After spending time in a number of other areas, I decided to get down to serious business. Fishing. Many people enjoy recreational fishing. Growing up in Idaho, fishing was more on the line of a religion. Winer, Summer, Spring, Fall. There was ALWAYS somewhere they were biting. How do YOU feel about the subject. What techniques do YOU use to catch them? What do you do with them AFTER you catch them. What kind of fishies do you like? Personally I am pretty much of a pure trout person. I normally use a spinning rig, even when fly fishing. My little sister has offered to teach me fly fishing. (she is expert). We will see. biggrin.gif

Thank you maisky for starting this subject. As a matter of fact, I was just talking to my wife about this yesterday.

I, myself, am mostly a Fly Fisherman. I do on occasion use my 7 1/2 foot ultralight spinning outfit with some jigs that I tie but mostly Fly Fishing.

I started Fly Fishing back in 1975 while I was up in Michigan. My Wife's uncle (at that time she was just my girlfriend (steady)) handed me his Fly Rod and told me if i had fun catching Bluegills then I would have a Blast catching them with a Fly Rod. He was Right. I had so much fun with it, I started working very hard learning the practice.

While now my favorite fish I like to fish for are Brown Trout and Rainbows, I do fish for other fish too.

I tie my own flies and mostly use nymphs, wet flies and streamers. I did manage to catch my first Trout on a dry fly this year and for those who know anything about flyfishing, how much a thrill it is to see the Trout come up and take you fly.

Mostly all I do is Catch and Release but I do practice Selective Harvest. And that is only when I am HUNGRY for fish.

I have taught several people how to Flyfish and it is exciting to see them when they catch their first fish.

I will most definitely post here more often with some of my stories and techniques.

I started fishing at a very early age. My dad put a pole in my hands at about age 4. We went on family camping, fishing trips frequently. Fishing on the ranch was easy to come by, as well. Mostly it was rainbow, brook and cutthroat (native) species. Later on, while in Wyoming I got to catch Browns and lake trout.

Up until the last few years, the pattern was catch-and-eat. It wasn't until just the last few years that I took up catch-and-release. At JaneyMae's place, the trout at too big to make the best eating. For eating I prefer high mountain lake water (very cold). There the fish have a lot of fresh water shrimp in the summer, resulting in bright orange flesh and making them VERY tasty. Trout should be eaten withing a few hours of catching them, so when I say catch-and-eat, I mean it literally, sometimes building a small fire by where I am fishing and cooking them right there.

For the really big trout, catch and release is best. Poor JaneyMae has to deal with a "slot" limit. She can't keep anything under 16 inches long. That's ok, because the trout I have caught there (landed) were mostly bigger than that. The ones that I wasn't able to land (6 lb leader) were often MUCH bigger. Her trout are rainbow, brown, native's and Hybrids of those. The Hybrids are the most active. There are also lake trout upstream in the lake. You would have to ask JaneyMae WHERE this is. I am not permitted to tell. angel_not.gif

As for HOW I fish, I have used most techniques other than a net. Bait, lures, flys and tickling. The last is fun in the little feeder streams into the high lakes and streams: not tackle, just hands.

WooHoo, big brother! Finally a topic I can really get excited about!!! Did I tell you that as of Jan. 1 the river is open year round? They are trying to thin out the rainbows and hybrids. You can keep those but have to release the cutthroats. If I can figure out how to get through the snow with my bum knee I'm going snowfly fishing. Can hardly wait.

Like my brother, I've had a fishing pole in my hand as long as I can remember. My children are the same way but don't have the fanaticism that I do for the sport. My grandbabies do tho. Tabitha loves to fish and eat what she catches. This is good.

I learned to fly fish as an adult, used to tie my own flies but haven't in a while. I worm fish in the spring before the trout are feeding on the surface or on wet flies. I cut the hook to free them so they aren't hurt. The hook disolves in a few hours. If I keep putting the fish back then I can catch them again.

I've mounted one, it is a cutthrout about 7 3/4 pounds and 28 inches long. I've caught a couple larger since but hate to kill the big ones. They need to go back and get bigger. I always use 6 lb. test leader or lighter. Had one on last summer that went to the middle and bottom of the river and ran upstream, took me clear to the backing of my fly line and was still going. I couldn't stop it. Finally my 12 lb leader broke. Never did see the bugger except when it too the fly. Had to have been a big brown.

