Chronicles of Narnia movie, and I'm remembering what I did like about 'The Lion The Witch and the Wardrobe' and doggone but I think I'm going to read the whole series this time and see what the hubbub is about.

wink.gif What do y'all think about the Narnia books?

Man, it's been ages since I read any of those books. I'm excited to see the movie because I do remember enjoying the story...and I'm lazy and have other books I want to read.

I saw an animated version of the TLTWATW when I was a kid, and read the book, but never read any of the others. I loved it and I hope the new movie is as good as the cartoon was!

I remember reading The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe when I was little...actually bought it and The Magician's Nephew (which is actually the first book of the series) and haven't gotten too far because like CelticCoalition I've been distracted by reading other things.

Namely, the new Harry Potter book!

It has been a few years at least since I picked up "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe", yet it conjures fond memories of far away lands full of adventure and mystery. A balance between Harry Potter and LOTR. I am anxious to see the movie, they had better do it justice!

*chuckling*.... i find it amazing that people are still saying the books are in the wrong order........... gee c.s. lewis was clever enough to write them but not smart enough to know which order they should be in........?? rolleyes.gif

Oh I love all of the chronicles of narnia books. I actually just bought a new set. I saw the cartoon and thought it was funny. I saw the PBS versions of the books and thought it was funny. i am excited about the movies that are coming out. A little worried of course cause we don't know how they're going to interpret them...ya same feelings as when we heard the LOTR was being turned into a movie. Anyway does anyone know who the director of these movies is?

I always forget too that TLTW&TW isn't the first... that is odd, I wonder why its the most well-known one. Come to think of it, I do believe I read the Magician's Nephew awhile back. Has anyone read the whole series, and what do you think of them as a series - do we need to read the whole set to enjoy the experience fully, or are particular books within the series better than others?

Well -- looks like I'm in good company here. rolleyes.gif Children's literature is really one of my big things, but for some reason I never read this series, even though Lewis and Tolkien were close friends and colleagues, and I am the consummate Tolkien devotee. I think I heard once it was a little pedantic in the way it puts out the theological themes. (Shame on me for not finding out for myself, of course.)

Of course The Chronicles of Narnia is now on my short list. . . what with the film coming out. I actually located an edition with all of it in one big volume (nice for dragging around and getting it really doggy reading under trees smile.gif ). I have read that they are taking the film extremely seriously for theme, and the trailers I have seen show that they are using the same highly skilled, devoted and slightly mad production and CG animation crew Peter Jackson used for the LotR films, as well as the incomparable New Zealand landscape, so it will probably be outstanding.

I really hope some discussion of the books gets going here. I think I will pick up my big fat seven-in-one volume this week and jump in.

regarding the order of narnian history and the order of publication i found this
intresting link......

http://www.factmonster.com/spot/narnia-books.html

my set has "the lion the witch and the wardrobe" as book one.....
that is the order i read them.... the magicians nephew being a "flashback"
but this link has what cs lewis said (supposedly) and now i find they are being publised in narnian history order..... rather than the publising date....... intresting.......

I was working in my church library last evening, and as it was quiet I began re-reading 'The Magicians Nephew' and realized that I have read it before. Must have been a very long time ago! I wanted to see the connection between it and TLTW&TW and still will read it over again just out of curiosity.

Thanks for that link, by the way!

I just read 'The Magicians Nephew' this week and enjoyed it so much - it has a fair bit of humor that adults will enjoy, or I did anyway. And I had never read the whole book before, but see now that it's a good idea to read it before the 'Wardrobe' one. And with the film coming out soon, I'm glad I read the 'Nephew' book because it explains some things and sets the story in motion.

I will definately be there!

My favorite book in the series is the Horse and His Boy. If TLTWATW movie is good I hope they will make this book into a movie.

I have not read that one! Does it continue one of the children's stories or is it a new character?

I haven't noticed this thread till now and am glad I have. Narnia is a great series. It has such a clear Christian message and yet it's full of imagination which appeals to both children and adults. It's trlanslated into Japanese too. I read the series in English as an adult. My favorite book is Silver Chair. I still remember the excitment when Jill and others had to decide whether to believe the prince and release him or not.

I hardly ever go to a movie but I am going to watch Narnia for sure. The boy who plays Edmund looks so Celtic. Does anyone know his origin?

The Horse and His Boy introduces new characters, but the original children as grown-up royalty appear at the end. I like that particular story quite a bit.

Read the series many years ago and thoroughly enjoyed them all. Voyage of the Dawn Treader was especially good, but there's not a bad one in the bunch.

I am hoping to see the movie with my family tonight! I can't wait! biggrin.gif

My sister loaned me her copy of the BBC version of TLTWATW. It was pretty good, but I hope the new movie is MUCH better! The graphics were poor, and the woman who played the White Witch was a very bad actress! I guess she was overplaying her role to try to look mean for the kids, but it just didn't work for me. I relaize that it was made for TV, and probably had a low budget, and that it was made back in the (80s? 90s?) and that graphics weren't as good then, but I think it could have been done better.

Does anyone remember an animated version of the story that came out either in the 70s or 80s? I remember seeing it as a kid, but can't find it anywhere now.

Wel, I finally got to watch Narnia today! It was the second movie I've ever watched in the last 20 years and was worth every penny! (The other was King Arthur which wasn't so good.) Special effects were put to great use and the little actors were amazing. Anyone else have any comments? Wizard, what did you think?

By the way, can't Americans watch movies without eating popcorns? The sound of the multitude munching on them was rather distracting!

It's almost as if the munching is crucial to enjoying the film! I agree, its quite distracting... actually I don't even buy popcorn when I'm planning on really enjoying a movie, like when I saw the LotR films I got so into them that I would have spilled any popcorn I was holding anyway.

Well I FINALLY saw Narnia - didn't munch a thing either - and liked it very much! What a good job they did of bringing the book to the big screen. Aslan is so magnificent, the Witch is genuinely nasty but stupid, and the kids were wonderful!!

It has been a number of years, but I enjoyed the book. I, too, remember the animated version many a moons ago and thought it was great. I have been told, however, there is a slight difference from the series, but that's Hollywood for yeah. I am thinking about picking up the books again and seeing the movie at some point.

Unfortunately, I have not yet been able to see it! sad.gif But guess who will be first in line to buy the DVD when it goes on sale! biggrin.gif

I don't know. In America, movies and popcorn just seem to go hand in hand! I can go out to a restaurant and eat a huge meal, then go to a movie and STILL have to have popcorn! Don't know why....

Posted by: Siobhan Blues 23-Feb-2006, 04:36 PM
Narnia is coming out on DVD in just a few weeks, isn't it?? I thought we'd have to wait til the end of the year. That's going to be nice, having it in our collection soon.