Okay, so I guess I got a wee bit excited about this subject. Could run off at the keyboard all day on this one. Glad to see there are two me out there who like to fish as well as I do. tongue.gif

Richard, you should try "my" river......Maisky likes it here.

I am definitly one for the Catch and eat program.

I have fished for Catfish, Northern, Lake Trout, Baracudda, Yellow Tail,Albacore, Perch, White Bass, Walleye, Blue Gills, Large Mouth, Small mouth and Silver Bass and Sunnys.

I have never Fly fished but I have used multiple types of lures and I think that what I like best is to troll with spinners for Northern, Lake Trout and Walleye. Although Blue Gill through the ice with a grub on a hook can be fun.

I find that Icefishing is fun if you use enough antifreeze while you are fishing. goof.gif

I love to go Surf Fishing off the Outer Banks of N.C. No luck this year, though! sad.gif

I always try and spend some time on the Chesapeke as well. Wish I could find more time to fish!

The River that I love to fish here in Ohio is the Mad River. We have Browns and Rainbows but I have been told that there are some Cuts and some Brookies. I did catch one that looked like a Brookie from some of the pictures I have seen but not really sure, it did go 9 1/2' and was fun indeed to catch.

Most of the flies that I use range from 18's to 14's. I usually keep a supply of both natural and beadheads and they are:
Gold Ribbed Hare's Ear
Prince
Hendrickson
Elkhair Caddis
March Brown

My Streamers are only a couple:
Wooly Bugger, either in Black or Olive or a combination.
Golden Darter, My own Pattern
Silver Darter, My own Pattern

We do have a good range of Blue-Winged Olives and Tricos

The River here is mostly like fishing a large creek or stream and by no means like a river at all where most of it's widest parts is 20 feet across with high banks and a lot of overhanging trees and shrubs. A deep hole is about 4 to 5 feet deep. But int the 27 years that I have been fishing there, the river has only frozed across twice and both times was when we had several days of sub -20 degrees F. Other than that I fish the river year round.

My tippet material runs with a 5x or 6x.

I do LOVE the sport. biggrin.gif

Posted by: JaneyMae 22-Dec-2003, 03:28 PM
I recognized two of the flies you use: Elkhair Caddis and Wooly Bugger. I use mostly Jimmy's Hoppers, orange and yellow stimulaters, Trout flies, black moes, and redas* cadis. That's all I can think of at this point.

I'd love to fish other rivers but never get to any. I'm in Idaho on the South Fork of the Snake. This is one of the "One Fly" stops. The folks from Jackson, Wyoming are spending so much time here that, along with the guides, they are destroying the fishery. Sad. They are interested in the almighty dollar and not the river habitat.

Thats a deal. I don't get to fish nearly enough, and you can actually get some decent surf fishing in off the coast of New Jersey (the water conditions have improved dramaticaly over the past few years). My Godson is old enough now to enjoy fishing, so I am going to take him out this spring. His dad is one heck of a Bass angler!

Here you can go fishing quite well as far as I am concerned (he's fishing, I'll go walking or swimming somewhere further away).. when my brother was over (also a passionate angler) we went to Lochore Meadows and caught some brown trouts...well they did, me and my brothers GF went walking around it.

I would love to join you! Want to go deep sea fishing as well. I hate worms so when I worm fish I've learned to bait my hook without ever touching the icky things. Other than that it doesn't bother me. Taking a youngster fishing is great fun! They get so excited when they get to real one in.

My husband is an avid fisherman. I am not that great myself. I will cast out a few times (after I make him bait my hook) and then lose interest in it. I usually end up reading a book. The last time we went we had to leave. We saw about 12 water moccasins and copperhaeds swimming around in the pond and some were trying to go up on the bank where we were, so we got the heck out. I had no desire to get bit because I disturbed a snake when it was taking a nap.

What surprised me was how many snakes we saw. There were a ton of turtles too, and you would think they would keep the snake population down.

This stems from a story when I was at work talking to one of the young guys during our lunch period.

One day we were talking about fishing and this young kid piped up and said that he had a cooler full of night crawlers at home. Since he had told me that he had taken Ranger training for the Army how he could eat anything, I thought that this was my chance.

I asked him what he did with the night crawlers and he told me that he used them for fishing. I asked him why he was using food for catching fish. He asked me what I did with them and I told him that I ate them and how they were good for you. I could see the cringe in his face and I knew I had him.

He asked how I ate them and I told him that one good way was to deep fry them. I told him to first prepare them by taking a fillet knife and slit them long ways and then place them under running water and rinse out the dirt and entrals. Then roll them in a Beer Batter and drop them into a deep frier and wait until they were a golden brown. I could see him even more. But then I told him that the best way for you was to eat them while they were still fresh out of the ground. At this point I could see him shudder.

That night after work I went to the store here in town and picked out the reddist gummy worm I could find. (This was when gummy worms just came out on the market). I went home a put it in my lunch box for the next day.

When I came to break time the next day, he was already outside eating and I palmed the gummy worm in my hand and walked outside in the grass and said out loud that I found a worm. He turned to look at me and I dropped it im my mouth and started chewing. He then jumped up and ran to the parking lot and lost what he had in his stomache.

From that point on, he never said a word about how he could eat anything again.

Was that Ornery of me or what. rolleyes.gif

Another nice thing about winter fishing is that most of the Anglers are home all nice warm and cozy thinking about fishing while I am out there catching them.

I asked myself one day while watching a fishing show, why sit here and watch while I could be out there catching them. I fell in love with it and don't want to go back to just watching it.

The best time is right after a heavy snow when all is quiet. And knowing you are there all by yourself. The whole River to yourself. biggrin.gif It puts a smile on my face every time.

And more long underwear. biggrin.gif

The first thing you need to know, is to tell if the Ice is any good or not.

If the Ice looks white DO NOT GO OUT ON IT. This is a soft Ice and you can easily fall through.

If the Ice looks black you are safe as long as the Ice is thick enough.

The rule on Ice goes as follows.
2" is safe for a man walking
3" is safe for a man on a horse
4" is safe for an automobile
6" is safe for a train.

I never go out until it is at least 4" I know I will be safe then.

A good snow mobile suit with a hood helps with a GOOD pair of Pack boots.

These are the items that I take with me.

1. You need something to cut the Ice such as an Ice Auger.
2. Ice scoop for the broken ice in the hole
3. A bucket to sit on and carry my tackle and bait and to put the fish in when I go home.
4. Usually a short rod with light line but it depends on what you are fishing for.

As for being a beginner. Do not go out by yourself. Always be smart and keep aware of what is going on around you. Stay away from any place that has running water near or below and stay away from any springs.

First of all BE SAFE!

Okay, So I need to buy more long underwear..........

We don't have ice on the reservoir until January or February that is that thick. i'll aim for the 4" as suggested. Now I know what I can ask for Christmas.

Like you said, no bugs and better yet, no snakes biggrin.gif

Can hardly wait to give this a try! What kind of bait do you use?

Posted by: Richard Bercot 23-Dec-2003, 03:30 PM
Raven Wing,

I live in Western Ohio.

Janey Mae,

I really depend on what kind of fish you plan to fish for.

For Sunfish such as Bluegills, Red Ears, Green Sunfish. I would suggest such thing as Wax Worms, Meal Worm, Mousies and Spikes. All of there are maggot type baits.

For Crappies, Walleyes, Saugers, Saugeyes, Pikes. I would suggest minnow type baits.

Janey Mae,

I have never fished for those either, mainly because we do not have them here. With the exception of the Rainbows but I fish them in the River here and not through the ice. I use nymphs and streamers for those here.

But from some of the TV programs that I have watched, you might want to fish with a spoon or a jig tipped with a minnow along the drop offs. Your best bet is to fish about a foot or two off the bottom.

But it would be better if someone who has more knowledge on this to answer you.

You might go to the Library and see if they have any thing to offer you or you might check your Internet.

By the way, I never wish anyone Good Luck but I do wish them Merriment. It is no good fishing if you are not having fun. Right? wink.gif

Yes, fishing isn't fishing if it isn't fun smile.gif hmmmmm there's another gray moment.

I can hardly wait to try this! I'll look up some of the techniques for my area. After the first of the year we can fish the river again. It's usually closed from Dec. to June but we are supposed to thin out the rainbows and the hybrids so the cut throat can survive. The river never freezes.

I owe you a debt of gratitude for your assistance. beer_mug.gif

My father was an avid fly fisherman... around Argyll, Inverness and Perthshire - with the odd sorty into Borders territory and further north into Caithness... When we were children it was a loooooooooong day to go in a boat onto the loch and sit, and sit, and sit... He was a fanatical fisherman - tied his own flies etc.

Then I met the love of my life. My Dad converted him from sea angling and what we call 'coarse' fishing to fly fishing... His life was changed. He became as much a fanatic as Dad....

Soooooo, now we compromise. 'We' go fishing; ie he wades into the water or sits in a boat... I sit on the loch-side or river bank and read a book...... I then cook the results of his 'fishing trip'....

He fishes for brown trout, salmon, rainbow trout. He still loves to go sea angling too.... cod etc.

He loves to fish, I love to cook........ a marriage made in heaven. rolleyes.gif

Catriona,

If you plan to sit around reading while they are fishing, there is a good book I would suggest reading.

"The Compleat Angler" by Izzak Walton.

It was published in 1653, a good story of Angling but there is much more to it than that. There is a good story line along with some poetry. I think that you would enjoy it. I most certainly did and I am getting ready to read it again. thumbs_up.gif

As a matter of fact I enjoyed the book so much the first time I read it, I bought a copy of it. It was a used copy printed in 1912 I found on ebay.

For the serious Trout Fisherman, I again recommend "The Compleat Angler" here too. As for that anyone, I think would enjoy it.

Back to the Trout Fisherman, another book I would recommend is "Trout" by Ray Bergman. A very good book for techniques on Fly Fishing in a River or Lake, along with recipes for tying flies, tying a variety of knots, along with some stories of fishing memories.

If you are looking just for reading material dealing with the Fly Fishing line, is "Death, Taxes and Leaky Waders" by John Gierach. This is more of just for fun reading.

My father's copy is on my bookshelves cool.gif Husband bought his own before we were bequeathed Dad's books - so we have two copies now.

The restaurant/Hotel the Compleat Angler at Marlow in Buckinghamshire is an amazing place on the River Thames. I recall that it dates back to the mid 1600s. Here's a URL for one of the sites which advertise the place, and a few more along the River Thames

A nice lawn chair and plenty of snacks and antifreeze is good too!!!!
Don't forget your sunglasses. Ice fishing gives new meaning to "BRIGHT"! biggrin.gif

Janey Mae,

While your husband is on the computer playing poker, maybe this will give you the time you need to do some of your reading and tying flies.

I have been having the same problem tying my flies, I use to tie everday, at least one or two a day. But since I found this site, it has consumed a great deal of my time. Now since we have this thread going, I am starting to get itchy fingers to get started again and to get myself back out on the river again.

Posted by: JaneyMae 24-Dec-2003, 11:06 AM
The ol' boy is trying to push me off the puter as we speak. *sigh* I'd love to see some of your flies. I've not tied any in a great while. You are right, this would be a good time to start.

Well, I'm off to drive back to my house with many many family obligations. I'll be back on the 26th. Merry Christmas, Happy Channukkah, Happy Solstice, and anything else you can think of.

Take care of you! biggrin.gif newyear.gif

The only Ice Fishing story I can contribute took place in upstate Pennsylvania about 2 years ago. All my trout fishing buddies and myself rented a cabin on a lake for a weekend. As we unloaded our vehicles, I realized the fishing was not a priority. There was one tackle box, and like 5 cases of beer. Still, I was excited about the prospect of catching fish. That was dashed completely when they used a chainsaw to cut the holes in the ice. All we caught was a cold, but we had quite a good time not catching fish, although I don't remember that much of it! wink.gif

Along with my Fly Fishing, I love my Long Pole Fishing which I have 2 rods for. One of them is a 10 footer and the other is a 16 footer. Just the Rod, Line and myself, no reel at all.

Even though it is a little rough fishing a stream with a lot of brush and cover, there is nothing like the excitement of hooking a large fish on it, as a matter of fact, a one pound fish feels like you are trying to pull up the bottom of the stream.

I do use jigs, or live bait with these with a float (bobber). This technique would take you back to your childhood days. All I started with was a stick, line, hook and bobber.

Lots of fun!!!

The only times I use a fly rod and reel is when I am fishing a stream that is heavily overgrown with brush and willows. The long rod allows you to work the bait or lure right under the willows, where the big fishies live! biggrin.gif

Those Dupont lures don't work well when on the ice, they have a tendency to get your feet wet and more. They are effective though.

I flyfish for trout and release all that I catch. I use a spinning rod for walleye, crappie, and perch and eat all that I can catch sometimes using lures, and sometimes with bait or combinations of both. I like to flyfish with popping bugs for blue gills and bass and keep some and release most.

A nice eclectic collection of fish in your diet. I agree with keeping only to eat. Only someone from the Rockies would recognize the Dupont lure reference. You are right, floating fish would be hard to pick up from under the ice. biggrin.gif

When I do decide to keep any fish, it is enough for one meal. I do not any more than that because, once that one is eaten, I could go out to catch another. But over all I would say that I return 99% of all the fish I catch.

I take a camera with me now so that if I catch a real nice one, I can take a picture of it and mount the picture. I did have one fish mounted and it was a 6 1/2 Largemouth that I caught up in Michigan back in "75 aand decided that it was enough for me.

Posted by: JaneyMae 28-Dec-2003, 07:50 PM
That's how I fish. Try not to keep them unless one is a meal and that's only once in a while. I like to take pics of the big ones but I have so many pics now ...... well, anyway. I just love to fish lol.gif

Posted by: Richard Bercot 29-Dec-2003, 07:17 AM
I said I take my camera along. But in the last two years I have only taken one picture. And the only reason I had that picture taken was because I had my son with me who reminded me to take it.

Most of my pictures are in my head. I am so excited after catching one, I don't even think about the camera until I release the fish. Oh well, at least I know I am having fun. tongue.gif

Right now I am reading two fishing books along with my "Return of the King". They are:
"Quill Gordon" by John McDonald - this is a book on the History of Fly Fishing.
and
"A treatyse of fysshynge wyth an Angle" by Dame Juliana Berners edited by Wynken de Worde in 1496. This is very slow and difficult reading, but I love the challenge of it as you can tell by just the title of the book. There are some words in it that takes a couple of minutes to try to figure out what they are. unsure.gif

I now have my Fly tying bench beside my computer as a constant reminder to start tying again and I think I will start up again today. thumbs_up.gif

You should skin a Catfish, at least I always did and I also fillet them and remove any of the brown or yellow meat.

Most of the time those catfish never wants to give up their skin, but I can't blame them there either. Then you still need to gut and gill them.

No, I used a couple I purchased. I have used flys, both wet and dry far more than jigs. I use a spinning rig with a bobber with flys. Mostly I use lures or bait (worm).
Only used Dupont lure once. Dad got upset with me. angel_not.gif

Does anyone keep a journal for their fishing accounts?

I record the day I went out, where I went, what I was using and what I caught.

I really haven't started with the air and water termperatures but I do log down if there is a hatch on. wink.gif

Depending on the amount of "antifreeze"involved, I have trouble REMEMBERING the day, let alone remembering well enough to log all those details.

I do, however have a good memory of certain significant days fishing. Like the first time at JaneyMae's place.

Scene: 4:30 am. Dark, raining, windy, temp about 40 deg F. Standing not far from my oldest daughter while we played with the big fishies. We were wet and freezing cold, but didn't even feel it.

thumbup.gif Maisky, I remember that! I was warm in my bed and the fish your daughter brought to the house were beautiful! Glad we finally convinced her that catch and release is good. lol.gif That was such a fun time!

I've never used a journal. Thought about it but then couldn't remember the thought. We've spent so many years on this river that we basically know what to use by the time of day. Thursday is the best day to fish in the summer because the river has been quieter during the week and the fish have recuperated from the last weekend and the weekenders haven't arrived. We work on the cabin and then fish and work and fish. Sometimes we just hang out on the deck tho.

Remembering the Nixon tapes, I long ago decided that the fewer records we keep, the less likely one of them will come back and bite us in the butt. biggrin.gif

I keep a few fishy pictures, but that is all. Why leave a record that helps some other fisherman catch the big ones.......

My main reason I keep a record, which usually does not consists of much, is for me and not other fisherman.

Sometimes I use it as a reminder for which month certain hatches occur and some notes on locations.

My best fishing experience was two days standing in the Current River in Missouri with three friends. In those two days we caught 60 fish, but not one was legal to keep. We had a great time and no fish to clean. The Coke and Dr.Pepper was a flowing like our stories, as we fished, laughed, cajolled, cussed, and discussed.

Although it doesnt seem much of a fishing story, it was the fishing which brought us together closer

Knightly Knight,

I am a firm believer of Fishing for the Fun of it. There was no stress on you and you are out there and enjoying nature and catching fish.

What more could you ask. thumbs_up.gif

Fishing and CATCHING fish are different goals. The act of fishing is a wonderful balm for the spirit. It is wonderful to comune with nature and lose yourself to the moment. Catching fish is not the top priority. thumbs_up.gif

Richard Bercot. Absolutely about having a big smile telling that story. We acted like we were bummed out about not "catching" any fish, but really we didnt care. We had planned that trip for 3 months.

Maisky I tend to agree. a bad day fishing is better than a lot of things. My family has a lot of philisophical fisherman. And bad spellers LOL I guess id change my tune if I had to fish for a living or for my supper.

Fishing here is pretty tough right now since it is blown out with all the rain we have been receiving. It is up and over the banks for people who do not know what blown out is.

Sorry you had to miss opening day Janey but something tell me that you will soon be out there.

I have been tying flies lately and recently found an OLD Fly that I am eyeballing right now, "Fiery Brown" but I need to pick up some materials this weekend. I found a picture of it on the Internet and saved it as my wallpaper as a constant reminder. Just looking at this Fly makes me drull drool.gif even though it is a Salmon Fly, it still looks HOT. I will try to see if I can't post a picture of it in here. First of all I have to find it again. lookaround.gif

For me the whole point of fishing is being out on the water in the fresh air without tv or radio and not a lot of conversation. There is usually a bald eagle or two and life is grand. Catching a fish is just a bonus..... wink.gif

Janey we do need to get Maisky, yes you can steer when you are on ski's. He probably never showed you how to make turns so you'd hit all the tree's. Sounds like a brother of mine. Then when I run into something, he'd laugh.
It would make me so mad as a kid, I'd take off and beat on him. Usually he'd lay there laughing....sibling rivalry.

There's been a lot of jokes told about New Jersey being a dump but there are some very nice places in the northwest section to fish and I have proof. I caught this smallmouth bass on the last cast of the day, Good Friday, to be exact.

It measured in at 22 1/2 inches. Unfortunately, we didn't have any way of weighing it. We were guessing close to 6 lbs.

Biggest freshwater fish I ever caught.

Ah, there you are Maisky, your supposed to be aboard the Lustful Wanderer I see you have erected a sound defensive position made from empty bottles of Tullamore Dew. Methinks that if we refrain from words like 'wenches' and 'shanghieing' the missle fire from the other end of the bar will cease.

This should be a fun trip! I will have more "supplies" sent to the dock. I hope to get this trip on the road, so to speak. I finished my current project today and have at least 2 weeks before I have to work again. So, it is either off to Ireland or up to JaneyMae's place to harrass the trout. Wrong time of year, but what the heck!! There is NO bad time for fishing. biggrin.gif

Maisky!!! Come on ahead *she yells to Annabelle to get the LARGE pot ready to put on the fire* Would love to have you up here!

There's an eagle in the tree right now. Its parents are trying to teach it to fish. The dear have made a nice trail down by the river....you just have to get down the hill. It's only zero outside right now so bring warm clothes. Keep me posted! Hey, who else is coming here? We could have a party. music.gif jerry.gif

I will find out on Monday if it is feasible to take the time. My owner is having eye surgery on the 20th, but bravely (only a hint of tears) said it would be ok if I went. If I can be working, I need to do so. If the projects my current client has on the table are not of interest or don't pay enough, I need to be here beating the bushes for a new cash cow, errr, CLIENT. biggrin.gif

If I had the phone # for your Castle (cabin), I might call you on the weekends. I don't pay for long distance on the weekend. It is unlimited with my cell phone charge. We definitely need to set up something. This is doable. The trips into the Wyoming wilderness (from California) I used to make were no more elaborate than going to Alaska.

The summer trips to Wyo used to entail a number of people meeting in Rock Springs, WY and driving to an outfitter's. The horsies would carry the beer, food, cast iron, etc to a little lake about 10 miles into the wilderness area. We would then walk in, carrying only our clothing. 10 days later the horsies would come back and haul out the trash and equipment. The fishing, scenery and fun were world class.

After walking out, we would drive back to Rock Springs and all decend on a restaurant. The tourists were all open mouthed at 8-10 really dirty, rangy looking (but smelling only of wood smoke) people with knives and an occasional gun on their hips eating and tipping beer. The locals were used to the phenomenon.

Posted by: JaneyMae 15-Jan-2004, 12:04 PM
That time had to be so wonderful! I've seen some of the pics of your trips there. Phenomenal!

We used to camp in the high mountains and would go to town for supplies, making a stop at the local pub. Always fun to watch the faces of the other patrons lol.gif

This particular Fly is a Salmon Fly called a Fiery Brown. I found this on the following website. I intent to tie it as a Streamer with a #8 - 4X Down-eye Streamer Hook, round bend. And substitute the fiery brown seal with a Hares Ear Antron Dubbing.

http://www.flyanglersonline.com/features/oldflies/part184.html

Fiery Brown
Compiled by Deanna Lee Birkholm

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The origin of this fly is unknown. A. Courtney Williams suggest that it could be the same as Cotton's "Bright Brown." One of the greatest tales about a fly was told about the Fiery Brown in 1845. The tale is found in Mary Marbury's Favorite Flies, page 115, and mentioned in John McDonald's Complete Fly Fisherman, The Notes and Letters of Theodore Gordon page 221. Michael Rogan, 1822-1905, of Ballyshannon, County Donegal, Ireland is credited with producing a Fiery Brown with a new and more brilliant dressing. [Shown here.]

Fiery Brown
As dressed by Charlie DeFeo

Tag: Four turns round gold tinsel and gold floss.

Tail: Golden pheasant crest.

Body: Fiery brown seal.

Rib: Fine oval gold tinsel and rust colored hackle.

Throat: Rust colored hackle.

Wing: Bronze mallard.

Here's how I do my fishing:

1. I pick up the phone.
2. I dial the number for the local fishmarket.
3. I give them my order: 6 pieces of Alaskan whitefish, an order of onion rings and an order of fried zucchini.
4. I get in my car and drive to the aforementioned business.
5. I go to the counter and get the order form with my name on it.
6. I take the order form over to the cashier and pay for it.
7. I wait while they fry my order up for me.
8. When they call my number, I pick up the order.
9. I get in my car and head to Wendy's.
10. I go through the drive-thru at Wendy's get an order of Biggie-size fries.
11. I head home, put the food on the table, say grace, and eat.

Pretty complicated, huh biggrin.gif ?

Yea, too complicated for me.

First of all, are you sure that it is Alaskan Whitefish you are getting? unsure.gif

For me it is not worth the risk as for I have a deadly allergy to any kind of Sea Food. So the only fish that I eat is the fish that I catch.

And not near as much fun either. wink.gif

I am also going to tie this same fly using alternative colors such as:

Cream body with Olive Palmer Hackle and Woodduck breast for the wings with a black tail and gold tinsel.

White body with Dun Palmer Hackle with Mallard breast for the wings with a dun tail and silver tinsel.

Black body with Black Palmer Hackle with Dyed black Mallard breast for the wings with a black tail and black wire.

These are just a few alternatives I pland to use.

I like my 4 Basic colors; white, yellow, red and black. Some shade may vary from the fore mentioned colors but the basics will be the same.

I may finally get the chance to tie the Fly I have been using as my Avatar this weekend. I am suppose to going to Dayton to the my Fly Fishing Shop to pick up the materials that I need to tie it.

Wish me Luck. wink.gif

sad.gif As you can tell by my sadden face that I was not able to get to Dayton today.

Ms. Grebe is still down and she needs more part to get her back on the road. So there goes my Fly Tying money.

I guess I will have to wait for another 2 weeks when I go to Columbus when I go to the Hospital for more tests. sad.gif

However, they do have a nice Fly Fishing Shop call Mad River Outfitters with plenty of Fly Tying Materials. biggrin.gif

And pray, Sir Richard, why are you going to the hospital for more tests? What tests?

clap.gif I was finally successful in tying a Winged Streamer. I was a Platte River Special. This was the first time that I was sucessful at tying the wings so that they are in a straight line. tongue.gif

I tried looking for a picture of it. But all I could find was a site for it on Fly Fish TV at www.flyfishtv.com. The only modification I made to it was a brass cone head. tongue.gif

I have been working on some "Bead Head Wooly Buggers" in the 8 - 12 4X Streamer Hook range. The colors that I am tying are Black, Olive, Brown and a variety of all of the above.

I have heard that any color will work good as long as it is Black. wink.gif

My Recipe is:

Hook: 8 - 12 (4X Streamer)

Head: Brass or Tungsten Bead

Thread: To match body

Body: Black, Olive, Brown wools

Tail: Marabou to match body

Ribbing: Palmer Hackle to match body

Posted by: Richard Bercot 08-Feb-2004, 09:59 PM
That is so easy.

The Fly Rod is a Hardy Ultralite Fly Rod with a Reversed Half Wells handle.

The Fly Reel is a Hardy Wide Spool Perfect Reel.

As far as the which Fly is rather hard to tell since the fly is not visible in the picture.

How was that? tongue.gif

Here is a new fishing story from CNN: The one that DIDN'T get away:

Luke Tresoglavic swam 300 meters (1,000 feet) to shore, walked to his car and drove to the local surf club with the 60 centimeter (23 inches) shark biting his leg and refusing to let go.

"I just realized I had to swim in like that, hanging on to it," Tresoglavic told Australian Broadcasting Corp. radio on Wednesday.

Tresoglavic, 22, was snorkeling on a reef off Caves Beach near Newcastle on Tuesday when a wobbegong, or carpet shark, attacked his leg.

"Once I got on to shore, a couple of people tried to help me, but I could not remove it. It was stuck there, so I got up into my car and then drove to the clubhouse, and luckily the guys down there had a clue what to do."

A senior lifeguard at the clubhouse, Michael Jones, said he couldn't believe his eyes when Tresoglavic turned up -- shark in tow.

"He basically asked the question: 'Can you help me get it off?' There's nothing in our procedure manual for that type of thing," Jones said.

The lifeguards flushed the shark's gills with fresh water, forcing it to loosen its grip on Tresoglavic's leg -- with blood oozing from 70 needle-like punctures. The shark later died.

"He's lucky he didn't get into difficulties in the water trying to swim with that thing thrashing around," Jones said.

But he said Tresoglavic remained in good spirits throughout the ordeal. "There was a side of humor to it," he said.

Tresoglavic was taken to hospital, but it was not immediately clear what treatment he received.

Wobbegong sharks can grow up to 3 meters (9.84 feet) in length, possess razor-sharp teeth, and are said to be moody and short-tempered.

Not always. sad.gif Twenty-five years ago I bought a pair of Redball Chest Waders, the Top of the line. I gave $ 120.00 for them and they only lasted 2 weeks and I had not snagged them. I did get my money back and bought a pair of Pro-Line and only gave $ 69.00 for them, they lasted me 2 years.

Well by me being a Diabetic, I cannot have my feet exposed to water for an extended period of time. sad.gif

After doing some research on Fly Lines, I have cut the field down to these 4:

1. Orvis Wonderline Advantage $ 59.00

3. Cortland 444 $ 59.00 (444 LAZERLINE, 444 Double Taper )
***I changed my mind on the 555*

5. AirFlo Platinum Series $ 56.95 (River & Stream)

7. Rio Products $ 54.00 (Selective Trout? Fly Line)

So far, it is looking like it is going to be between the Orvis Wonderline Advantage and the AirFlo Platinum Series.

I am still researching and looking for input on this.

Fishing Conditions are:

1. Small Stream and shallow with several runs and riffles.
2. Heavy Brush and Trees.
3. High Banks on both sides.

If I go fly fishing and I'll try it when I come up, how can I lay back if I'm not in a boat and take a nap?
You have to stand up the whole time. There is no naping out there. Don't like that part. If you are in a boat you can lay down and snooze. Little Makers Mark, snooze again. What is the sport again?

There is always time to take a nap. When you disturb a spot, you just sit down on the bank and rest from a half and hour to an hour to let the waters settle down.

Oh Goodie, that can be my nap time. Fish for 15 minutes. Then a snack of Makers Mark. 15 minutes of singing to the fish, then nap time again, right?

I would recommend the wonderline (best name) with a 6# leader and your new fly with the H.E. filled brass warhead. No fish will EVER get away! biggrin.gif
